Japan folk tales are weird. Like the one about the Shirime. The story of which goes like this: Long ago, a samurai was walking at night down the road to Kyoto when he heard someone calling out for him to wait. "Who's there?!" he asked nervously, only to turn around and find a man stripping off his clothes and pointing his bare buttocks at the flabbergasted traveler. A huge glittering eye then opened up where the strange man's anus should have been. And that's it. The story ends there, it doesn't say anything else like if the Shirime kills the samurai, or if the samurai kills the Shirime, or if he runs away screaming, or anything. Just that, the samurai walks, finds a weird dude, he strips, bends over, and butt eye shows up.

It's interesting because the birth of Momotaro is similar to the birth of a boy in a Chinese myth, Ne Zha. Li Jing, waits the birth of his third child. His wife’s pregnancy had lasted three years and six months. The night before going into labor, his wife, Lady Yin, dreamt she saw a Daoist immortal sweeping his magical whisk across her belly. (Weird) He asked her to accept the child being and to call him “Ne Zha.” The next day, Lady Yin gave birth to a meatball. Her husband suspected the anomaly to be demonic and drew his sword. He proceeded to strike the fleshy mass, piecing the surface and revealing Ne Zha.

I love Japanese folk stories. There was one that I loved when I went to Japan. I was looking around Shinto shrines in Nagoya and found one that was covered in rabbits and arrows with an archery range. I asked the shrine attendants about it and they said that the Kami of the shrine was a local rabbit god who was a bit of a local hero. The story was that there was a Samurai who was a bad man. He was mean to all of the citizens and was an all round bad guy. He was also a Master Archer and was filled with hubris over his skills with the bow. So to save the people form the tyranny, the gods sent a humble rabbit to the people who challenged the Samurai to contest of skill with the bow. The contest lasted a few days but the Rabbit had a magical bow blessed by the gods so that it could not miss and won the contest. The Samurai was shamed by the defeat and killed himself and the rabbit was praised as a hero and the shrine made for him to honour him.

I like that this myth gives context to my favorite manga One Piece- one character in the wano arc has a fruit power, that lets her make kiridango- and any animals she feeds them too are tamed and obedient to her. Of course later it turns out it works on the zoan knockoffs that the local big bad has working for him- so a huge swath of the enemy crew defects eventually- I wonder if it works on regular zoan fruit users, because the idea of Kaido, being tamed and obedient to this little girl is very jarring.
@lucystarlight88873 жыл бұрын
In One Piece, all of the Admirals' code names reference the story of Momotaro, which I think is cool. Akainu means "Red Dog," Kizaru means "Yellow Monkey," and Aokiji means "Blue Pheasant." This connection is strengthened as Akainu has an attack where he makes a big dog out of lava, and Aokiji has an attack where he makes a big bird out of ice. There's a couple characters who might be based off of Momotaro, like Momonosuke and Sentomaru, who both look like peaches (One Piece character designs are weird). Also, the character Otama has the awesome magic power to make kibi dango, which she can feed to animals to make them her friends.

Actually, children appearing from unlikely sources are pretty wide-spread throughout folklore. There's the whole trope of a couple wishing for children, and after they do something of a ritual nature (like praying or making a doll out of wood or bread or something) they either have a magic child or receive a gift that provides them with a child or their doll comes to life (kinda like Pinocchio-skip-to-the-end). In several folk stories such children are tiny but capable of unusual deeds. In others they grow up to be great warrior heroes. It seems like this plot is related to the idea of godly conception, where a god or a spirit enters a woman's body via food, wood chips, footprints or various assorted objects.

I once saw "Hey! Spring of Trivia" feature an alternate version of Momotaro's birth: instead of finding a baby inside the giant peach, the old woman eats some of the peach and becomes young again, the old man does the same, and they do something that haven't had the urge to do for some time, leading to Momotaro being born in the usual way.

fun fact: Fujiko F. Fujio (the creator of Doraemon) made a Momotaro-themed comic where the ogre in the island IS actually a white person. Not sure about his country of origin but in the story he's a sailor stuck in an island. The Japanese people who see him get scared of him because he's very tall, has very diff features (reddish skin, light hair, a bigger nose), and can't speak the language so he just yells a lot for help. In the story the misunderstanding got solved and he returns to his homeland. I sometimes wonder if this work is particular is trying to paint a more sympathetic light to the assigned "US as an ogre" in the Momotaro popularity since Fujiko F. Fujio in general is pretty anti-war in a lot of his other works

The Blue Knight 590 i mean hell more then half of all military films have freindship and camaraderie, the "band of brothers": and yet thats okay and yet when anime does it "its cliche". Do people just want to laud and follow the ideals of "being a dick and apathetic chode because fuck idealism and basic decency?"

Sketchbook Online as a Chinese who really likes Japan and really don't like atomic bombs, I'd say that they fucked themselves up when they started the war... if not for the two atomic bomb we along with dozens of other Asian countries would have been finished.
@NotAFakeName17 жыл бұрын
Guciom I don't think that's how they see it. They aren't burning with resentment over ww2, they just view the atom bombs as a horrible tragedy that should never happen again.
@barsni47797 жыл бұрын
First - educaton reforms are capable of making people believe anything. That holocost did not happened, that A-bombs were dropped by russians and such. Second, @WeiYinChan It's not like they just decided to start a war - it had complicated reasons and prerequisites. Third, nah, Japan pretty much was doomed since the point they did not won in midway. Remember, they did not have resourses for prolonged war. They wouldn't even be capable to control continental territories for long since you need constant military presence capable of controlling them - and that is also draining. Even if USSR wasn't called to clean the house. Well, they might have, if they managed to seal good peace treaty from US.
@WeiYinChan7 жыл бұрын
B'ars NI yes there were complicated reasons but it doesn't change the fact that they started the war by starting to attack countries around them, raping and killing countless civilians in multiple Asian countries. They started it mostly due to militarisation and imperialism they learnt from the west combined with their original bushido values and a failing economy and growing population. But the moment they started the war they really can't complain about taking damages because of the war. I sympathise with them on the atomic bomb tragedies but they reap what they sow and what happened in Nagasaki and Hiroshima is nothing compared to the damaged they did to all the Asian countries they invaded purely because of greed. As a Chinese the atomic bombs may as well had been why I exist at all.
