But because she and naoki are different he can't seem to relay what he really wanted to say or confess. That's why he tries to put it in words she would understand. The deceased author wrote that story from her pov, she always saw herself as Kotoko, she thought she wasn't bright or cute. Her husband worked as a consultant for the Japanese version and requested them to make Naoki more flawed, weak and imperfect, since he was never the perfect guy his wife saw him as whilst he told them to make Kotoko prettier, smarter and kinder bc that's how he saw her. Kotoko was the best for him. After her passing he gave up on being a musician, Still introduces himself as her husband (he never dated again).

One of the reasons he decided to be the producer/consultant of the JP drama was because of the credit roll showing his wife and his name together once again as he said, "after all these 20+ years, I still wish my name can be next to you. i did realize after watching this drama for many times, irie surely loves kotoko. he always show that in minim gestures that kotoko didn't realized, and since the whole drama using kotoko pov we can barely know his feeling towards her unless you pay attention to him more closely. since the first episode irie seems to notice to every little details about her like if there's a piece of bread on her, and find a way to touch her. he always make a first move when it comes to physical things. he loves her to the point he wanted her to grow to the better version of herself, like when she wants to copied his homework he didn't let her instead he helps her done it. he seems enjoy to be with her. he also tells her almost everything in his mind, that no one else know but her. he absolutely not falling in love with her at first, but step by step, slowly he fell in love. i like it how much his character development goes, it feels natural and more romantic, because i myself believe if i were in naoki position i would act in same way, i mean like they were stranger back then and kotoko make a brutal move, then i will feel scared or annoyed. but then you can see naoki really enjoys to make fun of her, the indication of his interest towards her, and also he always pay attention to whatever she says

I don’t think the main point is Kotoko finding love. I think the story is a cold and introverted guy whose life gets disrupted and for the first time starts to have emotion and feelings he never actually had, like anger, jealousy, etc. He always the best at everything and never had any real challenges.

From what he said at 36:46, i think the reason why he accepted Matsumoto's offer because he thought Kotoko was dating with Sudo-san. He seemed happy when he said that he realized that it wasn't true. When he said that he knew she was following him all a long, i think it's obvious that all he did to Matsumoto on a date was just to tease Kotoko and Sudo-san. When Kotoko apologised to him for ruining his date because she thought he was in love with Matsumoto, he interupted and asked her if she wanted to go somewhere (at 37:25). From his reaction, i think he wanted to show her that she's the person that he loved. He even said that he decided to face her, it means that he stopped denying his feeling for her and started to accept it.

According to the science, when you fall in love with someone, they take many portions of your brain's space, so it makes your brain works slower than usual. It goes same for him. Kotoko was going to forget him after all and at that moment, she was also close with Sudo-san to the point that they could be mistaken as a couple (at least for Naoki). Since he believed in what he sees rather than what he hears, but the situation was kinda match the rumour (eventho it was obvious that the rumour was false), so yeah, it was understanable though.

This is the episode that Naoki literally is asking Kotoko to date him, but Kotoko didn’t recognize that he did so. He basically confessed his love for her and told her that she is a miraculous, unprecedented, singular experience that God bestows upon him. Kotoko recognized that he is saying this at first, but she immediately jumped to he is proposing to her 😂 And Naoki is obviously frustrated that her mind jumps so fast. When rebuffed of her thought Naoki is proposing to her, Kotoko immediately falls back to that there is no progress in their relationship and only dares to ask whether he dislikes her. She totally didn’t see Naoki is saying he wants to date her. And we see that Naoki is again frustrated, because he doesn’t understand how Kotoko can be so bad at listening and reading comprehension and so polarized in her thought that either it’s marriage or nothing. He wanted to explain but then he gives up because he thinks they are only freshman/sophomore in college and still have a lot of time together to figure it out and he can try to ask her to date him another time. But we can see that Naoki literally considers Kotoko to be his girlfriend after this episode. This is the classic textbook example of a smart guy confessing his love to a dumb girl in a poetic, subtle way that requires wit and good comprehension skill to understand, and he fails miserably because the message isn’t received 😂😂😂

Everyone is all about Irie and Kotoko but I’m over here having so much respect for Irie’s Papa. Not only is he a successful business man, he’s also a caring husband and a loving Dad. On daily basis, Irie’s Mom appears to be the one who gets the control or makes decisions and his Papa is just easy-going. But when in serious matters, he respects others’ opinions yet still keeps his assertiveness. 47:11 really shows this man has the strongest voice in the house and everyone’s respect. Now that’s a real husband material.

As for playing with her feelings I disagree, she obsessively stalked him and forced her love on him till he felt the same. He needed time to figure things out and was set on being with her until the fight with his dad. That's what I realised by rewatching. Don't think that means she has no selfrespect and dignity. It's her way of love, they're both individual extremes and that's why they're perfect for each other. I think her love is admirable. Imagine fighting this hard and then winning.

Naoki never has the initiative to take Kotoko on a date. She is always the one who takes the initiative, and sadly something always happens. On the one hand it's quite funny but on the other hand it shows a lack of self-love on her part. Edit(09/05/2023) After watching it again, over and over, and reading the comments for this and the other episodes, I think I misjudged Naoki, looked at it from one point of view and hadn't seen it from his point of view. I put it in a pattern, and forgot that each person is different. As I don't personally know geniuses with an IQ of 200, with his past I ended up going by the common point of view.

I agree that Kotoko takes more initiative than Naoki, but it’s just untrue to say he never takes initiative. He literally just took her on a date in this episode and asked her to date him, but Kotoko didn’t recognize that.

@@anyili3196 I understand your point, but he only takes her on a "date" when she decides to leave and ends up having trouble with a stranger. And supposing nothing had happened and she had decided to leave, would he have taken her? I'm not saying he doesn't have feelings for her, but even later, in season two, it's always up to Kotoko to do something for the two of them. Even her birthday, she's the one who has to almost beg to go out with him.

@@Bettywitt I do agree. I think Naoki just doesn’t see the point of going on a date when they live together and spend all their time together anyway. But he does want to spend more time with Kotoko. That’s probably the main reason why he tried to make sure Kotoko doesn’t join the tennis club. And for a guy who doesn’t even understand what jealousy or anxiety is, I don’t really blame him.

He takes initiative to go and find her in the medical school for several times. He takes initiative to visit her mom’s grave and her maternal family. He takes the late bullet train to get back from Nagoya for her. He helped her tutor an unrelated girl. And he literally didn’t sleep much for a whole month and made a game with the lead character being her. And even in season 1, there are a lot of times Naoki basically sets up everything for her to come to him. And he tries to prevent her from joining the tennis club because he knows there’s really not much benefit for her and they could spend more time together at home if she doesn’t join. He also trains her on tennis so that they spend more time together and people stop looking down on her. He also tutored Kotoko for a whole year in high school. He helped her get into college. And he would stay up all night and do Kotoko’s homework once before Kotoko does it to make sure she actually learns. And in the comic, he tutored the entire F class and helped them to get into college for her sake.

In my childhood i shipped in the anime naoki x kotoko but somehow in the drama i ship naoki x matsumoto and kinosuke x kotoko. Kinosuke really loves kotoko.. he accepted the whole of her and he even fights to earn her love. I don't know why but naoki x matsumoto and kinosuke and kotoko in the drama is much suitable for me😂 eventhough i know who will end up with who

Imo. If Kotoko ends up with Kinnosuke, she will be very loved but very pampered. She will only remains the way she is (clumsy and airheaded) and follows the path she never dreamed of. Naoki's love might be cruel but he knows that even she is incapable of many things she can do it if she is determined. He often hurts her because he wants her disconnect from him (knowing how obsessed she is) and focus for her own good and improvement. Based on the character of Kotoko, does she needs a love that can only make her happy or the love that can help her grow.

Yang buat aku iri sama Kotoko itu, dia punya ayah yang bener² sayang, tulus, bahjan jadi cinta pertamanya Kotoko. Asli ayahnya itu dad and husband material banget. Ayahnya dengerin, dan dukung anaknya banget. Walau ada kalanya ayahnya juga minta untuk didengerin sama Kotoko. Ini yang buat mungkin Naoki nyaman cerita apapun ke Kotoko. Karena dia terbiasa ngungkapin pikiran apapun ke ayahnya. Demikian pun ayahnya. Ditambah, kotoko punya "sosok" ibu dari ibunya Naoki, dan ayah Naoki yg nganggap Kotoko kaya anak perempuannya juga. Jadi lengkap "cemara"nya Kotoko.
