@maneadavid I was fortunate enough to be part of the choir on this tour in Israel and I can confirm that YES, choir II is down in an adjoining cave. If you notice the cave off to Dr. Allred's left, that is where they were. The cave went down pretty far and it took a bit of effort to get in and out of but SO worth it for the sound. One of my favorite concerts that I have ever participated in.

I have heard many renditions of the Miserere, and this one is the best! I think that the effect created by having some of the singers off in a different location was very haunting and beautiful.

@clangdon1908 Thank you for your wonderful comment and for watching! The octet is in another cave to the right of and behind the choir, down and out sight from audience and Dr. Allred. He stopped conducting because they couldn't see him. They just tried to maintain the tempo set previously by the full ensemble. It created a very nice effect though they can't be seen in the video. :)

Mercy of God. "Myserere". How to measure or conceive it's size or power? It is beyond mankind understanding. It can be felt though. At holding grandchild's hand. When giving daugther's hand to grum. At the uneven gesture of covering a parent's face with mortuary drape. This music embllishes or eases transit over such.

Having conducted collegiate choral music for 32 years this performance is perhaps one of the most awe inspiring musical moments I have yet to experience on youtube. One thing that does concern me is this attitude among some choral musicians that we must deem one choir better then another. i.e. "BYU is in the past?" Come now they are both exceptional choral ensembles conducted by exceptional conductors.

This work was composed for two choirs to be sung in the Sistine Chapel. The history of the work is actually very interesting. The second choir is off camera. My favorite moment in this piece is the soaring high C by the boy soprano in the off camera choir. Unfortunately both instances of this beautiful moment are ruined in this video; once by loud noise noise and the second by a cough. Beautiful video though. Great singing, great surroundings, great conducting, and quality audio/video. Kudos!

Beautiful! Just one nitpick concerning the verse "et secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum" and others like it. That is Gregorian Psalm mode II. The conclusions shouldn't be extended like that and the verses should be sung like speech-song since that's what it is. This piece was composed for liturgical use in the Catholic Church and liturgy in Catholic Church uses speech-song (cantillation). So again, those verses should be sung a bit faster and the ends shouldn't be extended so drastically.
