Kathy Bates rightly gets a lot of praise for her performance here, but I think that James Caan deserves a lot of credit, too. He very ably played a man struggling in multiple ways and his reactions to what's happening are incredible. Like at the end. When a well-meaning fan says the one thing guaranteed to most dredge up that horrible experience. And look at his face. He's desperately trying to be polite and gracious while, at the same time, struggling not to vomit.

Personally though, I was equally impressed by James Caan's ability to show such depth of emotion and exude his thoughts, feelings and the reflections of his situation, just through subtle facial movements. He didn't need words or body movements , his face reflected everything. You just put it into better words than I could . Great comment.

Yeah, Kathy Bates deserved the Oscar, but also over time, I realize how exceptional James Caan was in this movie, too. HIs reactions to her insane behavior are perfect. He also gives a believable physical performance playing a person without the use of his legs and makes the pain scenes feel authentic. In fact, I'd say he's as much the reason this film is re-watchable as Bates, because if his performance is any less, it's not worth re-visiting.

One of the interesting things that they changed from the novel is that in the novel, as Paul is writing Misery's Return, he realizes how excellent it is, so he types up a new cover page and just burns blank pages. After he is rescued, Misery's Return gets published and is immensely successful.

Also, in the book, the cripple scene is of his foot being cut off, not his ankles crunched. And as a bonus, you actually get to read excerpts of the "Misery's Return" book right there in the novel.

This is a movie I can watch over and over again and not get bored, it's a perfect movie in my opinion. Kathy Bates and James Caan give the performances of their lives! She famously apologized 'for the ankles' in her Oscar speech too haha.

If no one else has mentioned it, the actress who played Marcia Sindell (the publisher or agent in the beginning of the movie) was Lauren Bacall. She was a huge star and married to Humphrey Bogart. They made several iconic films together. A true star from the 40s, 50s & 60s. It was good to see her in a high profile movie towards the end of her illustrious career. I just had to acknowledge her! Another wonderful movie adapted from a Stephen King novel is Dolores Claiborne also starring Kathy Bates. You should give that one a whirl!

Way back in the 80s, Stephen King was heavily addicted to drugs. And that addiction found its way into his novels (he famously doesn't remember writing Cujo). Speaking in a Rolling Stone interview, King said about Misery - "Misery is a book about cocaine. Annie Wilkes is cocaine. She was my number-one fan."

Dolores Claiborne is not a sequel to Misery in any way. It's simply another very good Stephen King adaptation featuring Kathy Bates. That's why recommenders lump both together.

James Caan is a Hollywood actor from the 70’s,80’s, & 90’s, & 2000’s. He also guest starred on tv cop show, the Hawall 5-0 reboot. Long since been canceled. But now syndicated. This was James’s son also an actor Scott Caan tv show. Scott’s been in the movies Varsity Blues( 1999), and Oceans 11, Ocean’s 12, & Ocean’s 13 franchise. James Caan passed away this year. R.I.P. James An amazing performance by James along side the incredible Kathy Bates. Kathy won her first Oscar for portrayal Annie Wilkes in Misery. A saw Misery as an adult on the big screen in theaters, she scared the hell out of me. I had nightmares. Misery was a great movie. ❤But book is really great. I’m a fan of Stephen King. I own three novels Cujo, Christine, & The Shining. Three were made into films. Very scary stuff. Have a good night.

Honestly, I felt Caan's acting didn't fit the tone of the movie. In most instances he seemed annoyed to be in his situation rather than terrified. Bates really carried the film.

Castle Rock season 2 showcases a young Annie Wilkes with prequel ties to Misery. Lizzy Caplan who portrays the younger Annie Wilkes does an amazing job and does the character and Kathy Bates a true service. Definitely worth a look-see.

It feels important to acknowledge and appreciate Mrs' eagle eyes for the smallest details... @18:27 "our ever observant slooth" mentions the vintage linoleum flooring in the kitchen. I immediately skipped back to take a look since i felt certain I could picture in my own head exactly what pattern Mrs was mentioning. And I smiled because the thought had instantly transportated my memories to my Grandparents ranch style home built in the late 50s here in Atlanta, GA. I was fortunate that I had the honor of inheriting that house in the 90s. When it was extensively renovated in the 2000s, it was quite necessary albeit with sadness that the original kitchen flooring was removed. That said, I proudly cut out a few squares of it to keep to help me feel like I could better maintain my fond memories to having crawled on that flooring as a young child and then grown into adulthood walking across it before eventually having my own children crawl across the same faded green pattern so many times. Is this quite a "silly" thing to emotional attachment to? ... Most certainly, yes. But I'm smiling right now as I type this and that a good thing. And since this specific flooring is clearly something not I have experienced alone... I did a quick Google search. retrorenovation.com/2020/03/31/history-armstrong-flooring-pattern-5352-best-selling-20th-century/ Apparently this pattern, "Armstrong Flooring #5352" for the original red (#5351 for my family's green?) is THE granddaddy of US resilant flooring having been in continous production from 1932 to 2000! So Thank You to the Mrs for stiring a simple but impactful memory for me with an off the cuff reaction observation. 🙏🏻 I know I'm not alone in my ongoing enjoyment of y'all's content. 🤍

I like the theory that Kathy Bates represents Stephen King's struggle with substance abuse in the first half of his writing career. He writes something and upon completion his self doubt makes him second guess it's quality so he abuses drugs and alcohol to redo it over and over again. King has said that he's writing entire works, such as Cujo, with no memory whatsoever of actually writing them. Kathy Bates certainly portrays a women who is mentally unhinged and emotionally disregulated but there could be another angle her character can be seen from if you know King's past.

Stephen King the master narrator! Even without the supernatural element he writes highly thrilling stories. 2 other highly recommanded movies in this style are "Stand by me" and of course the outstanding "The Shawshank Redemption" . Both worth a reaction video!

A few people have explained the Dolores Claiborne connection, but I'll add that Stephen King wrote the character of Dolores with Kathy in mind after being so impressed by her work in Misery. It's a very different film from Misery (more tonally in line with Shawshank or The Green Mile), but the movie and Kathy are excellent.

Dolores Claiborne isn't a sequel to Misery, but it does have connections to Gerald's Game. I recommend Dolores Claiborne as it's highly underrated, and I think one of Kathy Bate's best performances. Gerald's Game is pretty good too! Some of the events in both stories happen at the same time during a solar eclipse.

Misery is my favorite King adaptation. Yes, even over The Shining, The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, or Stand By me. Only The Mist comes close to its perfection (and only because Frank Darabont improved the ending from the original novella).

Its very important to know where Steohen King was in his life when he wrote this book. In the first real peak of his career, when he was writing The Stand and Pet Sematary and Cujo, he was at the peak of his alcohol and cocaine addiction. He knew that his addictions actually helped him achieve success so quitting was a difficult idea. He wrote Misery as he was going clean. Annie directly represents cocaine. The whole story is a metaphor representing how his success related to his addiction. By the time the novel was published, he was clean and he's stayed so ever since.

To date, Bates is the only actor to win an Oscar for playing a King character. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were both nominated for Carrie. Morgan Freeman and Michael Clarke Duncan were both nominated for playing their respective roles in Shawshank and The Green Mile; which were both directed and adapted by Frank Darabont, who also adapted and directed The Mist.

From King himself: Take the psychotic nurse in Misery, which I wrote when I was having such a tough time with dope. I knew what I was writing about. There was never any question. Annie was my drug problem, and she was my number-one fan. God, she never wanted to leave. He never said the fan thing himself. Other fans and another writer pushed that too obvious angle onto the book.

Stephen King played the main character in an episode on (also wrote) Creepshow (1982) His character was hilarious. Episodic like "Twilight Zone The Movie" but horror. Was one of the first horror films I saw when I was 12. :P

When I was at college, I gave a presentation on film soundtracks, and chose horror films. I didn't do that for the sake of mischief, but because they have the most extreme examples of technique (for example sudden changes from very quiet to very loud for suspense and shock). I used clips from Saw (the final reveal), Teeth (Dawn biting Brad), American Psycho (Patrick axes Paul) and Misery (the hobbling scene). The lecturer had no issue with the rest, but she had to look away when I used the hobbling scene. Not that it mattered. I was talking about the use of quiet strings to give way for the sound of his ankles breaking.

Great reactions, guys! Kathy Bates did a terrific job portraying Annie Wilkes. And there were a couple of differences between the book and the movie. Paul's stay under Annie's charge was much more horrific. I can't remember if she removed one or both of his thumbs. That sticks out to me because in Paul's inner monologue he refers to a "thumb-ectomy". And I just thought it was an interesting use of words. Also, the hobbling scene? In the book she removes his feet. Harrowing.

In the novel Misery, Paul actually does write Misery back to life and it becomes his best-selling novel (he burns a bunch of scrap pages and error pages with a title page on it and hides the real novel from Annie once it’s done). Annie also runs over the sheriff with a lawnmower in the novel.

I'm not sure how many people have mentioned this already, but Misery, The Dark Half and Secret Window are all connected with the theme. They all ask the question of what happens when the line between reality and fiction is blurred. In Misery it's about the reader, The Dark Half is about the writer and Secret Window is about both.

Kathy Bates was so amazingly scary in this movie I didn't think I could watch her in a film again. Luckily Fried Green Tomatoes was on TV a few days later and her character is such a sweetie pie in that movie that I got over it 😜 Same thing happened when I saw Matt Damon in The Talented Mr. Ripley. Kudos to you for suggesting the truffle-sniffing pig, and the practical notion of Annie taking the smudgy paper back to the store. These are the types of observations from a uniquely creative mind, I think. Other Stephen King movies worth a watch are Stand by Me, The Shining, Carrie and Shawshank Redemption (sorry, can't remember which of these you've seen). Great video!

grew up in FL most of my life, we have about 3 weeks of winter a year, the rest is summer. always loved getting to go outside, walk around in a hoodie, not sweating profusely from the humidity. after about my early 20's, the cold started being really annoying. probably because i stopped wearing a hoodie and jeans all the time

Fun fact: In the novel, Annie Wilkes doesn't break his ankles: she cuts off his foot with an ax, and cauterizes the wound with a blowtorch. That scene was the big reason screenwriter William Goldman decided to do the movie, and when they changed it, he SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEAMED. Eventually, though, he acknowledged that they made the right decision, that (to paraphrase) "if they'd done what I wanted, it would have been too much: the audience would have hated it," and it would have taken them right out of the movie.
