Bates is obviously fantastic but Caan's performance really holds this movie together. He was battling alcohol addiction at the time and his career was on the slide, and I just love his vulnerability and strength in this. Oh, and the Liberace song at the end (chef's kiss)

Hey Madison, Paul's ultimate victory all the sweeter, when he's denying Annie any closure to her beloved story. Such a perfectly desperate instance of taking revenge. It's even better in the book, where he's actually just burning a bunch of blank paper while the real manuscript is hidden under the bed. In the end Paul actually gets to give the world his new masterpiece. The story of how it was written will make it an instant best seller and make Paul a God among legends.
@jeffburnham66112 жыл бұрын
A good thriller doesn't always involve over the top nudity, or senseless gore. Stephen King has mastered the art of the horror/thriller, drawing the audience into the story. You can almost feel what Paul is going through every moment with Annie.

This is the 2nd Stephen King story Rob Reiner adapted into a movie. The first was Stand By Me (1986) which is arguably the most un-Stephen King story as it’s a (slightly morbid) coming of age story (originally titled The Body) and not a horror story at all. It’s a great film and a gem from the 80s. That movie is also the reason Rob Reiner named his production company Castle Rock Productions. I definitely highly recommend it.
@Elephant202423 күн бұрын
Kathy Bates was terrifying in this movie. 'Misery' was filmed in Nevada’s oldest town Genoa, which stood in for Silver Creek, CO. The crew built four buildings on Genoa’s main boulevard - a cafe, radiator shop, sheriff’s station, and a general store. The production also filmed at Nevada’s oldest thirst parlor, the Genoa Bar and Saloon.

I think that final scene with the waitress proclaiming herself as "Paul's number one fan" qualifies as one of the scariest scenes ever. No one really thinks much of Anthony Perkin's in-jail-cell final face as we hear "Mother" say she won't even HARM a fly and Perkins looks up so dangerously sly. THAT is a scary scene. "I'm your Number One Fan" achieves this same level of horror, too. (Thanks to REPLY MomD-!!)

There's a book entitled, "Four Screenplays" written by the late William Goldman. He adapted Stephen King's "Misery" for the film. Mr. Goldman also wrote the screenplay for the adaptation of his original novel, "The Princess Bride", also directed by Rob Reiner. These four essays are comprised of interesting anecdotes and behind the scenes recollections of Mr. Goldman on working with directors and actors. The other two essays are about his experiences writing his original screenplays, "Marathon Man" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid".

If you like more of the awesome Kathy Bates in another Stephen King adaptation but different than this one, you'll want to check out Dolores Claiborne from 1995. Jennifer Jason Leigh also stars in it. A little quote on Wikipedia: "The film was well-received by critics, with the performances of Bates and Leigh being especially praised. Kathy Bates stated in a retrospective interview that her performance as the titular Dolores was her favorite performance she had ever given."

Your Film Fridays keep getting better and better, Madison. I was super interested how you'd react to this as a writer, though no woman I know, writer or not, would go for a drive by herself in a blizzard without snow tires. That seems like "man against nature" behavior and nature usually wins. I love the way Paul Sheldon ultimately found Annie's weakness. He couldn't outrun or outthink her, but she was vulnerable when it came to Misery. I think this is the only thriller where a villain is defeated by a manuscript. Keep these wonderful videos coming, and congratulations on finishing your novel! I'm looking forward to seeing you published.

When you commented that it couldn't get any worse after she broke his ankles with the sledgehammer, I thought if you read the book, you'd see it _could've_ been a _LOT_ worse, b/c in the book, she chopped off his feet with an axe and then cauterized them with a blow torch. I feel your pain Madison on several levels. The Sherriff really gets me though. I think it's a pretty consistent end to a benevolent character in many Steven King's work. There is always a benevolent side character instrumental in helping the protagonist escape their torture only to have the antagonist unexpectedly take them out.

If I ever get it published I'll have him to thank (twice over because when I was young and wanting to make the change from kids books like Hardy Boys and 3 Investigators to adult books. So I tried The Lord Of The Rings since it was so famous. Big mistake. Made it 200 pages in before I gave up. Was about to give up reading all together when someone gave me a copy of Stephen King's "The Stand". Another big book but an easy and great read. Bought "Magician" by Feist next and have been non stop reading ever since). To anyone who wants to start a novel I highly recommend "On Writing" . It's one of the few books with actual handy advice.
