Same. In my opinion, the US remake is inferior. But it is a matter of taste. Ringu relies more on slow building terror and a grounded atmosphere, while the US version is heavy on special effects jump scares and action. So, I'm eager to see how you feel about the original. Just a heads up, never watch the US remake of The Eye, watch the original instead.

Yeah, I just wish you had started with the Japanese original. The American version seems a bit infantilized and with those character changes it's like forced into overused tropes. But still, if this one were the original it would still be a great movie, and it is good anyway. I'm not complaining, I'm happy you're doing it - after all it's already a classic and done it in such a short time since release.

I saw this in theaters with my cousin. We were just terrified out of our minds by the TV scene, and went outside in the dark for my mom to pick us up. We get in my mom's van, still trying to calm down. When suddenly my mom excitedly tells us to look behind us in the backseat. I kid you not, my mom had just purchased a new TV. It was sitting right behind us in the vehicle. We legit screamed in terror, and sat shaking in fear the whole ride home. My mom never liked me seeing scary movies after that. 😆

I totally understand the Mrs....I was in my 30s already when I watched this in cinema in 2002, "steeled" by watching Slasher movies for two decades. Yet this one got me. Goosebumps all over, and later that night, when lay in my bed and needed to pee, I switched on all the lights on the way to the bathroom, and went there and back again with pretty quick steps... Honestly - at that time, and prior to this movie, I thought, nothing could get that reaction out of me anymore. We live and learn. 😂

I had the DVD that came out after this. It had an option to watch the full video that was on the tape. Of course I watched it. The cool thing was, that when you watched it, it disabled all the buttons on the DVD player so you couldn't stop it. Then it went to black for like 30 seconds and then played the sound of a phone ringing. really cool. Really creepy.

This movie was one my most haunting, freaked-out, and best theater experiences. I was with a girl, and we just randomly picked The Ring. We had NO IDEA what it was. We hadn't seen a trailer, we didn't know it was thriller/horror - we knew NOTHING. The movie haunted me for weeks, and it freaked me out so much that I eventually became a huge fan of it. It's so impactful because it's so good. The way it's all put together is phenomenal.

You probably will never get a horror movie like this anymore, focuses on storytelling, character building, atmosphere setting, and show you the right amount of scares which ultimately brings you the effect just like what Jaws did to swimmers. It didn't rely on constant jumpscares like horror movies nowadays, when you finish the movie, you forget everything about it afterwards. In my opinion, The Ring is one of the best remakes and also one of the best horrors to date.

I saw this movie in the theater around Halloween 2002 when I was thirty. Along with Paranormal Activity in 2007, no movie in the past 20 years affected me so much. I was a lot like you were afterwards, I was unsettled but couldn’t say why. I love the movie now (probably seen it 20 times), but I was gutted watching it with a bunch of strangers in public. I was still living with my parents and working and was so thankful that my mom and dad (who were 71 and 72) were next door to my bedroom and I wasn’t living alone like I do now.

At the time...Japanese horror was all the rage, and Ringu must have been the scariest movie I had seen up to that point. The pale Japanese girl with long black hair has become so Iconic that now 20 years later, people still cosplay to that look, and it's still creepy, especially during Halloween. So I can relate to what you just said. I was around 20 something and we had gone to the cinema to watch those movies....People actually walked out and screamed during the movie!

Let Me In was a remake of Let The Right One In. Probably the best American remake of an international horror movie. I watched both and amazed how good a job the American one did. Both will scare you and creep you out equally. One particular "twist" was "removed" in the remake, but in hindsight, it was a fair choice because it would have been like a clone of the original, too identical. Still, creepy as hell.

In my opinion, the American Ring is superior to Ringu for a few reasons. Firstly, I think the cinematography and music are way better, and that makes a huge difference. But most of all, in Ringu, the characters figure things out through psychic visions, while in The Ring they figure things out using good old fashioned detective work. It makes the characters seem more realistic and grounded. This, mind you, is probably the ONLY instance in all of J-horror in which the American version is better.

No joke, this is my #1 favorite horror movie of all time and it easily surpasses the original material with quite a few poignant themes added to the mix (how omnipresent media is in our life [perfect to spread a curse - should change to smartphones/internet these days!], how it alters our perspective of the world, not to mention the entire strained mother & son relationship subplot, etc.). Hearing the "unaltered" sequence of Samara saying "But I do, and I'm sorry, it won't stop." is absollutely chilling. Yup, Samara with her power of projected thermography would burn these images of horror into the animals and her adoptive parents head to torment them, and it didn't look like an issue of lacking nurturing, it was all her being evil. That twist and the fact that evil wins in the end with Racheal being forced to spread the curse is just the perfect ending for this movie. IGNORE ALL SEQUELS. They are incredibly bad and ruin what made the first one great.

Ring 2 is definitely a big downgrade in quality from this one, which is a shame too since the director of the Japanese original helmed that sequel. But it's not like the Japanese films weren't often subject to really stupid plot details and sub par acting. But I do think Hideo Nakata was just the wrong choice for an American $50 million English language film. It comes off cheap even though it's a budget increase. and without spoiling things, when Rachel visits Sissy Spacek and they discuss who Samara's father is, that stuff is so dumb. And that's the stuff you honestly avoid by not watching the Japanese films. Once it gets into possession and ancient Ocean gods I think it's too much. I think The Ring is best as a stand alone ghost story, it is very unique as ghost stories go. Once they free Samara / Sadako from the tape is just becomes normal ghost movie which imo is a lot less cool.

I feel bad that Mrs. Movies had such an unpleasant experience but it just goes to show how well "The Ring" was made. There are quite a few scary moments but I think one of the scariest is when Aiden gets frightened when he finds out Rachel helped free Samara. Then what's supposed to happen?! What have they unleashed?!?! This is going to get worse?!?!?! The original story is a novel. I think the Japanese movie is a more faithful adaption but there are a number of things that didn't work well when attempting to convert it into a movie and I think the US version did an excellent job around those issues making it a better movie experience. Other than those changes, both movies are extremely similar. Even all of the settings look alike. I was disappointed with "The Ring 2". "Rings" was all right.

Laying in my bed getting ready to go to sleep thinking about the movie...and then it happened...the TV turned on all by itself and went to the static channel. My body froze, my chest instantly began pounding like a jackhammer as I prepared to fight a demon coming out of the tv. as you can guess nothing happened, however, it took all of my courage to go unplug the TV after that so I knew for sure if it happened again to GTFO. the weird thing is my tv was set up for AUX inputs so when you turn it on it goes to a solid blue screen and waited for input from my PlayStation. the TV had never done that before or since either. Freaky

To me this is one of the rare occasions were the US version tops the original one. The original japanese version is great, but this remake is, at least to me, much scarier in tone. Doesn't happen often, but sometimes a great director can make a good source material even better.

This was during the Japanese Horror craze and also during the Jump-Scare era of film-making. Which I can understand why you say this one is better. IMO, this is the movie that probably perfected the jump scare and fake-scare tactics that we all know today. Some people say the Scream movies did that, but those films kinda spoofed horror tropes. That being said, yes I agree the director has to get credit for remaking a classic horror movie by using these now recognizable tropes and gimmicks.

Agreed, imo the american version is better in every way. Specially the details they implemented that intertwine with each other in a way that makes the story more "cohesive".

Correct, so in the opening scene she was slyly trying to get her friend to watch it, which didn't happen, so Samara got her on the 7th day.

This movie will always have a creep factor for me. I was maybe six or seven when it came it out. I remember watching the scene where it shows the video tape in whole, as soon it was over my parents call a call right then...it was a telemarketer but it was a creepy coincidence I'll never forget.

I still think the original Japanese version is a lot more creepy. The ghost in the western version just looks like Regan from The Exorcist with silly scan lines effect.

I think the fact that Sadako is an adult (so she is taller than Samara) has something to do with that. When she comes out of the tv she is literally a bigger threat. The Japanese version also did a better job of obscuring her face behind her hair, which further dehumanises her.

Ringu is a little bit scary for a first time watch, scarier sound design for example but I think Mrs Movies will handle it better because most of the scares come from not knowing what to expect and the plot is more or less the same. I think The Grudge also has matching Japanese / American series but the Japanese version also has a Ring/Grudge crossover which is fun.

Pretty much all of the film was shot in Washington State, with the exception of the lighthouse which is in Newport, Oregon. Personally, I would have used the Destruction Island lighthouse off of Kalaloch, Washington, but they didn't. The Quinault ferry was used in this movie and was decommissioned in 2007 and has since been scrapped. The bridge that can be seen in one of the clips is the Deception Pass bridge, and that shot of the stone bridge over the waterfall looks like Christine Falls on Mt. Rainier, but I'm not sure if they had permission to film at that location. There are even a few comics out there punking Samara by putting the TV on the window sill so when she comes out she falls out the window, or another one shows putting a tv in front of the main TV so she crawls from one into the other. Interestingly enough, I've been to Samarra, Iraq and they have a crazy-looking spiral minaret there that always reminded me of the Tower of Babel. The more you know...

I haven't seen the second movie. I don't know if they go further into what Samara's powers are. But it's said in this movie that she made the tape out of nothing. When the doctor was asking her about the pictures that look like x-rays, Samara says that they just are. Meaning she created them from her mind. Like she willed them into existence. And the tape is the same thing. Great reaction. Maybe you'll check out The Grudge sometime. It's made by the same director and released around the same time too. It's another movie that'll likely give you goosebumps over and over this The Ring did.

Mr Movies do you know about the Easter egg that had me PETRIFIED of this movie? I wonder if it’s on your copy? After I watched for the first time on DVD I was on the main menu. If you move the cursor down past the last option. It normally goes to the top yes? No! It had a hidden option like how Naomi Watts finds the light house in the film. I clicked it and low and behold it PLAYS THE CURSED TAPE. But plot twist! It also LOCKS your remote so you can not exit out or pause etc. I ran to the tv and unplugged everything! My mom was mad because it messed up her stories getting recorded on the vcr! See if it’s on your copy! ❤ you two are awesome!

I started off watching two other reactor channels. Dasha of Russia I watch because Dasha is adorable and everything even remotely sad makes her cry and it makes me remember why I loved a movie the first time I watched it. Also I want to hold her and comfort her. She's like a sad kitten I watch Popcorn in Bed because Cassie, and her sister Carly, when she's on, get terrified when movies are scary and try to hide behind their blankets. It's hilarious! What they both have in common is that the reactors are people I know I'd like. Dasha is the sweetest thing ever and Cassie is a fine woman that anyone would be proud to have as a friend. The "You, Me and the Movies" couple are great too. He's a friendly, affable guy that I'd happily hang out with, and she's kinda special. I saw something where she was thanking him for putting up with her when she had some issues, and it was so sweet I fell in love with them both. Also, she has beautiful expressive eyes, and she gets house goosebumps when scared. What's not to love?

I didn’t like the American sequels. I liked Ringu very much, but, and uncommon for me, I liked this one more than Ringu. I enjoyed the Japanese sequel and prequel as well. Much more than the American sequels. The Ring is a concise trimmed concentrated translation of Ringu, and heavily guided by the score. It feels like a beautiful sad song. Ringu feels more lived in. Less of a score, paced more closely to life experiences.
