Kathy Bates’ performance won her the Academy Award for Best Actress, making Misery the only film based on a Stephen King novel to win an Oscar. Also Stephen King has stated that Misery is one of his top ten favorite film adaptations.

Kathy would forever become a legend after playing this role. Whenever I watch a movie and she enters, I am so happy. Because I know she is going to deliver. Kathy Bates has to be one of the most natural actors I have ever seen, her performances are seemingly effortless.

I don’t think I’ve ever commented but I genuinely love your reaction to this. I read the book in junior high, saw the film when it came out and it does not disappoint. I agree with you it gives you a very different feeling than other horror films. Not too much gore, super heavy on the suspense and it doesn’t skimp on King’s biting sarcasm delivered perfectly by Caan. The comedic quips and comebacks are stellar.

This was Kathy Bates’ breakout role that made her famous. She had been an unknown stage actress for a couple of decades and only had small film roles in the 80’s. She won a well deserved Oscar and her career skyrocketed.

Great reaction to Annie's escalating mania. I always wince at James Caan's acting when he crawls out of bed, you feel his agony on the floor. Your idea that Annie smashed his legs with the crowbar to increase his dependence on her is something I like the idea of. I've not read the book to know if that happened or is suggested.

In King's original concept for this story, it was a novella length (mini-novel) where Annie kills Paul after he writes Misery's return, and she uses his skin to bind the manuscript. But King said Paul turned out to be more resourceful and had a stronger will to live than he originally thought, so he turned it into a full-length novel where he survives because "Nobody wants to root for a character for a full book only to find out the pig ate him." There would have been some real irony to Paul getting fed to Misery the pig, considering how he felt about Misery Chastain!

Absolutely love this movie. Both Kathy Bates and James Caan nailed it! The book is a lot more brutal. For example she cuts off his thumb when he complains about the N missing from the typewriter. She cuts off his leg instead of hobbling him. Etc. It’s a real great read.

"I'm your number one fan." Fun Fact: Director Rob Reiner cameos as a helicopter pilot. Gun Enthusiast Fact: Annie's (Kathy Bates) revolver is a Colt Cobra "D" Frame .38 revolver. Automobile Enthusiast Fact: Annie's (Kathy Bates) jeep is a 1974 Jeep Cherokee S [SJ]. Paul's (James Caan) car is a 1966 Ford Mustang. Sheriff Buster's (Richard Farnsworth) car is a 1972 Chevrolet Blazer [K-5]. Lost In Adaptation Fact: While there were many minor changes from the novel, there was one major change. In the novel, Annie (Kathy Bates) cuts off Paul's (James Caan) foot to prevent him from escaping. Screenwriter William Goldman had stated that the reason he decided to adapt the book to film was because of this gruesome scene, and the effect it would have on the audience. However, Rob Reiner and Andrew Scheinman's script revision changed the method of torture to Paul getting his ankles broken with a sledgehammer. Goldman was opposed to the change until viewing the film. Typewriter Enthusiast Fact: The typewriter that Annie (Kathy Bates) buys for Paul (James Caan) to use is a Royal Model 10 typewriter. The Royal 10 was one of the first successfully mass produced typewriters which would set the technical standard for most typewriters that would follow it. Produced between 1914 and 1934, Paul's model can be pinpointed to be from 1914 to 1923 due to the double paneled beveled glass located on both sides of the machine. Models from 1924 to 1934 had only single paneled beveled glass. The 10 model would see use well after the model was discontinued as Royal Typewriters subsidiary Rigal Rebuilt would completely refurbish and rebuild the machines after they reached the intended lifespan giving the model many more years of use well into the 1950's and 60's. Due to its mass sales and twenty year production the Royal 10 remains one of the attainable typewriters that can be picked up by collectors of the machines in the 21st Century.

I got to see the stage production of Misery in NYC starring Bruce Willis and Laurie Metcalf back in 2016. It wasn't anything all that great, though the mechanics of the production were pretty cool, and the hobbling scene sure was done just like in the movie. Just not the most engaging show overall that lacked real tension, but I wish I could have seen several times over. And no matter what, I'll always hold dear that I got to see Bruce Willis perform live.

You know she most likely did that to his legs. That accident wasn’t bad enough to cause that much damage. She did say how proud she was of the “work” she did on those legs. In the book, she cut his feet off and cauterized the wound with a blow torch. After Paul complained about the letter “E” key falling off the typewriter, she cut off his thumb, if I remember correctly. She also ran over the Sheriff’s head with a riding mower. In movies they always make it less dramatic and also don’t include some things since they are pressed for time limits. Books are always better than in films.

32:04 In the novel Annie did chop off one of Paul's legs (beneath the knee). Novel Paul was far more traumatized than movie Paul, having continuous hallucinations of Annie crawling out of the grave and coming for him even after killing her, and also was plagued by a lifetime of phantom pain from his missing leg. Stephen King confessed that two major events from his life inspired the story of Misery: the first one was his near-fatal car accident (which broke his femurs and also made him very fearful he could never finish the Dark Tower series as promised if he died early), the second one was how Martin Chapman, rabid fan and murderer of John Lennon, had originally chosen King as his idol/target but lost interest and switched to Lennon. There *are* people like Annie Wilkes out there whose mentality is like a bomb, and a bomb only need to go off once to destroy someone.

This movie is so good, but I love the book. It’s a fever dream of a read, but the insight to so many things, particularly Stephen Kings mindset at the point. It’s also fascinating because the way Kathy plays Annie vs how she is depicted in the book? They’re very close but Kathy, even in a role as terrifying as Annie, is so personable. You don’t like Annie, she absolutely horrifies you, but you always get the vibe that you could hang with the actor playing her. That isn’t present in the book, at all.

James Caan was such a renowned and respected character actor by the time this film was released and Kathy Bates was basically completely unknown. It was considered a bit wild and controversial for such a major film to have such a huge star in James Caan play second to an unknown like Kathy. Truly an iconic film. The horror elements aren’t as visible or visceral as modern horror films but the themes and atmosphere definitely fit into our modern sensibilities extremely well because of obsessed stan culture.
