That's not what she said, just that any new misery on top of what she already carry wouldn't be of equal value to Nott's. Nott's misery is pretty fucking huge, being made into something she despises, separated from her family, traumatized in the process (that involved literary dying) and even having to deal with her mind and behavior changing to the point that she hesitates to turning back given the chance. Yasha and Caleb are the most broken of the others, so I don't think they could offer much more. That's why Jester from the start was the best temptation: she's the one who has the most to give.

The actuality of what Jester really did was insane. She made a huge deal of her hands, something that would truly be awful to lose, then acted like she was searching for loopholes to make it seem like she didn't have any secret plan. Then right as the hag was sure she had her and became confident in the deal, Jester asks the smallest favor. Then she uses her sweet behavior to hide anything suspicious about sharing the cupcake. The hag thought she had won even after she lost

@@d3tach3d Reading the spells effect, Matt could have EASILY made that fail. It says " A modified memory doesn’t necessarily affect how a creature behaves, particularly if the memory contradicts the creature’s natural inclinations, alignment, or beliefs. An illogical modified memory, such as implanting a memory of how much the creature enjoyed dousing itself in acid, is dismissed, perhaps as a bad dream. The GM might deem a modified memory too nonsensical to affect a creature in a significant manner." It's pretty illogically for a creature who revels in misery to go back on a promise to another and give up that misery because she enjoyed one interview. I'd categorize it as contradicting the creature's natural inclinations. But rule of cool totally applies here and Jester did a pro gamer move so I'm all for allowing it.

Jester's Blueberry Cupcake Con was, hands down, one of the best moves of the campaign so far. Laura played it perfectly, really amping up Jester's sweetness, innocence and charm so that she could bamboozle not only the witch, but also Matt. Matt was prepared for trickiness, but he was completely blindsided by what she pulled out.

Which was really Liam counting while Sam distracted Matt. They only saved 1gp from the scam, but the look on Laura's face when she realized what they did was priceless. I think that's the moment when she realized that if you can sucker the DM with role-playing, then your character can sucker the NPC. And it finally paid off here. Kind of pleased it didn't happen that way. Didn't really fit the narrative of the story for Beau to just leave. I wonder if Marsha, like Matt being outsmarted, felt like she'd had a big moment in the spotlight taken away from her, hence her reaction. But it really didn't make sense that her character would just up and walk in this scenario, even if it was to help Nott, such a big reaction from her with no build up felt so out of place.
@TheGrumbleduke2 жыл бұрын
It kind of makes sense for Beau; she's in a really messed up head-space from the last day or so, and it isn't unreasonable to think she has a "I don't deserve nice things" complex, so seeing that her life is finally starting to get somewhere (personally, professionally, socially etc.) it would make sense for her to feel she has to self-sabotage. Marisha also made sure to bring up Luc and TJ; I wonder if Beau was thinking that it was her duty to suffer so that others could be happy, that she had to be kicked out of her home so that TJ could have a good life (given what was said and seen there). Beau handing over her "protective" necklace to her little brother reflected that kind of thinking - that he needed to be kept safe even if it cost her. I can see this action fitting with Beau's arrogance (and attention-seeking), self-loathing and tendency to self-sabotage. I'm not sure it would have made sense for her two episodes ago, or even in a few episodes time, but if there was any point in her story where it does make sense it would be just after confronting her family. It would be sucked for the wider campaign and story, but I think it works for Beau individually.
@LightDragon7772 жыл бұрын
@@whatsacone Yeah, she does have a tendency to try to insert herself into other characters' moments rather than letting them have the spotlight for a change. Her metagaming to go knock on the door during Jester's interview could've ruined one of the most iconic moments of this campaign. Fjord was an orphan without parents to raise him who saw his closest father figure get dragged into the depths, Jester didn't know who her father was - and her mother was essentially a performing bird trapped within a cage? If you think about it, Beau is also being extremely selfish. She thinks that she's so miserable (lmao, an heiress to a fucking wine empire that shot down her inheritance due to her daddy issues, I consider the accounts of her father being physically abusive as lies from Marisha to spice things up, as Matt gave 0 indications that any member of her family, aside from Beau, were prone to physical violence) that she can sacrifice herself to level out the playing field, even though sacrificing herself would not only cause the M9 to lose a lot of contacts in the Cobalt Soul and access to the services (tomes and teleportations) the M9 would also have a decreased standing in the Court of the Dwindalian Empire, since Beau was the one who was acting the favor curator in that Court (Caleb being the favor cuartor for the Court of Krynn Dynasty), and the M9 would also feel as though they weren't good enough to protect Beau, and that Beau didn't ever actually trust the. Of course, Beau's inability to the truth about what happened the night she left, makes it obvious she still doesn't trust them. Oh, also, I love the amount of metagaming Marisha has done the past two episodes, mostly because I love seeing two completely different backgrounds being connected by a Player's need for attention. Nott's backstory has always been very dark and brutal and not at all connected to Beau's "Oh I have a shitty dad who saw this tarrot card reader years ago, I'm really torn up because he was super strict and tried to raise me to take care of the *fucking wine empire he created*" which is so fucking quaint when compared to being drowned and resurrected as a fucking Goblin, a race that you've hated your entire fucking life.
Andrew You seem incredibly one sided when it comes to your views on Beau who was emotionally manipulated by a terrible father that even Matt said was one of the most dirty characters he’s had to play also 1. They would still likely keep their connections until they ended the fucking war cause why would the Cobalt Soul suddenly turn on people stopping a war and extremely close friends of Beauregard 2. She wasn’t at all hijacking “Nott’s moment” and you can see that no one in the cast thought or felt that since it was merely a journey to help fix Nott that meant Beau was forced to interact with her family. Nott had her moments when she reunited with her family and went to find Yeza and so on. These last few episodes were to help Nott but not for Nott. Also everyone in this episode was going to go in a offer what they could to try and save Nott and she thought of giving up everything she had. It was unclear though if she was “overpaying” which is likely by design however this showed she was willing to pay whatever she could to give Nott her life back (and by extension give Luc his mum back) 3. She never said her father physically abused her but slapped her that one time , you shouldn’t put words in her mouth. They talked about this on talks very clearly and during CR it’s never implied that it is physical but more emotional abuse. 4. Beau leaving society would mean she would have to drop everything she worked for by herself (becoming a expositor and creating a new family for herself) and so was a sacrifice that affected her most of all and showed what she was willing to give up for the MN and Nott in particular. Just because she could have had a wine business doesn’t undercut her feelings and memories towards her father who ended up giving her away to the cobalt soul after he gave up. Marisha talked about how Beau was a kid who just wanted the attention of her parents but was treated like shit to then be traded off to the monastery, that is something that would emotionally scar someone deeply even though she came from a wealthy background. Beau also said she wanted to inherit the family business and expand it but her father dismissed her ideas so she didn’t really shoot down the prospect but instead her dad changed his mind.

I was confused when she said it. Like, why is she pushing how good the cupcake is? The whole situation was Laura repeatedly turning aside Matt's inclination to disallow the gambit, which was a fascinating parallel with what Jester was doing with the witch. @@DanKaschel That's what I love the most about this moment. Yes, playing by the book, she probably should have told Matt before hand that she sprinkled the Dust of Deliciousness on the cupcake, giving him a bit more time to see what she was getting at but the fact she surprised him means that she surprised the hag. The moment Jester stepped into the cabin, Laura was placing the bait, she played hesitation, fear, nervousness, and resignation and treated the muffin as just another of Jester's silly antics. Laura was able to turn a faustian bargain into a pleasant encounter just through the blatant refusal to give into the illusion of sacrifice. That is the true power of optimism.
@chickmagnet46264 жыл бұрын
Sacrifice is an evil that is perpetrated on oneself, with the misguided notion that two wrongs make a right. Something that Nott and Beau are unable to see, that is glaringly obvious to Jester.
@bdletoast092 жыл бұрын
Gotta love how Isharnai's demeanor evolves depending of which of the Nein she's talking to. Against Fjord, she remains neutral, explicits her bargain and tries to entice him but doesn't push. She sees the blessing of divinity on him and sense his new found confidence and knows there is nothing he would be ready to sacrifice that would please her. I'm pretty sure she would have been the same with Caduceus, even if his offer had pleased her, she would remain wary of him. Against Beau and Nott, the most vulnerable before her because of her meddling, she is excited, almost voracious. She sense that they're desperate and would throw a lot more that they can bargain in the balance. Against Yasha, she's closed off because there is not much to gain from someone who is already so low. Her offer is uninteresting to her, and I would wager that she would have acted the same way around Caleb (Liam said on Talks that he would have offered to kill the Nein before incenerating her but I don't believe she would have been fooled). And the most interesting one, obviously, is Jester. Travis' joke about the hag suffering from anti-misery is actually spot on. The second Jester enters the cabin, Isharnai loses a bit of her intimidating aura and her grasp on the situation slowly slips away as she just doesn't know how to deal with someone so... positive.

3:44:30 You can see Matt stumbled at how to proceed, the way he rarely did. Laura saw it, took the rein and lead the scene. And then Matt followed the "yes, and..." so beautifully. And at the end, when Jester was telling the others to leave, Fjord was the first one to confirm with Jester that it was ok and then agreed with her right away without asking for the details. Since the most important thing right then was to get away from there.
@bdletoast09Ай бұрын
Yeah. I come back to that scene from time to time because it's wholly unique in the entirety of Critical Role history. Laura dumbfounded Matt. She used a solution he never saw coming and he genuinely had no idea how to proceed and so she took control of the entire scene, forcing her rythm onto him and solidifying her victory without letting Matt the opportunity to change his ruling. I can't claim to know what was going on in his head at that time, but most hags are supposed to be immuned to charm which would make Modify Memory useless and being a boss encounter, Isharnai definitely had access to legendary resistances, so really, had Matt been let any longer into his hesitaton, he could have justified the hag breaking the spell easily... He was only doubting because he was mesuring the pros and cons to overstep Laura's brillant play and by yanking him back into her roleplay, Laura forced the choice to let it go on him. Best fucking player at a table of brillant players.

Jester gets so much flack for not being a healer, but this is a trickery cleric at their PEAK
@parker2121 Жыл бұрын
That's just what I love about Jester. In the past, when I've played D&D, I've avoided classes like cleric because no one wants to be stuck being a support class, right? Laura's unconventional use of the class has made me actively wish I could get into a new campaign as a cleric. She demonstrated a completely different way to play the class than most people know about. Jester is like a warlock with more spell slots and better capabilities in a melee. When Yasha isn't around, she's the party's strength check passer. In a fight, she's a steady damage dealer, and not just against undead or evil creatures. Outside of combat, she's a satellite phone and a low-key charmer, not so much for actual charisma stats as her roleplay. And then yes, she does do some healing when necessary, too. She's versatile as fuck and one hell of a force as an individual. Shit like the time under Bazzoxan when she wasn't even at the table and still, she banished that roper and dimension doored Nott away from what seemed like imminent death. This episode, where she tricked the witch not with persuasion or deception, but her wisdom stat plus a clutch item use. This campaign is stacked with incredible characters and she still kinda stole the show. Since I first started playing D&D in 2010, it's felt like everyone only wants to play bard, rogue, or wizard. I can only imagine there's probably a whole new generation of enthusiastic cleric players in the community nowadays, taking a dick-covered page from Jester's sketchbook and utilizing the severely underrated versatility of the class. Taliesin, too, deserves some credit for making the more traditional idea of a sage healer feel more fun and interesting than the MMORPG stereotype of a cleric being basically a combat accessory to a tank class. Caduceus isn't as much of a damage dealer as Jester, but Tal has done pretty well in his strategies with the spells available to him and his stat build to pull off some serious VIP plays. One class, two extremely different characters. I love this show for the players above all else, but watching them chew on the gameplay mechanics like a Syrian rebel faction turning an old farm tractor into a tank via soviet hand-me-down weaponry and a welding rig is a strong second place
@RoninXDarknight Жыл бұрын
A lot of people don't understand that while clerics can heal they can also do a lot more than that and when played well are arguably one of the most powerful classes in the game. Also it's worth pointing out that Laura initially wanted Jester to be a warlock and only became a cleric because Travis wanted to be a warlock. Given how spell happy Laura tends to be though I'm pretty sure that was one of the best decisions she ever made for Jester.

@@riyanveysel7037 She even has a mysterious magic hand herself, so her interpretation of the event might be totally different from the viewers'. Seeing a floating disembodied hand help her is basically every day for Nott, though she is probably aware of the green cloak being a Traveler thing, and seeing one show up and help her could be quite easily connected assuming she understands what Guiding Bolt does. But proof that the Traveler is real isn't that big a deal anyways, since they know how Clerics work to begin with, it is more the experience of actually seeing him that is impressive, witnessing that Jester is speaking the truth when it comes to her description of the Traveler, and that her source of divine magic isn't something she is lying about. I would actually say that Beau's experience is still better than seeing his cloak, since that informs her about how he behaves, while seeing the cloak doesn't. While Beau’s experience is decidedly more intense and a deeper dive, it is true, Nott has also had a minor experience. Its like Matt is prepping the party for the Traveller’s “coming out party”

"One of the players did something of notice." "OMG SPOILERS HOW COULD YOU BURN HERETIC!" That's my impersonation of a person who browses comments for a video before watching the actual video. They are silly and self-destructive. I love to spoil just to give them what they ask for.

On this day, Jester made the Traveler more proud than he's ever been. I feel like this is EXACTLY what he teaches--playing a little trick, doing a little good, fucking over someone to boot. So good.

Not just fucking someone over, getting one up on someone who is arrogant, narcissistic, and believes themselves to be infallible. It is the core tenant of the Traveler, lay them low with their own hubris.
