Күн бұрын

The tests in this video can be used when diagnosing misfires. Procedures can vary between manufacturers.
In this video we are working on a 2011 Dodge Avenger. This vehicle has a 2.4L engine. Customer complaint is a check engine light. The trouble codes stored are P0303 cylinder 3 misfire and P2308 cylinder 3 ignition coil insufficient ionization.
My first test is to check for power and ground at the cylinder 3 ignition coil. The power supply check is good, as I move over to the ground side the ignition coil starts smoking and melts right in front of me! what happened?! What caused this coil to melt?! Lets find out.
I hope you guys enjoy this video and thanks for watching.

That was a fantastic find. Knowing what your suppose to see is key, and you nailed it. A lot of shops would have just replaced the coil and call it a day. Great job.

Good catch, Tom!! I'm not sure that most folks would have kept looking. And had that coil not smoked in your hands, you may not have looked for another issue! It's good that it happened when it did! Saved that coil for your used parts box. You never know when you'll need to put it on something else, in a pinch! Lol

Very well done, Tom. Most would figure the coil was shorted and replaced it but your video shows that you have to check everything. You need to make sure there isn't another cause.

Not to much storage of energy, after magnetic core got saturated, the DC component heat the coil... awesome detective work!!! well excellent done!!

Great work. That short to ground really put that coil to work! 😁

Very good! At least you go after a probable cause for the coil being cooked like it was and endeed there was a problem on the wires to the PCM. The control wire was shorting to GND making that coil staying on all the time thus killing that coil. Very good work and very good investigation just like you do in your good work that can be seen on your videos. They are excellent and your work too. Thank you for taking some of your time editing this videos containing good information for other professionals on the field. Best regards and sorry about my poor english.

That’s what happens when you put DC into an AC circuit. The coil saturates, then, in next instant, massive heat. Must be a current limiter in the driver circuit to prevent it from immediate damage.
@for2utube
@for2utube 5 жыл бұрын
And, yes, technically it’s pulsed DC that’s used in a proper circuit. Pulsed at a short enough cycle as to not saturate the coil.

I post this in case it helps someone. Had the same problem (MISFIRE P030x). I changed my throttle body, then tried my plugs, then tried my ignition coils, all of it costing me around $300 in parts only to find out that it was my Crankshaft Position Sensor at the transmission. A $20 part! This rough idle, misfire code can be a tricky one! Try the cheap stuff first my friends.

Great study, Tom! The smelloscope really helped to find the root cause. One question (if it's possible to tell) -- was the harness riding on that bolt from the factory, or was it moved by some previous repairs?
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics
@PositiveLeadDiagnostics 5 жыл бұрын
There were factory zip ties holding the harness in place. I think it was there from the factory.

I stepped on the gas and it started misfiring bad blinking check engine light so made it to Auto zone and it said the 3rd Cylinder but I was told it could be coil,plugs, wiring, I replaced plugs and still misfiring 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ any advice or information that can help me? Pls n thanks

@@PositiveLeadDiagnostics Its a 2.4 16 cal. Yes, I finally found it, But I've replaced the Spark Plugs, Coil packs, Changed oil, well the misfire stopped but it's still running rough, 1- When driving, lift foot off pedal n place it back to accelerate you feel a bump bump bump in the pedal.. 2) When coming to a stop as RPMs dropping they shoot back up🤦‍♀️🤔 Especially if AC is on then everything dims down for a second including AC pressure, Idk if it's possible to correspond through email, That would be great if not that's ok too, babygirl653729@gmail.com thank you so much for getting back to me
