Just a "quick n' dirty" diagnosis on a poorly running Euro machine. Someone has been here before, and it looks like they might have made the problem worse!
Sorry about the choppy camera work...might have to get a clip-on camera holder to make the video more fluid when I need to use both hands :)
Link to Ebay DIY Smoke machine that I used in this vid to find the vacuum leak:

Enjoy!

We have a lot of BMW's on our roads. I know lots of people with them. I would never own one. They are amazing machines but they are a liability. Most start life as company cars on lease and under warranty. Most independent shops here, if you turned up at them with a BMW with a problem would tell you to go to the BMW dealership because they don't have the diagnostic equipment. The most popular BMW engine on the road here is the N47 which is the 1.6/1.8/2.0 diesel. It's just mapped differently depending on the vehicle. A sub contractor my boss uses who used to be a heavy diesel mechanic and worked for JCB has his 520D in bits in his workshop right now because it snapped it's timing chain at 86k. The engine is longitudinally mounted and the chain is at the back. You have to dismantle all the suspension and drive train to drop it. I went to help him last night to drop it. Man there was some tool throwing. We took the timing covers off which confirmed snapped chain. He says it's bad design. Finally left at 4 in the morning. Sunday he's going to pull the head and see if there's any other damage and then hopefully repair it and get it back in the car. BMW quoted £5400 to do the job...

Hi Ivan, great video! The lack of a "click" when you push the coil onto the plug is normal. BMW did a redesign (which filtered through to non-OEM) on the coil and they specifically highlighted that there would be no longer the expected "click" sound/feel. I am not sure why they did this, but just so you know it is perfectly normal for new coils.

It's a DISA valve. If the actuator is good, you can just replace to O-ring. Make sure the old DISA valve or new one if you replace it has the upgraded pin fix.

Hi Ivan I noticing that not all BMW have cylinder cylinder miss counter but I notice with the Autel Maxisis in OBD 2 mode 6 and you can see the cylinder count not live but if you erase the fault codes and then they go to zero count start the car and see which one is actually misfiring And yes some BMW do come with NGK spark plug but BMW is constantly changing the supplier and the part number on there spark plugs so if a car came with a certain no. Of plug you go to the dealer it doesn't mean that you are going to get the same ones that the car was built with. As for coils I only put BOSCH or BERU or whatever the OE supplier is.

haha, I see it allll the time. Someone wants a lux car... they pay over what they can afford (should really be getting a used Nissan or something) for a worn out used one and the only money they put into it is for a set of chrome wheels, after that the car is run into the ground like a farm truck and only gets the cheapest of cheap replacement parts, and only when it quits running... this is a perfect example of it, and I see a ton of them around here. I hate to say it this way, but it's like a low income status symbol... dumb use of money.

Nice fix Ivan. Love your quote, "because you gotta use the scope when you can." Looking over the comments, people sure do get riled up when a part on a BMW fails! Jeez. That plastic valve went 98kmi so that's not too bad really. Expensive, sure but there are probably alternatives. Eric O. would hit the junk yard as would I. People somehow think that BMW has found a way around the laws of physics and now only uses parts that never fail. lol

So, I have an 04 330i ZHP and it has misfires, but not to the point of shaking. Yesterday late afternoon was hot as crap and it just lost power and kept cutting off when I came to stops or slowed down. No smoke or obvious smells. Got it flatbedded to the shop but they’re saying the O2 Upstreams (?) and Plugs are causing the vehicle to behave like this. I just drove it home, no noticeable issues. Any takes on this?
@upallnight888
@upallnight888 8 жыл бұрын
That item is called the DISA Valve. You can try a cheap fix for the DISA seal the the intake manifold. Remove the DISA Valve and scrape the silicone seal on the DISA Valve and install an o-ring where the silicone seal use to be. Some people use a round o-ring other use a square cut o-ring. A 140 o-ring should work or a square cut o-ring can be brought at some store that sells paint ball guns. The smoke test show smoke coming at the DISA valve, but I would also look at the rubber bellow below the DISA Valve that connects the MAF to the throttle body and the Idle Air Control Valve. The small rubber bellow portion that connects to the IAC valve is usual torn and is a common vacuum leak. Everyone wants to be seen in a BM Trouble U but they are too cheap to actually buy quality parts for their BM Trouble U. These BMW has dropped in prices that kids flipping burgers at MCKie D can afford them, but they lack the skill and knowledge to fix them and the funds to buy quality replacement parts so they go on eBay or Amazon to buy made in China crap for 1/4 the cost of OEM parts.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 8 жыл бұрын
+Upallnight It looked like the smoke was coming from the internals of the valve, like a torn vacuum diaphragm or something. Are you sure it's just a sealing o-ring that goes bad?
@upallnight888
@upallnight888 8 жыл бұрын
+motoYam82 The other thing that goes wrong with the DISA Valve is the metal pin for the flap become loose or sometime actually falls out. If you don't catch it in time, the pin can end up in a cylinder, which will do a lot of bad thing to that cylinder. I owned a E34 5 series BMW prior to my current X5.. I am also on the xoutpost.com E53 forum posting under Upallnight. The vacuum leak on camera sound more like the rubber bellow vacuum leak on a IAC valve.
@upallnight888
@upallnight888 8 жыл бұрын
+Upallnight If the seal is good it should take some effort to remove the DISA Valve from the intake manifold. If it come out really easy, than the silicone seal is bad.You can also use a Ford Probe parts--- Fel-Pro brand and Advance Auto Part #35489 "91-94 ford probe gasket seal". It for a thermostat.

Ivan I have the same smoke machine I bought from ebay. However I used it once on a neon to try to find an evap leak and the thing exploded and started on fire lol. I'm afraid to use it now, but I feel like the regulator or something failed letting in too much psi. It blew the lid right off. Have you had that problem? What are your suggestions?
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 8 жыл бұрын
+Alex Schmidbauer I got rid of the stock regulator completely, and just use a manual external one with a dial. Also it's important to keep the right amount of baby oil in it. Also don't leave it hooked up too long or else it gets too toasty and at 6 amps it can drain your car battery pretty quick! Otherwise it's worked great!
@NewLevelAuto
@NewLevelAuto 8 жыл бұрын
+motoYam82 This should not be used for evap testing at all. An exposed heating element of unknown reliability in a tank back filled with fuel vapor and oxygen . It's why the larger machines all have a check valve in their machines now to prevent the back draft effects. I'm sure this is why you said the right amount of baby oil, but not everyone pays enough attention to the details. At least if nitrogen is used to keep the tank inert ?
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 8 жыл бұрын
I guess that is a concern...you could always add a check valve to the outlet hose if desired. As long as there is positive pressure in the smoke machine, back-drafting shouldn't be an issue...But yeah use at your own risk :)

I swapped coils swapped injectors but misfire stays at cyl 2 Fuel trims r at -28% both banks replaced the fuel filter w/fpr This car is killin me. +motoYam82 when i clear the codes and start it it seems to be smooth but then within 10 seconds i think it starts misfiring and it doesnt go away unless i clear the codes while the car is running(which makes the car run smoother for like 5-10 sec) i did the drop test like u did and unplugging cyl 2 coil doesnt do anything but like i said i have done the coil swap and injector swap no change. Has all new sparkplugs I do have the ccv/pcv deleted at the moment. It was broken i never put another one back on so all the vacuum ports r blocked off and valve cover venting to the atmosphere for now. Could that cause all the rich codes and misfire? Should i buy the actual bmw ccv valve and put it back on or jus get any pcv valve and put it on(i dont think that makes any difference since they both do same job) i have ordered the adapter for my bmw peake tool so i can plug it into the obd port for all I know i might not be gettin all the right codes with these generic one.

+motoYam82 so i did as suggested. Fuel trims were at -28% on both banks and when i unplugged the maf bank 1 went to 2.52% and bank 2 went to -1.65% so does that mean i need a new maf? Misfire is at idle only it gets better if i turn ac on or if i raise the rpm. Also the car ran alot better with maf unplugged. There wasnt any poppin out of the exhaust. I looked at misfire data and it has misfire at cyl 2& 5 i dont know if misfire it causing those fuel trims or fuel trims causing the misfire

+Markus Krause Right. At least price is a definite. OEM/Brand name doesn't always mean quality. Some of the OEM stuff is just re-branded crap from China these days. It's a crap shoot. And no I don't always buy the cheapest crap I can find.

The PCV is a known issue..They should be replaced quite regularly..and some BMW systems here will not work with aftermarket coils..Some have Bosch and some have Delfi...It appears that they are not compatible.."Broke the Man's Wallet" That's what I call BMW.

I had a good laugh at the BMW storage tray haha. And supposedly an OE coil is ~$72 each and the parts store special is ~$28 each. And the owner wonders why its running like crap. If the total bill from you and Absolute Auto Repair are greater than ~$450, not including the replacement of the actuator, then not being cheap would have saved the owner money instead. My thought is if you can afford to own an European car then you should have the money to fix it when it does break. I need another series to watch haha.

How did you make the smoker?
@Blazer02LS
@Blazer02LS 8 жыл бұрын
+Jason Argonauts They are real easy to make. look for youtube Brian B or search google for Paint can EVAP smoker. I've built a couple and they work fine for most testing. Basically it's a paint can, a few inches of 20 gauge Nichrome wire wrapped around some tiki torch wicks, a BBQ propane regulator (those are preset at a level lower than the EVAP damage level) and some wire and battery clips. You also need an air source. Parts are easy to find. Paint can and regulator came from true value, Nichrome or Kanthal wire from Ebay (I bought a 50 foot spool from TEMCo Industrial for $12.00) wire and binding posts for the first one came from radio shack. Second one I made my own posts. Short piece of 1/4" brake line for an air bar.2 fender washers to reinforce the top for the smoke outlet. And the most important item ---UNSCENTED--- baby oil..

Nice video Ivan ...that is a great lesson for those that think a Mercedes or a BMW would be great to own ..400%&^&**^$ for a part that .....controls a vacuum line?? WOW. I used to subscribe to a BMW motorcycle mechanics channel ( until he started getting lazy with ,,,not kidding here 30 second videos ) ,,anyway he used to say that BMW sometimes would use a part that was a known bad element for years..just so that down the line they could nail you for $$ more
@batchnerd
@batchnerd 8 жыл бұрын
+deepsquat600 It controls more than a vacuum line haha, It's actually for the variable length intake runners. The intake runners change shape to generate a beautiful flat torque curve. These types of cars are all the same great to drive, expensive to fix.

Usual problems with those , DISA valve , Coils, secondary air pump, secondary air flow sensor, PCV valve and all the hoses related to it (moisture freeze and craks) , valve cover gasket leaks , cooling fans (done twice) , burns oil like crazzy (i quart every thousand miles and BMW says is within normal specs) BMW's are money pits i do my own work in my vehicles and I hate my X5 , cant wait to get rid of it, honestly i am going back to my Asian vehicles , Done with German high maintenance cars (yes i have own a VW too , same story with that) but i like how german cars drive, thats my problem! , i like that stiff to the ground feel like!

+Jim Maas From what I heard the owner elected to just replace the bad coils and plastic actuator. That means he will continue to have misfire issues until all the junk coils are replaced with OEM coils, or at least decent aftermarket ones. A bit off topic, but my professor for Psychology 101 at Cornell University was the great "sleep expert" James Mass...might that be you? That was the most interesting course that I took at Cornell, even though my major was Engineering Physics (class of 2008) :)
