I had an E46 Alpina B3 3.3 saloon. An absolutely magnificent straight six bolted to an unreliable cost-engineered pile of junk (early E46s weren't very well made). Factory claimed 276bhp crank, mine made 272 at the wheels with the automatic gearbox. Suspension was sharp yet pliant. Loved it for the way it went, the noise it made, and the way it looked. Hated it for the amount of electrical gremlins and stupid breakages which cost a small fortune to keep it running. Best fault - the sunroof motor catching fire because a clip had fallen off in the sunroof tray, jammed the mechanism, and the motor had no resistance cut off. It just kept trying to move the thing until it overheated and caught fire.
@Diac132 ай бұрын
The E46 is one of the most reliable bmw's ever build. That's why there are still so many on the road. Your description is definitely wrong. Reliable as hell if maintained. Engine and Chassis.
@duncanhamilton58412 ай бұрын
@@Diac13 I understand you want to defend the E46, but I can't be wrong about a car I owned and spent a lot of money on repairing things that shouldn't have broken. I came out of a late E36 328i, which really was built properly - no problems in that thing in twice the mileage I did with the E46. The B3 was a '99 car, so early on in E46 production. Sold it in 2008 so from distant memory now, and ignoring the usual BMW thing of eating its own suspension bushes all the time. - Sunroof jam and fire as above. - Instrument cluster failure (twice) - wiper motor failure - window regulator failure x2 - numerous small sensor failures on the body - underbody exhaust heat shield fell off - Aux betl tensioner fail 6 weeks after a full service (which AD denied was their problem as service bulletin didn't include Alpinas... that one really did leave a bad taste as it destroyed rad, condensor, and other bits when it went). Threre's probably more Ive forgotten, but al that in 30k miles on what was then a 6 year old car is not reliable. Like Mercedes of the same period, the build quality had gone in favour of profits. Compare the E36 and E46 and you get the same sense of cost cutting as you do with the 190E and C-Class (which I've also owned). Sorry mate, but the early E46 was not good in my lived, very expensive experience.
@Diac132 ай бұрын
@@duncanhamilton5841 One outlier doesn't make or break a car. In general it is a reliable car and you still see plenty of them today. Those are the facts. You don't see unreliable cars on the road over 20 years old, that's not how it works. You can easily do a quick google search btw.
@duncanhamilton58412 ай бұрын
@@Diac13 Just because something is still around doesn't make it reliable... otherwise there would be no Alfas, Fiats, or Lancias left. I would say a bigger reason they're still around is because they don't really rust like say a C-Class of the era.
