Everyone with a grain of salt knew it was bound to happen. Who the fuck binds their steering wheel to some wires and some electrical signal, it's madness. Unnecessary worry. The electronic power steering used by BMW is always connected by a rod. It is not shift-by-wire, where there is no rod between the steering wheel and the steering mechanism. What Misha experienced was aquaplaning, which manifests similarly to the steering wheel being disconnected from the wheels. If the EPS fails, it only makes the steering wheel harder to turn because the motor does not assist in turning the wheels. However, the difference is not so noticeable while driving. EPS, like hydraulic power steering, simply facilitates steering. But the steering wheel is always connected to the steering mechanism. Shift-by-wire does not involve a connection between the steering wheel and the steering mechanism. However, BMW has never used this type of steering in any of its.

At 4:40 you can see that the redline starts to slowly drop from 8000 to 1000 rpm. The exact same thing happens at 10:20, just watch the thin red segments that start to descend to 1k. Just before he says drivetrain issue. There is also a yellow zone that starts to appear bellow the rev "needle" on the display in both cases. The older BMWs had LEDs on the rev meter to reduce the redline when the engine was cold, and the redline got higher as the engine temp got closer to optimum. This seems to be the digital version of the same thing, so maybe some sensor failures are causing it to limit the revs to 1000...

The G80 has a mechanical steering with electrical power assist (EPS) It can't be disconnected unless there is a major mechanical breakage. Now the brake pedal is brake by wire with a mechanical redundancy system to the braking circuit as a safety :P

Good enough idea for the person in the Cybertruck. Not a good idea for the person in the other car.

And yet if you flew in any passenger Airbus within the last 3 decades then you should know the plane had fly by wire technology. If this can work safely in a plane then I wouldn't worry about cars that much.

Some mechanics are right when they say buy a car with the fewest electronics. As for german reliability, it has probably gone on a long excursion in recent years.

Unpopular opinion here, as a car mechanic. German quality wasn’t very good to begin with. ESPECIALLY with BMW. There were a few “more than okay” models but that was the best they could

5:37 Looks like a huge puddle down there in Fuchsröhre. So maybe the car wasn't turning at 5:40 because of aquaplaning or there was a problem with the power steering / assistance. For sure, the steering can't disconnect on this BMW. Furthermore, it's a redundant system which is at least doubly secured

This is a little known fact - BMW uses blinker fluid for steering as well, if the owner uses their indicators too much, it depletes the blinker fluid and steering doesn't work anymore. Therefore it is is not recommended to use blinkers that much in a BMW.

My guess is since this is an Xdrive car, the front wheels were hydroplaning giving the illusion of no steering. My WRX with worn PSS with any power to the front axle in a very wet condition acted this way.

The only thing that is logical in this situation is because of the heavy rain some water finds it's way to the steering electrical connection or some wire has loos pin..something along these lines. But still, it has to be looked after ASAP

The steering never "disconnected", considering its literally impossible for it to do so. The M3 has electric power steering, not steer-by-wire. All that means is that the power steering is powered by an electric motor, rathe than a hydraulic pump. That means there is still always a permanent mechanical connection to the front wheels.

Gotta ask if someone knows... is the new m3 steering to stering rack still "attached" whit a cardano connection like "normal old" steering wheels or is steer by wire? Cause seriusly, steer by wire on a fast car is dumb... no control over the wheels if the computer goes bonkers...
