Firstly Miss Red is now doing well.
Miss Red was not herself yesterday and by the afternoon it was apparent that something was quite seriously wrong with her.
We rushed her to our local emergency animal hospital yesterday afternoon and this morning she was diagnosed with a genetic autoimmune disease. It’s not common but isn’t contagious or something she has caught herself. We’re simply thankful she got to hospital when she did because we were told she would not have survived if gone untreated.
She’s now getting the treatment she needs, and is going to be fine, but will likely need medication for life.
Shadow (Miss Red’s Mum), who was left to starve and die tied to a bathroom pipe had a litter of 9, which particularly has not had a very healthy outcome. Two puppies didn’t survive birth, one has a neurological issue and now one has an autoimmune disease.
It brings about a bigger issue and It’s really hard not to bring it up, seeing as we’re literally engrossed in it with all the puppies in our care at the moment. The issue is backyard breeding, desexing/neutering and ‘accidental’ litters. Over the last 5 months we’ve cared for 39 puppies directly from backyard breeding and dogs not being desexed. And this is just one small rural region for just ONE rescue organisation; Central Coast Animal Care Facility.
Is it just us, or does that not sound shocking? One rescue! We were told by the rescue that number is on average 150 puppies a year! For just one rescue!
Just last week, a local group page in our valley had a resident post an advertisement for a litter of puppies. The post used words like ‘I’m helping a friend’ ‘find forever homes’. Not the words ‘selling’ or ‘for sale’ or a cost etc. Simply DM the person for details. Initially we thought the best of the person and contacted them referring them to the rescue organisation to help her find ‘forever homes’. But the reply came quickly that no they were selling them, and not trying to find them homes the right way.
So it got us thinking, many of us probably see these posts often on Facebook in groups that we’re in. Local groups like this one, maybe dog or breed groups. But what is actually the law on these posts? The law in the state that we live in, which is NSW, Australia, is that you cannot advertise the sale of, or give away a dog unless you list one of the following registration numbers. You need to either list a registered breeder number, a microchip for every puppy in the litter or a rescue organisation identification number. What are the rules on Facebook? It is forbidden entirely to sell an animal on Facebook and it’s also forbidden to put up for adoption or rehome an animal, unless you are a registered rescue organisation. That pretty much means no one other than registered rescues can post an advertisement selling or giving away puppies on Facebook, and that’s internationally.
Social media posts are how these animals are most often being sold and continue the problem, but what can we do? Firstly, don’t buy a dog/puppy/animal online unless it is a rescue organisation or registered breeder. If you see an advertisement that doesn’t have the right information report it. If it’s in a group page, you can let the admin know that it’s not allowed. Facebook does close down groups for allowing these posts, often without warning, so by letting your admin know about it, is helping your group community do the right thing, but it’s also protecting it from being deleted by Facebook.
In our state of NSW you can report the person and post personally to the Animal Welfare League NSW who investigate and fine individuals up to $5,500 for such a post. Here’s the link to report such posts in NSW:
www.awlnsw.com...
If you are in another state in Australia or another country, and know the law regarding this issue, please feel free to share it in the comments for others to be aware of.
We don’t like to ask for anything. We usually just like to share dogs having a great time. But this has grown quite close to our hearts and we feel like this might be something our dog loving community might be interested in and willing to look out for when they see it whilst scrolling.
We don’t have a massive following but it’s almost 400k across our socials, and we know you’re all very passionate about dogs and their welfare, so maybe together we can do our little bit in fighting this very big international issue.
And support the rescues. This is surely the big lesson we have learned doing all this … our hard working, animal loving, kind hearted, selfless rescues are overloaded, under supported and downright struggling every day with the responsibilities of our local areas.
Thank you for watching our video, for reading this post if you did. And thank you for looking out for these posts. And thank you for supporting your local rescues, however you do. I know there’s a lot of volunteers and supporters on here for rescues. THANK YOU!

Oh poor Miss Red. I had a rescue dog with an serious autoimmune condition. She did well with medication for many years, but it did mean the vet and I got to see quite a bit of each other. I don’t regret a thing. She was the sweetest, gentlest, and friendliest dog in the world. Sending you best wishes for a good outcome for her.

I had a bichon with serious autoimmune issues later in life. Anti-cancer meds were used for at least a year. She made a good recovery and it was worth the effort. It did affect her as she aged further but she put up the good fight and lived to be 13. Her name was Zoie and she was a beautiful Tom boy!

Thank you for letting us know how about Miss Red. Please God the medication will work for her. She is a great dog and deserves every chance. I have two sick Goldie's, bought from a so called registered breeder. Spoke to her and let her know the dogs were sick. She took out the word registered in her advertisement and continued to sell the puppies and did so with later litters. My two dogs were desexed to stop the OCD in our line, it kills me to think how many sick puppies have come from that breeding pair. No laws here to stop it. My boys are on medication all their lives( 11years) . I'm right there with you that the laws have to change . People here are begining to step up and fight for new laws to be introduced to protect animals. You are very kind people Miss Red and all the other Dog's are so fortunate to have you at their back. Love from Dublin

I've not long finished paying my vet bill for my senior dog. She had a stroke around 6-7 months ago. I had to take her to the emergency vet because it happened in the middle of the night. Their first suggestion was euthanise ... especially when they discovered I was only on a student payment. I had them give her something to help her be pain free and sleep the night and took her home. The next day I took her into the Animal Welfare League who gave me a payment plan. They too suggested euthanise but overnight I had researched strokes in dogs and discovered that 70% fully recover. I decided that I would wait and see if she would recover ... we will be leaving for dog park together after I finish dinner. I am considerably poorer and she is 100% recovered.

There are so many dogs, cats, birds, and small animals overcrowding the shelters and rescues. Not only do we need to crack down on backyard breeding, but also need to get stores to stop selling pets, which encourages more backyard breeding. This is a worldwide problem and it's horrible. Thank you for using your platform to bring more attention to this problem.

So sad for Miss Red and the whole abuse of Shadow. Poor nutrition and lack of medical care while pregnant took a toll on Shadow's pups. Thankfully where I live we have a low cost spay and neuter program. Wonderful program to donate to whenever possible. Adopt, not shop. If you are looking for breed specific, always and only from a reputable breeder.

Vet Bill's in the US are crazy high. I remember getting my "quote" from the after-hours vet, as my black Lab had Pancreatitis. I knew I couldn't afford rent and this bill. I walked her near the vet's office, deciding that homeless with doggo was better than a home, having chosen to not treat her. Fortunately, I was able to do both. I think that vet care is needed, but the costs much come down, as more people are unable to keep their pets alive; just cannot. Sad state of affairs, and hoping for change. Best to Ms. Red!

I’m praying for Y’all, Miss Red and Miss Violet. Puppy Mills are awful, because they don’t care for these little Angel Dogs. Also, some Veterinarians get a little insensitive about some puppies and dogs. Some people are so devious. They are greedy and manipulative. I’m glad that you found out what they are doing is illegal. Hang in there and don’t let it get you down with all of the people that turned on you. You have right on your side and those of us stand with You, where ever we may be. You give these puppies love as well as your Daycare Babies. You have so much love that we as your followers feel the love for all those that You care for. That also includes all of your helpers and especially your Children. Good for you not giving up on Miss. Violet or Miss. Red. We had a golden retriever with what was first thought just contact dermititis but ended up being an autoimmune disease he lived to be 10 with just some skin problems but then his quality of life was gone and we lost him. He was the best dog and so smart he saved my son one day when he got stuck in a barb wire fence walking back from his friends in the snow. He went to my husband and kept grabbing his leg and pulling after the third time he followed our dog and found my son stuck in the barb wire between the back yards. My son was fine just scared and cold but our Gage saved the day. He was well worth the cost and time of his disease.

Yes, in America too. There must be about 100 rescue organizations in the eastern part of the US that specialize in moving dogs and cats from the southern states to the urban and northern states to find them homes.it isn't just breeders. There are fewer vets in rural areas where having pets fixed is not always common practice. Much of the public has come to understand that pets bought from pet stores are from BY breeders and can be very sick.

May those that have adequate finances help fund the care of these foster dogs. Only started having dogs in my 40's so wanted to experience the puppy stages. All of our dogs have been purebreds and we have always had them fixed at the appropriate age. All of our girls were the runts of the litters and usually the last to go. Our first was born with a health issue that was taken care of surgically and she was delightful so we wanted another dog. Two at a time has been our limit. We do have one that was a rescue dog and she is wonderful. We did look at other older dogs, but many came with too much baggage that we didn't have the time or training to handle. They are all magnificent creatures that desire the best lives we can give them. Sam, you and Luke keep spreading the word. You are doing incredible work and it's truly your purpose! We can't thank you enough for all that you do.

So very sorry🥲 pray all will turn out ok. You have taken on so much, out of love for these pups. Can feel your concern and frustration over people that don’t care about animals and so often cause so many issues with all this illegal breeding. Your subscribers care about what you are doing there. 💛

Thank you Luke for that, bless Miss Red and hope she comes home and gets better, bless....In England we have problems of dog stealing, it is so sad, anything for money, some are sold if they can get the right breed for £1,000 of Pounds, I feel more should be done., but the problem is so big.

Here in SA the fear with dog stealing often is dog fighting - either for fighting itself, or as ‘bait’ 😡. Luke says that the speculation ( I’m not sure if they’ve since confirmed this) about Shadow’s background is that she was headed for this disgusting and exploitative ‘business’. However, BYB is just as abominable because the poor dogs are just commodities or objects to these people.

I'm not sure about Australia but in New Zealand some of the breeders are selling pups who end up with major health issues. They sell them for huge money, people buy them in good faith and do love the pups but just can't afford ongoing vet bills. Very tough for some families. You guys are doing a fantastic job with all of the puppy's. Love your channel.

In the UK we have a huge number of backyard breeders cashing in on the manic desire for a puppy during lockdown. We also have a lot of puppies smuggled into the UK from eastern Europe and Ireland - usually all taken from their mothers far too soon, with Parvo, etc. Dog theft has increased, too, with a pedigree dog / puppy making far more money than a standard drug deal!

@@pyramidpete I'm also in UK Sarah. We have pretty good legislation in this country ....not perfect but better than many other places. People here need to be educated. Not all, I know, but most people are not cruel by nature and many would think twice about what they were doing if they were aware of what goes on with these puppy farms and ruthless backyard breeders. I had a pet stolen over forty years ago and I have never ever forgotten about it ....it's the absolute worse knowing what has likely to be happening. It causes me to grieve even now. There are many atrocities and children, in particular, need to be shielded but until people are allowed to learn then it will continue to be an uphill battle.

LuKe and Sam I’m so sorry. It’s heartbreaking to see miss red sick. Thank you for getting her help. I’m my own life I stopped counting after 10 grand with one of our beagles back in mid 90’s. My husband and I are middle class, so many people told us to put him down. No way in gods green earth would we, I would have paid any amount to save him. He lived to be almost 9. I have never regretted the financial decision we made to save him. It took us three more years to be able to buy a home. I could have cared less about waiting for our home! It’s shocking to see how many dogs come from backyard breeders! The laws need to be tougher. It’s appalling how these animals are used! Sending you all love prayers. It’s difficult to stay strong and positive when facing this side of rescue. Remember to care for yourself as well. I know from experience how it can affect your health. You are incredible people to do this!

These are the hard things you never see in rescues. A lot of decisions have to be made, hard ones. Everything always has to be weighed out. Its so emotional. Most rescues do not have the resources, money wise. Rescuing animals is one of the most rewarding and heartbreaking un-paid jobs. Rescue workers carry a lot of burden on their wings. Dee is the front line, she finds these dogs, she see's a lot., trust me. I am praying for Shadow, the puppies and for those making these decisions on a daily basis.

Thank you so much for drawing attention to this very serious backyard breeding issue! I live in Southern California, and I have only ever had escue dogs, and I support our local animal shelter. I know it's a small effort on my part, but so many animals need homes due to not desexing, unscrupulous breeding, etc. I hope Miss Red continues to be well with medication!
