I worked with kids at a Korean company recently, and even the middle schoolers were trading dieting tips, calling themselves (not necessarily each other) fat, and saying they were going to go on diets consisting of only eating one apple per meal. One kid even told me her own MOM supported this apple diet, while her dad was against it. It was seriously messed up.

The way these idols talk about dieting is exactly how the children talk about it. That's not to say there isn't a pronounced issue with eating disorders in American youth, but just that it definitely seems to be on a whole another level in Asia.

I'll never forget when Kyuhyun called Goohara a w*ore as a 'joke' on air and the hosts said SHE overracted by crying. It’s only been a few months since i’ve started watching kdramas so i wasn’t familiar with korean actors and actresses (or idols) but after watching While you were sleeping and uncontrollably fond (i LOVED them btw) i really started liking Suzy but i saw a lot of people hating on her for various reasons. I didn’t understand the hate she got and after watching this video and seeing how much shit she had to go through i understand it even less ! She offically has my respect. I’ve seen a lot of people saying she was overrated and that she didn’t deserve her fame but actually there is only one things she didn’t deserve and that is exactly what we see in this video. The unecessary critism she got at SUCH a young age for something as ridiculous as her weight. Why would anyone ever spend so much time worrying about something that doesn’t even affect their own life??? It’s her body and she always seemed healthy. I might try that, I've already gotten a few requests. I guess I've just been hesitant because it will be different trying to cultivate a story for them. Kpop fancams and candid photos make storytelling more linear and they get so many interviews. American celebs are much more hush-hush and our paparazzi photos are just plain out ugly and make celebrities bodys look warped and disfigured on red carpets. So it's harder to draw and honest comparison for photos that don't depict reality in the 1st place

Although to be completely honest their are a few American celebs I absolutely can not stand and I don't think I could sit through hours of making a dedicated video for them. It's so much easier to be unbiased with Kpop because I'm just not that into it. But I grew up with western celebs and have pretty strong opinions on some and it would likely hinder my view of storytelling XD

I respect this woman a lot. Although ED's are not a choice and idols are constantly being bombarded by criticism, I don't like at all their "diet talks" and open self body shaming at all. In the end, by calling themselves whales while having a normal weight and over sharing extreme weight-loss tips, they're only spreading the toxicity more. But Suzy made the wise thing to just not share unnecessary and potentially risky information and stay low in that topic. Even when she spoke, she would say something along the lines of "people criticized me for my weight a lot and I felt very self-conscious" instead of "I was a fatty, so people criticized me a lot". Just a slight change of words can make a message be totally different

It was so obvious that she was uncomfortable especially in this clip(10:39), but the girl still continued on her criticism about her diet and stuff, obviously making fun of suzy's habits just to get other people's attention.

suzy is my ultimate bias and i knew she went through a hard time which made her even stronger but i never knew it was to think extent. i think It's very cruel idk how else to put it but being that young in the public eye under so much stress probably made it even harder. It's a shame grown men and people decided to pick on her for something she couldn't entirely control. losing weight isn't easy and keeping it off is even harder and for her i think most of it was baby fat they didn't even let her grow into her true self. i grow to love her even more now shes seriously so strong, talented and hard working.

If you are overweight, the body can make the set point higher (because in the past, holding on to weight was essential to survival) which is why weight loss is difficult after years of being overweight. But when youre underweight, this effect is even stronger. The body will fight you by giving you hunger signals and holding on to calories until you’re back at your natural set point. Making these kpop idols go to bmis of 15-19 when the natural bmi might be 23 is very damaging in the long run.
