How to properly select a pet Guinea Pig

Everyone on here saying not to purchase from a pet store, you're being a little ridiculous. Let's face it, these shops are never going to go out of business. And what happens to the poor pigs who ended up in there by no fault of their own if no one wants to buy them? Is it helping them out to sit in there and never go to a good home? No. Not really. So stop shoving the adopt don't shop motto on people and making them feel bad for purchasing an animal. Would you rather it died in a loving home or the confines of it's cage in a pet shop? Not everyone can adopt. I've been searching for adoptable guinea pigs in my area for weeks but I live 7.5 hours away from the closest rescue with available pigs so I'm going to have to buy even though I would really rather adopt. AND THAT'S OK TOO. Getting pigs from a pet shop can be considered rescuing as well in my opinion. It's all about your perspective. So mind your own business and quit trolling! Whether bought or adopted, every pig needs a good home.

The only reason they say get from a shelter beacusee shelter need more help then pet stores and pet stores mix up there guinea pig gender alot so you could think you go home 2 males but go with 2 females and the piggies can also be pregnet due to that there not saying you have to but it is reccomeded

+Jocelynn Lino I agree SOME mess up genders but not all do near my house there is a Petco that opened not to long ago and they are caring people they like to take care of there guinea pigs all of them were healthy and really happy and so sweet but if you get one that's a girl instead of a boy oh well love them anyway and if they're in bad health nurse them back to being healthy

I just want to say, when we went to the pound fourteen years ago we wanted a dog... The one we chose was very sick. We knew when we took her in. Of course, this wasn't the animal shelters fault, if anything, they saved her by taking her off the street (possible abusive first owner). We took her home, helped her get her health back, and she's been the best dog ever since.

I recently adopted a guinea pig around a month ago. I had been wanting one for a little over five years and finally now that I am older and have money my dad allowed me to adopt one. I had to go to 5 different Petcos and Petsmart's until I finally found the perfect one. She was the only one that was brown and she had brown eyes. I noticed she was really standoffish and was hiding in a corner but she didn't have any crust around her eyes or nasal discharge so I wasn't too worried about it. I brought her home and gave her some space the first 2 days and slowly started introducing myself and handling her the 3-5th days. Immediately she wouldn't eat her vitamin c so I took her into the vet because I had tried the vitamin c pellets, yogurt drops, water drops, and fresh oranges. The vet gave her a vitamin c injection and recommended kale. Then discharge started appearing a week later in her nose and she was sneezing. I had to take her to the vet again and get her antibiotics. She is now completely sick free and healthy! I was bummed at first I got a sick pig cause I got so attached to her and didn't want anything to happen to her. Now I feel blessed because you never know if someone will take care of the pig when they become sick. I'm glad I get to take care of my pig and make her happy. :) Her name is Kaia.

Of course you can! You don't need anybody's permission but yours(or your parents) to me, getting a Guinea pig from a petstore is the same as rescuing them because face it, these stores will never go out of business! So I'd say it's just fine.

+Khan the king at my local Petco they have about 3 that are out in the store but they might have people in the back that clean up the cages and you don't have to take them to the vet right away you need to check them out first if you think that they're sick then go to the vet

A good rescue shelter I like to adopt from is called wee companions they have guinea pigs, hamsters, bunnies, mice, and rats they have a lot of locations and they also sell toys and hay and bedding and all sorts of things like that

you can get them from any local pet store but i suggest you get them from a humane society like a shelter. you can get a cage from a pet store but those tend to be too small, i also suggest a CC cage. you can make it or buy one pre made online

I would also check the body over just for any lumps or something, because I have had a guinea pig I've checked over and it has had a lump on it's side. I told the pet store employees and they took the guinea pig, and I guess they took it to the vets that are located in the store. :)x

Give them vegetables that have vitamin C in it. Like pepper or very small amount of tomato. If you think their food isn't good, go look in a store and read the ingredients in the back of the package. It lists how much vitamins are in it. There are guinea pig foods with high Vitamin C in it, you're looking for around 750 mgs or higher. Transitioning from one food to another shouldn't be a problem. Also you shouldn't worry about the amount of Vitamin C, you can't really overdose it. If they get too much, it just goes to waste but it doesn't hurt them.

I'm late but I can maybe still be helpful lol go to a medicine section in your local store that has vitamins and stuff and look for liquid vitamin c. If it's safe for kids than itll be safe for piggies lol. Get a syringe and give each of your piggies some each morning. Dont put it in their water. They wont get enough vitamin c that way. I would not recommend feeding green beans because in the wrong dosis they can be poisonous for guinea pigs (I have a lot of links but the websites are in german so I don't think this would help). I mean, you can do whatever you want - but I just thought it could be interesting because obviously you love your guinea pigs :)

I have had my guinea pigs for now (today) exactly a year. Recently over the past few months one of them has become hostile to the other. He is attacking it and also dominating it even thought they have been together for a year. They are both boys and both came out of the same cage at the pet store. I have them separated and it is quite expensive for a check up at the pet store. I found a scab bump looking thing on his body. The worker said it could be an ear infection or something intestinal?!!

I go to pets at home and Guinea pigs there are in rlly big cages made of wood with plexiglass. I have been to another pet store called in2pets. Although it's rlly far from my home, I went to look at the piggies and they were living in small cages with only a tunnel (which was made out of a pipe ) and a bowl of food. I decided to look at the water and the bottle was SOOOOO dirty that the water looked yellow. I was so sad but now I know not to buy my Guinea pigs from there😢😭😭😪

My pigs tend use the litter box some but they also poop elsewhere, however it still helps to have the litter pan. (i usually make my videos after their cages have been cleaned). check out my video on how to litter train :)

Yes, you should... it is better to have at least two guinea pigs, because they are very social and need a constant companion to cuddle with. I advise you get another female piggie. You want to introduce them slowly, to make sure they are good with other guinea pigs. However, if one of your piggies is aggressive with the other, you have to be prepared to take care of them separately or have another home for it to go to. It is always a good idea to try, though. I hope my comment helped a little. :)

You should but I advice if you do and where you're getting it from allows you to take them with you and inside bring your guinea pig and have the two meet and make sure your guinea pig is comfortable with the other I have 5 now cause my first two had babies but one of them is really sweet and he's the dad and the other one is a little more aggressive but the dad doesn't care he still loves her but make sure they're comfortable

DON'T buy guinea pigs from those places. They're not taken care of, stuffed in small cages then given to you in a tiny box when they're terrified. i don’t know what genders to get. i want a more interactive pig and males are usually more interactive. but i obvi want 2 or more. if i get two boys they might fight and also if i get another pig later on they might fight with it if it’s a male or they might fight over it if it’s a female. if it’s two girls they won’t be as interactive but they won’t smell as much and later on i can get more girls and one boy. i really would like one boy and one girl that way it’s a good mix but then if i get more it would have to be girls because the boys would fight over one girl and if i get more girls first the boys still might fight with each other. is having two boys out of the question? is it best to have all girls? i just don’t know what to do

I've been doing research all day I was wondering what kind of water do I give the guinea pig? I DONT want to use sink water because I stay in apts & lets say its not clean water. can I buy gallon of water if so what kind? how many times a week can I feed it carrots & greens? is hay also good for guinea pigs?

hi misscavyqueen i am going to be getting 2 more guinea pigs soon and we dont have any rescues or shelters close to us and my mom doesnt want to drive for more than one hour, would you think it would be okay to get them from a pet store that has well taken care of guinea pigs? (as they look to be and so does the home) can you reply and soon as possible thanks:) love the video by the way!

I actually want to get a guinea pig at Petsmart, and I am veru excited getting everything ready, does Petsmart let the buyer handle the guinea pig or do they let the buyer actually hold it?
