Some of my fellow cruisers thought I was a little too worried when I told them that I was going to plan on being back on board two hours before the deadline. It was my first cruise and I didn't want to get caught up in being late due to the time zone change, traffic, being tired from all the walking I planned to do, or something else. As it was I got back on board only 1.5 hours ahead of the deadline. The streets, shops, and museum were so crowded I cut short everything I had planned to do and I still missed the deadline I had set for myself. The last long walk to the ship is the one that seems to take forever after walking around all day. You really need to significantly lower your expectations of the amount of activities you can do within the time allowed at a crowded cruise stop.

For anyone going for their first cruise: Ship's Time. You should get to know the concept of "ship's time" When you board the ship, the cruise director will come over the intercom and tell everyone to set their watches to ship's time. When you are on the sea, ship's time doesn't change when you cross time zones. Your watch or cell phone clock will likely change automatically to keep you in sync with the actual time ashore. This will get new cruisers in trouble. This causes people to return late because their cell clock says that, for example, is 2:30 when it's actually 3:30 ship's time. You'll get back just in time to see the ship sail away.
@dogsareme100 Жыл бұрын
Actually whether ship time and local time are the same depends on the captain last cruise I went on he had us change time zones to match local time, but on the other cruises ship time has always been local time from Fla ( where we left from.)

They then pile everyone into a stretched golf cart and make a beeline for the dock. Another passenger showed what happens when stuck in traffic and the excursion was done through the ship's agency: they sent a bus to search for everyone and drove them back to the dock. Again, this is ONLY if the passenger booked the shore excursion through the ship's onboard office, not a third party.

You can also fly back to the port, in our case, Galveston. You do not get a discount. The cruise cannot hold up 5,000 guests because you came back late. The truth is, we went and explored at each port and came back in plenty of time. You shouldn't have any issues. As for what to wear? Comfortable beach type clothes -- shorts, tennis shoes, sandals, watershoes, sunglasses, t-shirts, button-up short sleeve shirts, etc. At dinner, we wore dressy business casual type clothes. My wife wore nice dresses (not formal) and I wore dockers or slacks, dress shoes and nice, short-sleeve shirts mean to be left untucked -- just no jeans or t-shirts at dinner (in the dining room) You can eat buffet all day and all night and never change out of shorts and flip-flops. Everything is included, meals, etc., except soda and alcohol drinks. I bought a Bottomless Bubbles package for $48 that gave me soda at no extra charge for the entire week. Oh, take a camera and an attitude geared towards having fun. Also, don't use cell or internet. They are quite expensive. Take a week off. You'll be surprised at how recharged you are when you get back.

+JustHuntVids Just to add...it has less to do with holding up 5000 or so passengers as it does that the cruise line pays for a designated docking time in each port (pays big extra if they delay departing for any other reason than mechanical or medical), and travel time to the next port where again, they have specified docking time. They also have to take weather and currents into consideration when cruising to the next port. Just my 2 cents ;)

+Timothy Hickey - Great point, Timothy! I've heard the same and am certain it's true that the porting costs are even more of a factor than making people wait. UNLESS the REASON you are late is beyond your control--like the case I know of in Alaska where they encouraged as part of their schedule people to take a small train trip--and the train derailed. You really can't lecture those people about "not being late" when it had nothing to do with them overstaying some trip or other. In that case the cruise line, or train line, must either wait, or, pay to transport the passengers back to the ship. There really are two sides--at times.
@caseyvee44197 жыл бұрын
Under that VERY limited circumstance, I agree. But I suspect that applies about 1% of the time. When I make my plans for return to the ship for example if I am taking a taxi, I allow enough time for a SECOND taxi if the first one should break down in transit. 99% of people missing a ship or plane either start too late, are the "one more beer" type, OR the "they won't leave without us" type. I have seen those last ones in airports: "Flight time was supposed to be 5:00!! It is only 5:10, how can they not take us?" Well, boarding time was 4:20 idiot, and they actually allowed people to board until 4:55, plus they called your name about 15 times. Freakin plane FLIES at 5:00, or pushes away from the gate, at least.
@roachtoasties7 жыл бұрын
If the train derailed, the cruise line would obviously know and also know that a bunch of passengers have not reboarded as they were not scanned back in. The cruise line would probably wait for those passengers. If you're late because you were futzing around and lost track of time, then tough luck. In this case, it was a single family. I've never been to Cozumel, but I doubt there is a train system.

I often wondered if there's another boat in port that's heading to the exact port that the boat they missed is going to? Yes, once the lines are "cast off" you are not going to be able to get back onboard, probably even if the ship hasn't moved a single metre away from the pier. I know for a fact that Royal Caribbean will wait a little while for passengers. I have heard them make calls and calls looking for missing passengers. And in the past I road Carnival and yes, they leave passengers on the peer.

My rule of thumb is to be back on the ship one hour before the official 'all aboard' time.
@frankreese67765 жыл бұрын
That's a good rule

Great advice. I wouldn't push my luck. I'll be IN LINE at least half an hour before they call "all aboard!"

Are ship departures secret or something? There's so many videos of people missing their ship.

They also could pay for a port authority to take them to the ship on a boat. I had people from my group pay to be taken to the ship that pulled away last year in Grand Cayman. The ship waits 45 minutes after the announced time before pulling the last ropes. People go to the bars (Carlos and Charlie’s, Senior Frogs) and lose track of time. Happens more times than you think.

We ( the group) i was with head up the ship for 45 mins haha we got a standing ovation ( several 100s of ppke on the decks) when we finilly made it back

There was a required harbor pilot on board that liner to navigate it out. At some point, a small vessel would retrieve him from the liner. They could have arranged to bring the stragglers out at the same time. With a severe penalty of course...

We watched people running to the ship on our last cruise this past January & almost got left. Now I understand that 'things happen' &/or if it's a situation where an excursion booked through that cruise-line is running late for whatever reason but otherwise, on a cruise ship, where it's effecting how many other people not to mention the ships timeline to get into the next port(s) on time... You just don't do that. It's just rude, it's disrespectful & you're basically saying to not just the other passengers but also the crew that 'my time is more important than yours'.

Worked on cruise ships as chief purser, passports are unloaded with the ship agent an assistance given to next port of call, or home. Either way, at the cost if the passenger.

How late were they? Both times I cruised to Cozumel on Carnival we left an hour and a half to 2 hours later then scheduled due to waiting for fellow passengers to come back. So for them to leave they really must have been late.

been on 9 cruises AND NOT ONCE HAVE I EVER GOTTEN REMOTELY CLOSE TO BEING REMOTELY CLOSE TO MISSING THE SHIP when it leaves port. If you dont go on an excursion thru the ship then YOU MUST be sure to get back early.

Always leave more than enough time to get back to your boat. Cruise ships leave on the dot to the second.

They can't dock again because it's expensive and complicated and there isn't time. But they can stop at sea quite easily, lower their dock, and recover you that way. Hire a water taxi and chase the ship! Keep in mind that cruise ships are very fast, and not required to stop, it's completely up to the captain.
@walkmichigan22576 жыл бұрын
Most ships will wait a short while for someone, regardless of who they booked their excursion through. Note, I said "short while". I've seen people running for the ship and they waited for them. Depending on the specific situations as far as the port they are in, cruise ships definitely don't want to leave people behind. In their eyes, those are dollars running down the dock. They can't wait forever though. BE ON TIME.

When we go on a cruise, we always book our excursions through the cruise excursion desk. It cost a little more but it is safer and you have that piece of mind. These people who missed the boat try to safe a couple of bucks but now they have to fork out $400 to fly to the next destination to catch the boat. The stress and basically ruining their vacation just to safe a couple of bucks. Don't be a cheapskate. Pay the extra dollars and enjoy your vacation. And make sure you carry your passport with you at all times.

Hey, if they tell you the ship is pulling out at 6:47pm, that doesn't mean 7:00pm. It pulls out at 6:47pm. Lesson learned for them. Grab a flight (if you can get one) to the next port or go home. I was on a cruise in 2005 and the same thing happened to a couple. They had to catch a flight to the next island.

After 9 cruises. I am always back at least 1 hour before the ship sails, if it is a tender port , at least the third last tender, don’t risk it, always book longer tours with the cruise line, if the ship sails without the tour group it’s their fault, they must arrange the airfare and costs. On my first cruise the ship waited 3 hours for a bus of passengers only because they booked through the company, otherwise we would have gone. Long story short don’t push your luck.

That so many people are willing to make comments without knowing the full circumstances amazes me. Makes me wonder who is more dumb the family who were late or those who make negative comments when not aware of the circumstances just assumption without basis. I have been in a similar situation when going to airport my taxi ran out of fuel in middle of busy freeway. Replacement cab took long time to arrive as traffic had banked up behind us. Then replacement cab decided to take a shortcut but went through a red light hitting another car. Police arrived and i explained my predicament and they said that i was a required witness as one of the occupants of the other vehicle had been hurt badly. My predicament was irrelevant to them and i missed my overseas flight to London. Fortunately i was able to catch another flight the following day. Ships like aircraft wait for no one unless safety issues are present but a late arriving passenger may not be entirely at fault. Always amazes me how people will defend the accused of the most horrendous crimes as being innocent until proved guilty, yet so eager to crucify this family in such derogatory manner without any knowledge at all about their circumstances. So who are the dumber ones here i ask.
@E3ECO5 жыл бұрын
I've noticed the same thing. While I enjoy watching these videos and am inclined to think badly of the late passengers, I know better than to display my nastiness online. It's always possible they ran into some unknown problem that held them up, especially if they had kids with them.

My question is, can you take the next cruise or at least get a partial refund?. I'm just curious because I never been in a cruise, funny though I'm afraid not because of the cruise sinking or missing the cruise, but because I have no clue on what to do or even how to dress appropriate while aboard the cruise. I want to try one get away from all one of these days in a cruise, but my fear of not knowing keeps me away from doing so.
@D0NCH33T07 жыл бұрын
Excuses: - Bus broke down/popped a tire: The cruise would most likely be called and told to wait. - Tour not affiliated with cruise line or whatever: You should have known that already and either not taken it or taken it a lot earlier.
