►About the Game -
Tatari is a first-person adventure game where you take the role of a detective assigned to a disappearance case.
As a police detective, you are sent to investigate from the last place the person of interest was seen. From there, you will find yourself experiencing some paranormal behavior that your logical mind can’t seem to get hold of.
You will follow the evidence to a village that has been abandoned for many years and holds many of the secrets and details for your case.
All the available places are filled with puzzles and locks that your goal is to open and get access to forgotten and hidden information that will bring you closer to finding an end to this case. Be careful, though. Some of the puzzles are more cunning than they seem and may cost you your life. Proceed with caution.
Tatari is based upon a traditional Japanese urban legend which you will experience to some extent.

This game is VERY rough around the edges, but I’ll give credit where it’s due. The lantern works wonders! It’s bright but not too bright, and it actually illuminates your surroundings, not just a tiny space in the center of the screen.

Or worse one of those games that's a cash grab and only releases one chapter at the time because they learned from bindi and the ink machine that they can drag out of game for years and charge lots of extra money? The reason they stopped making houses out of paper in Japan was due to the high numbers of people getting papercuts, many of whom died of blood loss. Those houses were dangerous! True story... possibly.

Can confirm these freaking shoji doors and such tear like you would not believe. It’s a pain in the ass. Even the thicker ones I can’t recall the name of: the pretty paper cover peels off easy, and even the “wood” beneath is just two very thin sheets my child accidentally put her toy through when she was 4. If my 4 year old can wreck it, I think this protagonist could drop that lantern and be just fine. 😂

The AI voice made the game more humorous and silly, rather than serious and scary. Hopefully the devs improve the final game and add in more interaction so you can really immerse yourself in the mystery.

I want to arrive, Chris. I _really_ do. But, I haven't left yet. 😶😆 I had high hopes for this one--Japanese game, camping in a forest, etc.--but it was w-a-a-a-y too linear with too much hand-holding. I did like the sound design, as Chris mentioned. And the randy rabbit. (CJU, "should we give the lube to the rabbit?") 🤣 All-in-all, the demo was unimpressive but, if the devs intend to put in a _lot_ of work, I still have hope for the finished game. Is that crazy?

At least the dev was honest about voices, if they would be honest in the same way about game linearity that woud be very welcomed. I see an idea for a plot here but there is still much work to do. And Chris... Chisel and a lub, really? You are a very naughty let's player, shame on you! ;)

Good lord, how that AI butchered 'Sumire'. I am interested in where the it's going, with the story clearly based on Okiku (though Sumire is probably going to do more than grow hair), since I like that story...but I really hope they improve.

Hey there, Chris. I have to agree with your assessment of the game wholeheartedly. Games that basically railroad you and kind of hold your hand and make you go on a path sequence, those games, kind of drag, and aren’t very creative. Hopefully when the full version of this game comes out, a lot of the things that you pointed out will be Modified and made a lot better. I don’t know how many developers are working on this game, but all that linear stuff and lack of atmosphere in places and things, like that, sound like a single developer with not a lot of tools at their disposal.

I refuse to play games with AI voice "work." AI has its uses, but I'm heavily wary of their use in creative projects. It isn't even about the death of authenticity, though there usually is more passion to be found when devs aren't relying on AI. Kudos for giving this a go, anyways, Chris. I'm primarily sticking around because you're one of my favorite Let's Players, nowadays. ✌️💗

The disclaimer that pops up when starting says the AI voice will only be used for this demo and even then it can be turned off in the settings. Are you saying you're only refusing to play this and instead will wait for the full game to try it out since it will feature real voices? Or are you going to avoid this game completely simply for it just using AI voices as a placeholder beforehand? If the former then I can see that being an understandable stance to have.

The writers' strike might have been resolved, but the ethics of AI in other creative fields have yet to be addressed.

Oh man. This seems like they tried to cut some corners, and it really didn't work out. So, I don't actually think cutting corners is inherently bad, it can be a good way to get a lot of mileage out of limited resources. I just don't think in this case it worked out very well. Like, I think they would have been better off just having the text appear on screen for dialogue, rather than use those particular automated voices. I think there could be something there, but it would take some serious fine tuning to really get it from where it is now to good.

As soon as I saw the doll in the dream I knew it would be about okiku the doll that was gifted by a girl's older brother on her birthday and she sadly passed away the family wanted to bury it with her but they couldn't and her spirit was tied to it so they gave it to a shrine to take care of the doll and the girls spirit

Looks like there was an option to disable the AI VA at the start and he just didn't choose to disable it....I have a feeling ai voices are hit and / or miss. I don't like the AI voices some times but other times it's ok and please remember it's a demo version , things can always change and they might hire actual / real VA later

I’m glad they intend to hire actual voice actors for the full game, however they have their work cut out for them explaining certain cultural aspects such as the girl dying at 7-5-3/shichi-go-san, the significance kitsune/fox temples/statues/spirits play in Japanese culture and how it correlates to being spirited away, dolls and the proper way to “dispose” of them and what can happen if you don’t, as they supposedly have souls, especially when well loved…. I could go on and on. I’m interested to see what direction they take the story in, as right now they seem to want to go in 500 directions. All of them will require proper explanation for an overseas audience to explain it well. I just… these games can be so very hit or miss. People want SCARES, not a history/culture lesson. At the same time, Asian horror lends itself brilliantly to psychological buildup, rather than gore, and that can be extremely effective. So, again, I’m excited to see where they go with it, but worried, too, lol.

egh what the hell is the point of using AI generated voices that sound awful when it's just a placeholder. Just do what everyone else does and just..... don't have a voice over? you're doing extra work for something that 1) will push players away 2) make the experience worse and 3) will just be deleted eventually anyway? I'd have even just preferred general text to speech for accessibility (though I doubt all the non-"voiced" text is screen-reader compatible)

I can see some potential in this one, but the demo isn't the best way to showcase that. On the rails, not really much atmosphere built up, and not many proper scares, either. It looks as though they might be using the start of the game for the demo? In which case, it could be a slow burn leading up to things, but it's hard to get a measure of that in just a small snippet. I really do hope they get proper voice actors, however. ""AI" nonsense leaves an ugly taste in my mouth.

There was no substance, very empty. Don't use AI voices for this, just plain text is fine. No need for such huge areas if there is nothing in them to use. As a demo it is not very appealing.
