Missing the IKEA Detolf? Look at this

Hey everyone! I understand Coaster mainly sells in the US, with some resellers in Canada, Mexico, and other locations near the US. This does not help viewers outside of these regions. The display case is nothing unique, and I believe it can be found under a different white label, or something very similar is on the market. Give me some time to provide some alternative options. Thanks! For those in the US/Canada, if you are having a hard time finding this display case, do a Google search of "buy coaster delphinium curio". For me it showed a local map with 20+ stores that may have it, also gave a lot of websites that I could check out. Obviously, proceed with caution if shopping on a website you are unfamiliar with.

@@madmax8620 I think it really depends on the reseller since Coaster doesn't directly sell their products. I've seen them prices typically from $200 to $320, and as high as $550. Personally, I think the best range to pick up this cabinet is $200 - $240. And I have seen it sub $200, but I'm a bit cautious when I see low ball prices.

@@madmax8620 Completely agree, the prices of display cases sucks quite a bit right now. And I think it's mostly due to the cost of glass, which is one reason why IKEA has abandoned the detolf; they most likely would be selling it at a loss at $130 (last price before being pulled off market). That said, there are many other display cases out there. Just need to be patient.

The real problem is why they replaced it with worse alternatives. Detolfs had a fine stable metal rod on each side of the glass, holding it up well. Alternatives right now have things like just small triangles in the corners holding up the glass, meaning the entire pressure ends up at the corners of the glass. I'm split on buying one of those since they are similar in price and size to detolfs, just because I worry the glass will break. (Think it claims to support up to 3 kg, but who knows)

Great video! If you wanted to modify the case for taller figures, you could drill additional holes in the upright shelf supports using an inexpensive shelf hole jig. Then you would just purchase some shelf support pins (readily available) and set the shelves at whatever height you wanted. This would need to be done prior to assembly to ensure that the shelf pin holes are at the same level across all 4 supports. Line up the 4 supports next to each other evenly, clamp so they don't move, then draw a line with a square across all 4 supports wherever you want to add the shelf pin holes. As an example, you could add 2 holes above and below each of the factory holes at 2 inches each. This would give you an 8 inch variance for each shelf. Just a thought.

Some extra advice on assembly. When inserting the side panels into the back panel using the plastic bracket -- you can hear some snapping and popping, but if you force it too hard and stress the plastic it can put pressure stretch marks in it, and those uh, those don't go away and will be noticeable if that kind of thing bothers you. So be firm, but gentle. I put some banding marks in my rear left corner. Not that most people will notice, but I'll remember they're there. ;) And it's the one thing I would do differently if I could do it again, is not try to force to tightly. I should have just tried taking the panel out and tried reseating it a few times until it was in perfect. -- Also, my package did not come with any extra corner padding on the outside of the brown box. It was just straight up box, lol. But there was lots of foam inside which kept all the panels safe. I wonder how strong they are. I know they can make glass really strong. At my cake shop we have a cake display case and it has a glass door that's constantly getting abused without issues.

This case is pretty sturdy, that said, it may not prevent figures from sliding around if the whole case moves/shakes. Maybe putting a display case on a thick rug may help with absorbing some of the shock of the footsteps.

Yo, wait I didn't expect to see my shelf in this video, lol! I live in a US state that unfortunately doesn't have an IKEA nor do they ship here, so I had a hard time finding a good, cheap glass shelf until I found this and the detolf-sized version at a City Mill last year. I was initially skeptical; the four black support rods turned me off because I wanted the all-glass look of the Detolf, but I figured that this shelf would neatly hide LED light strips and their wiring better compared to a Detolf, and I was right! My gripes are basically the same as yours, really wish there was more customization for shelves and their low height, but I could easily drill some holes to fix that. Still really happy I made this purchase and this video only reinforced my decision to buy more once this shelf runs out of space.

Yeah, I need to take a closer look at what's available in Canada, since I'm originally from there, though its been a while. I'll see if I can find more display cases which are easier to find in more countries. That said, I know some of my family when they lived in Vancouver would order stuff to a location next to the US border and just drive down to the US to pick it up. I personally drive up to Canada every couple months just to buy Ketchup Chips and Canadian candy, and to visit Canadian malls (because they feel so different than American). 😂

Great review! Unfortunately for me, I didn't have a smooth experience with the display cabinet I received from Coaster. It isn't this exact model--mine has less width and pretty much has the same look and dimensions of the Ikea Detolf. The crossbars that came with mine were bent out of the box and made proper assembly impossible. Still in the process of requesting replacement crossbars (unsure if I'll actually be given any). I knew what I was getting into with ordering an amazon detolf, and after this experience, I personally don't recommend taking the risk.

That's funny. I actually bought this case about a month ago to house my Y'Shtola doll. My biggest con of it is that two sliding doors means there's a big seam going down the middle. I haven't figured out it's "forever home" yet, but I might flip the case around so that the door is on the rear, and the rear flat panel is facing forward. I had actually intended to light up my case, but got sidetracked remodeling my house. So a video specifically talking about lighting this case is going to be a godsend for me. Bcause man I am so tired of learning about remodeling. Handhold me for once, haha! Also, most table saws are not designed for lefthanded people. The construction industry hates me! --- Bonus question if anyone knowledgable reads this :) I need a white bookshelf. Any recommendations?

The specs claim 28 lb / 12.7 kg. The glass shelves look pretty thick, thicker than the IKEA Blaliden & Detolf shelves. Oddly enough, I like the IKEA Rudsta, and want to try cutting off the legs of 2 and stacking them on top of each other as a single display case. I've seen some people do it before.

I was scrolling through Amazon and might have found one that is exactly like the ikea detolf. It’s called “Coaster Bellatrix Curio Cabinet, Cappuccino” can you take a look at it and tell me your thoughts?

I saw this, it is just as you say, a Ikea Detolf clone, but with minor differences. The main difference is how the shelves are held up, this display uses 4 pegs to hold up the shelves instead of 2 bars like the detolf. Personally, I think the 4 pegs make it look cleaner. The frame itself looks a bit thicker and reflective, versus the flat grey frame of the detolf. It might be a little more noticeable than the detolf, but not by much. I'm assuming it builds just like the detolf, or the display case in this video, which means it should be just fine.

aside from the the height issues how do you feel about the shelf stability? the detolf seems sturdy with rods supporting the shelf fully across the sides do you think there might be any issue with just the screws holding them up? also do you happen to know the weight limit of each shelf? I like the iea of wide detolfs but the idea of one snapping in the mid is kinda devastating lol

Each shelf is documented to support 28 lb / 12.7 kg. And the shelf glass thickness is almost twice as thick as the Detolf shelves (basing it on the ones I got in 2020). As for shelf sturdiness, I think it's pretty sturdy. If I were to compare the two, I think the Coaster shelves are stronger.

What lighting option did you put inside these? I actually picked one of these up on Facebook Marketplace on the cheap and really like it. As for making the shelf height a bit more custom, I believe someone outined a detailed approached in the comments about how they would drill new holes to support different shelf sizes.

I got the display case from an independent seller on Amazon, I've noticed the display come and disappear a bit on Amazon over last few years. Maybe the current sellers on Amazon ran out of inventory. But don't worry there are a few ways you can find this display case. One, Google search of "buy coaster delphinium curio", another method is to use their website's store search: storelocator.coasterfurniture.com/. Since this company doesn't have it's own brick and mortar store, they have a lot of resellers.

As much as having no bezels on the middle of the display case makes it look good, the gap is horrendous for dustproofing. My milsbo might hav a bezel in between but dam isit easy to dustproof it. the bezels being thick make it easier to install strips. Also white strips on white bezels make the strips invisible. As compared to lets say a detolf with weatherstrips installed.

I agree, the prices of display cases suck lately. Even the IKEA Detolf before it was taken off the shelf jumped more than doubled its price in a year. Acrylic doesn't seem to be very cheap lately either, I am trying to buy a sheet of 4' x 8' acrylic sheet to make a custom door for a display case I'm building, and they want more for it than the price of the display case in this video. I feel like I need a time machine to buy materials. 🙁

This would be an instant purchase if my Star Wars helmets fit 2 per shelf. 10" deep means most of mine won't even fit front to back, and a 1:1 Vader helmet would be entirely impossible. The search continues...

Yeah, I'm realizing how many people collect helmets which is why I threw some helmets in there, but unfortunately I didn't have any 1:1 scale Star Wars helmets. That said, I just build the display case for my next video today, and it will hold your 1:1 scale helmets and more. LED's arrive for it on Monday, so, hopefully I can get it out pretty quick.

Milsbo may have that center support, which I agree looks bad BUT it allows for dust proofing. I have had my Milsbo for over a year and I have not had to clean any dust out of it, same goes for my my 4 Detolfs of which I have had for over 2 years. Maybe you're doing something wrong with your dust proofing?

I admit, my dust proofing on my Detolf isn't perfect. I do have a 5mm gap at the top of the glass door, and 5mm gap on the bottom; which is big enough for dust to go through over time. Not a lot of dust gets through, but you will see some particles on the top shelf and bottom shelf mostly; rarely I notice dust on the figures. And I do agree, the Milsbo and Blaliden do make it much easier to close up all open areas near the door, making dust proofing easier and better. And this is my only counter argument in making it air tight is, I'm noticing a lot of new figures come with a very strong smell on them after opening them. This could be paint fumes or plasticizer, but for some figures the strong smell lasts for months. I've noticed in my display cases that hold these new figures that a film builds up on the glass that isn't that noticeable on clear glass, but if a mirror shares the same space as the figure, the film on the mirror does distort it's reflection. So, I've had to opens of my display cases to vent them. So, having some airflow in your display case isn't a bad thing. ☺

I completely agree. And given that one of my tempered glass panels exploded in one of my cases this week, that doesn't really happen with acrylic panels. That said, one can slowly replace their glass panels with acrylic, since acrylic panels are easy to purchase and cut. Though, not sure if worth cost for most.

@@H_tudor In very rare cases, the display case in my next video actually had a warning label in the manual saying Tempered Glass has a 0.3% chance of self exploding, so I just learned the statistic. But, it is pretty rare, and I don't think you need to worry.

Do you have an Apple HomeKit compatible suggestion for the LED strips?

If you want to use Apple HomeKit to control your LEDs, I would suggest getting Smartplugs that are compatible with your Homekit app. I will use the remote that comes with the LED to set the color/brightness I want, then use the smart plug to turn it on and off. I just throw my LED remotes in a ziplock bag and store them never to see them again from this point on. I have my room setup with Alexa, so all my LEDs turn on or off based on voice commands. Or via mobile app. This way you can use any brand of LED and make them all work together.

Good question, I am not sure the size of large lego sets these days. A few of my friends are huge lego collectors, but they are more into ships. A single shelf is 21" wide between frame, 22.5" if you can squeeze it between the frame. 12" deep, though shelf itself is only 10". And roughly 12" tall. Hope that helps.

Aside from trying to find a location from the Coaster website, I am trying to find alternative locations for this display case. Checked every store listed in Canada, no one had it. Seems impossible to get here, after taxes its also 1/3 more expensive than anything at ikea.

Can’t wait to see more display case videos! I am a new collector in Europe and finding a stylish, transparent case like this has been impossible so far. I also ordered a 1/6 figure with 43cm of dimension, and I am afraid I won’t be able to find any display case that has so much space for me to fit the figure :(

I do have more coming, currently working on my next display case video and I just got the lighting installed, so it should come out soon. That said, unfortunately the EU, America, and Asia have very different distributors, so hopefully some of the cases I review have similar models over there.

Height between shelves, the same as detolf?

No, they are not. This display case and the Detolf are the same size in height. But this display case has an additional shelf, which means all other shelves are shorter to make up for the new shelf. I believe someone gave a pretty decent comment about how to drill your own holes and remove a shelf to have the same shelf setup as the Detolf. So, it is possible for this display case to have the same shelf height as the detolf with some customization.

@Battletide. I have 2 ruddstas, and 2 detolfs. Ideally, I'd sell the 2 detolfs and buy 4 more ruddstas. Walls look so much better when the cases match.

Tell me about it, I did a lot of browsing around for display cases, and they all seem pretty expensive these days. The price of glass itself shot up with the pandemic, from the charts I've seen, in the last 3 years it has increased the same in price as the previous 20 years. Maybe this is why IKEA display cases use super thin glass now. Kind of sucks all around.

This is a fair point. That said, the display case is pretty standard, and I expect something similar to it is on the international markets, if not already white labeled. My morning is pretty crazy with meetings, but give me a little time provide some alternative options.

Try doing a google search of "buy coaster delphinium curio". When I did this, a lot of websites came up, google maps showed like 20+ locations in my area where I can check out. This is a good place to start. I live in Singapore, and i was gonna get a DETOLF for my collection. Now they discontinued it and the BLALIDEN doesnt fit my needs. I hate it.

I know I am very late to respond to this, but have you checked out sgtoydisplay.com/ ? They make really nice display cases, I have a Terravault which is one of their more extreme cases, but they do have other ones. Though, they are still pretty expensive.

These are almost $200. Detolfs were $60-80; for these prices id rather get Moducases.

That is fair, these are higher than what we are used to. The detolf was priced at $130 in 2023 before being taken off the market, most likely because it would be selling at a loss at $130; which is one reason all new IKEA display cases use thinner and smaller glass panels. That said, Moducases are really nice, but you are looking at ~$1000+, and a wait time of 6 - 12 months to get them. Though, if you have large statues, this is an easy decision, since not many display cases support statues.

Detolf was like $80. This is close to triple the price. Much wider too. Not really a good alternative to the detolf.
