Just finished watching Mission:Impossible (one) and noticed there was a trick that Ethan did which is referenced in Dead Reckoning. In MI he does a magic trick to hide the floppy disk of the NOC list. This same trick is used on Grace in MI7 to get the key. Very smart story writing. Love from sunny Sydney, Australia.

You’ve made some mistakes in your summary. Ethan spared Paris life earlier when she was trying to stop him from getting to Gabriel and so the Entity predicted she would betray them and tried to have her killed. Gabriel wounded her but was unable to finish her off. She later came back to save Ethan but much more importantly told him the location of the Entity on the sub as she was present with Gabriel during that conversation.
@TheNerdDoc
@TheNerdDoc Жыл бұрын
Paris did not know where the sub was located. Gabriel has also not indicated he has that information. You can probably make a convincing argument that Gabriel knows, but we don't have confirmation of that just yet. All Paris gave to Ethan was a name. She didn't even tell him that it was the name of the sub.
@dfchang813
@dfchang813 Жыл бұрын
@@TheNerdDoc She clearly told him the Sevastopol is a sub. He was confused at first and asked her where in Sevastopol but she told him in French it was a sub. Gabriel tells Ethan he knows the location of the Entity when he was about to be killed. What I don’t understand is why doesn’t the Entity just have Gabriel destroy the key the minute he takes possession of it. It’s not like they need it or anything. Also technically shouldn’t it be able to make infinite copies of itself once in the worldwide Cloud? I enjoyed the movie but feel like the decision to go with AI as the main villain creates too many plot holes that the movie struggles to answer. I mean how did the halves of the key get from the Arctic circle where the bodies were recovered to Ilsa and Alanna? Who recovered the bodies and how in the world were the halves of the key recovered from the bodies but not instantly secured? If the US recovered the bodies then they know damn well what happened and why didn’t they immediately send a crew down to the sub with the key to take possession of the Entity? It was a really jarring plot point for me to go from the shot of the dead body with the key around his neck to just all of a sudden being told Ilsa has it. Like wtf? 😅. And finally they said at the end Paris still had a pulse. I think we are supposed to infer she isn’t going to die but will be back in the sequel.

I feel Grace will be an important character later on. How she has been working for only herself throughout the film and acting like she doesn’t know the basic skill like driving and making mistakes as Alana, while dealing on the train. Having a massive record as a professional thief and con artist. She has been trying to get away from Ethan since the beginning, or maybe she was just trying to work with him, maybe she is one of the makers of the AI.

After Gabriel kills Ilsa Faust on the bridge, I'm not too clear about Rebecca Ferguson's performance in the next half of the story (M:I 8), according to the IMDB cast. I'll be surprised.

@@TheNerdDocthere's lots of hints that she may be alive. Like the way they lingered on the knives on the table at the party, the way Ethan and Ilsa were exchanging glances like they have some sort of plan. I figure it's making the ai think Ilsa is dead so they can defeat it. There's also the fact that there are many callbacks to the first movie, like the White Widow doing a trade on the train, like her mom in MI1. There was also a death fakeout in MI1 on a bridge, wondering if that's what happened with Ilsa. I think the first death fakeout in MI7 was a way to throw us off the scent, or hint us towards the fact that she actually didn't die. It's weird they didn't linger on her death long, and she's only been in a few of the movies.
@TheNerdDoc
@TheNerdDoc Жыл бұрын
@@massir7769 All of that is plausible, I just don't think Gabriel would be that careless. It also greatly lessens the deaths in Part Two if we assumed people died three times in Part One, only for all three times to be fake outs. We'll find out in a year though. Honestly, it didn't really make that much sense for Ilsa to even be able to find Grace on that bridge, but I guess we can let that slide. 😅

@TheNerdDoc
@TheNerdDoc Жыл бұрын
@@nanikanna7295 Ilsa probably had comms, even though they didn't show it, but Benji and Luther were not communicating with Ilsa. At this point it's been a few weeks since I saw the movie, but I don't recall seeing Ilsa at all while Ethan was trying to get to Grace. If the AI was talking to Ilsa, it would've showed her, no? It was a surprise when Ilsa showed up at the bridge. Maybe I missed something, but if I did it certainly wasn't clear the AI was communicating with anyone other than Ethan. Also, Benji left to go find Ethan and warn him that the AI was talking to him. There was no mention of Ilsa at that time. Wouldn't Benji have wanted to warn her as well, or sent Luther to warn Ilsa while Benji warned Ethan?

Grace is just a great thief so I found it unbelievable that she was able to hold her own even for a few seconds against trained agents. Also not pleased with Ilsa being fridged. No way she loses to Gabriel one on one with what we have been shown of the character in the past 2 movies. She also has a sword with longer reach. It was also extremely ham fisted to literally replace her with Grace. Seriously? Why can’t we have two women in the team? It’s not like Ilsa and Grace’s skill sets overlap at all and the dynamic between two female leads would have been a great addition to add something fresh after 7 movies. There was really no reason to kill off Ilsa to provide agency to Ethan and his team. It’s the old fridge trope again and lazy writing in my opinion.

I do have a question though, When Grace was wearing a fake Alanna mask, I did notice that her eyes were still brown and not blue like the real Alanna. I still don't know how Zola did not notice the sudden change in eye color that made it obvious that this is NOT Alanna, since he is Alanna's brother and would be familiar with her blue eyes. Maybe the movie editors did it on purpose to show the audience that this is a fake Alanna, but these fake masks are always EXACTLY the same as the real person and it's impossible to tell the difference. What do you guys think about this?

Even how she was acting in front of Kittridge was super suspect. I don't know how Kittridge didn't realize it wasn't her, and he's very familiar with the IMF masks. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a previous version of the script that had Grace get called out, but they changed that part and left the eyes and the odd behavior.

I know it's probably gonna be a good movie but I really don't want, OR NEED an origin story at this point, for any of these characters. I'm not saying it can't be done and done well, but it is completely unnecessary to this kind of film. Especially since we already know so much about what kind of person he IS, TODAY in the franchise.
@TheNerdDoc
@TheNerdDoc Жыл бұрын
I hear you. I'm hoping they're smart enough to not give us an origin story. It looks like Part 2 will give us Gabriel's past with Ethan, which in turn is why Ethan got into the IMF, but I don't think they're going to be heavy-handed with it. We'll see though

Really confused about these: 1) Why did Alanna let Gabriel go? Also who's threatening her? (as she said "my life is on the line") 2) Did Kittridge and Dentlinger work together? Otherwise it did not make sense that they happen to be on the same train. 3) Was that an arranged meeting or simply Gabriel and Paris breaking in? So it would appear that Gabrield pretended to work with the US government, right?
@TheNerdDoc
@TheNerdDoc Жыл бұрын
1. The governments of the world were threatening her because she had one half of the key. She was setting up buyers for both halves, which meant whoever bought the full key would also need to protect her from all the other countries she didn't sell to. 2. Denlinger was basically the boss of Kittridge. I don't think they were working together on the train, and it's unclear if Kittridge even knew Denlinger was there, but Denlinger would absolutely have known Kittridge was there, and what was going to take place on the train. They were on the same side, but Denlinger had plans of his own that he did not let Kittridge in on. 3. Denlinger arranged to meet with Paris in order to discuss working together. It's unclear if Gabriel was also supposed to be there, or if he just crashed the meeting, but Denlinger wanted to discuss the partnership so it would've needed to go through Gabriel at some point either way. I don't believe Gabriel was pretending to work with the US government though. If he was, that meeting would've been unnecessary because Denlinger would have assumed they were already working toward the same goal.

Great recap, thank you. I loved the train scene. But did not like the convoluted story, the excessive time spent on Grace, the diminishing of Ilsa's character and then her useless death scene. (Hope she is not actually dead. Shall in see in Part II). The embodiment of AI in Gabriel was super confusing, made him weird and creepy, and really hard to take seriously. But I love the guys chasing Ethan. Just don't love how they treated Ilsa's character AT ALL. It was actually hard to watch the rest of the film after her death scene. Grace is cute, but I just don't care about her. She's kind of useless. Her skills are so minimal, an old lady could do the role and would have been preferable to the which-girlfriend-will-he-choose plotline. There were also so many new characters to keep track of at first. Why have ten people in the boardroom, spouting one line each? Couldn't that have had 4 speaking actors and the rest be important suits who are there to pass out from the green gas? Anyway, just it hurt my head a bit, which is why I appreciate your recap.

I agree with you, but I think Ilsa died because people would actually care. Imagine if Grace died, you wouldn't care, right? You can't kill Benji or Luther yet (although I think that may be coming), so you're left with Ilsa. Maybe you could've killed White Widow, but Ilsa would obviously have more impact. I think we're going to have more of those semi-useless actors in a room in the next movie though. There's a lot of US joint chiefs that will be meeting with the US president to discuss the end of the world, so I imagine a lot of people in those conversations won't matter.

@TheNerdDoc
@TheNerdDoc Жыл бұрын
I think that's something that will be answered in the next movie. My guess is that the AI actually wants Ethan to find the sub. It may be that the AI's power is limited until something on the sub's server is unlocked in some way. Or perhaps the AI is just using Ethan to destroy the sub once and for all. Hard to say at this point, but the only benefit of leaving Paris alive is to help Ethan get to the sub.

Nice! Good explanation of the movie. It was as good as expected, but..... Why? Why kill off Ilsa charcter in the lamest way. I understand where the movie is going, but the scene didn't do it for me. If they wanted to kill her off. They should have done it at the end in a BIG boss fight where Ethan really would have to choose who to save with his own hands. It would have been a more impactful scene. Im not happy how they killed off Ilsa, as you can see. She should if lived, but if she had to die for the plot of the movie, I understand. Dead Reckoning is a complete movie on its own, similar to Rogue Nation. The MI7 story is weak at best and MI4, 5 & 6 are all better stories. The demise of Ilsa is very very weak and completely unbelievable. This is a woman who took out the Bone Doctor and others only to fall to Gabriel, complete BS and incredibly sad Also unbelievable is Ethan’s reaction, this is a woman he loves dearly. For proof of that, their embrace as the end of Ghost Protocol and when they were together in Venice each for the 1st time.
