Really appreciated your interpretation of this movie. Unfortunately a lot of people seem to miss the philosophical depth of the movie, which is sad. The one thing that you miss in your rundown is that "Alfie's" neural pathways were a copy of Maya and Joshua's baby while the child was en utero. Alfie is essentially their daughter. This is why she innately trusts Joshua because he is her "Father" in a unique but definitive way. Of course this is unknown to Joshua initially but is explained by the simulant portrayed be Ken Watanabe to Joshua (and the audience). But it also explains why Joshua couldn't just kill the child. Yes he wanted to find Maya, but he had an innate need to protect the child as if she were his own (which was by design since the basis for her neural pathways was actually that of thier daughter which it would seem the child also had what would had been the physical likeness of their daughter). Secondly there is a moment of clear realization and reckoning for Colonel Howell right before she died as she realized the true goodness of Alfie and the folly of the US war on AI when she saw Alfie try to save her life although she was trying to kill the child; it was zealous actions and ignorance of her soldiers that ultimately resulted in her demise which indicates as is found out in the movie that the West is responsible for it's own troubles. Thirdly the war was a ruse in more ways than one; it was apparent that New Asia's AI tech had surpassed that of the US and it was strongly hinted near the end that the US was studying the tech as it was doing resarch on simulants aboard NOMAD; it was implied throughout the movie simulants were only in New Asia which suggests that the war was also about controlling the technology outright and maintaining hegemony. The crux of the movie's thesis is the deferrence between life whether it be organically or artificially derived once it is sentient is only arbitrary. This movie was masterful in storytelling. I predict that when enough of the people who see it who can truly understand it's depth as well as appreciate it's stunning visuals; it will come to be seen as a classic.

I didn't miss the copy of the baby, but I don't know that I'd go as far as to say that's why Alphie immediately trusted Josh. There's a lot more to that, and the movie doesn't have the time to delve into where that trust came from. I also don't know that I agree that Howell realized the true goodness in Alphie just before death. That is certainly a possibility, but given how she acted the entire film, making such a drastic change in character seems off. You could very well be correct, but I believe that she realized her soldiers attacking would ultimately get her killed, and her reaction was that of someone who didn't want to die. I do think the US wanted to control the AI, but I don't know that it was their main focus. They intentionally stopped developing AI (at least publicly). From that standpoint, it makes more sense that they would be studying the AI in order to better defeat it, which was their public agenda. But I do agree the US was clearly researching AI, not only on NOMAD, but also in the facility near the nuclear blast site. Will The Creator become a classic? It has the potential, but I don't know that people will take the time to understand it. It feels like a modern Blade Runner, but we live in a different time now where people don't try to look for a deeper meaning in most films, especially big CG spectacles like this. I guess I don't have as much faith in people as you do, but I would love to see this become a classic. It's certainly deserving.

I loved every aspect of the movie. My only wish was they fleshed out the "human error" part of the nuke being dropped on LA. Was it simply detonated on accident and the U.S. blame it on A.I.? Or did they somehow program and A.I. unintentionally to create the destruction? I would like to know more about that. Other than that it was a masterpiece imo.

Amazing science fiction here, and very relevant to this point in history. P.S., It is absolutely believable in the movie that the US nuked itself. Since 9/11 all of these US wars have been pointless disasters that cause the opposite of their goals, most of which were never well defined anyway. It would fit that pattern.

Everyone acts like this movie was an attack on the USA, but there a lot of similarities to the Vietnam war. Dehumanizing the enemy, fighting out of fear rather than need, and a healthy dose of PTSD. I cant believe others havnt seemed to pick up on this.

Have to agree, I like the idea that in reality things are not so black and white as good or bad and the movie really makes you consider from an ethical standpoint what is right and what is wrong not simply because the leaders of your country deem it as the right course of action.

It was never said that it could only produce a copy of the person for a limited amount of time. That just happened to be the case for the soldier because he was dead for a while. That's why she was so interested in getting the backup from the woman since she had just passed. The soldier brain had already gone through significant cell death. That's why they were limited in the time they had.

That is correct, but they never said it was infinite time either. To me, the fact that they weren't trying to get a copy of every dead soldier, or even more than just those handful of people implies that it wasn't infinite.

They talked about Buddhist beliefs of reincarnation, but I didn't get the impression they had the tech or the intent to actually make that happen. I enjoyed this film a lot, even though there were several plot holes. However, the cinematography, action sequences, special effects and acting were phenomenal. I was especially impressed with country star, Sturgill Simpson as Drew and little Madeleine Voyles as Alphie! They each chewed up the scenery every time they were on screen. Ralph Ineson as General Andrews with his unique, gravelly voice was awesome as well. What was up with his weird glasses though? And any movie that Gemma Chan is in, is worth the price of admission alone, just to see her beauty light up the screen. Its a shame that it didn't fare that well at the box office, it deserves better than it did. Hopefully, it will gain a cult following once it hits VOD and streaming over the next few years. Overall, I give this movie a "B+" grade and will be purchasing the Blue Ray. It's worth repeated viewing over the next decade, or until thr real AI takes us out.

I'm a huge Gareth Edwards fan and was excited about this movie and even saw it early on Thursday. I did "like" it but 3 things really took me out of truly being swept up into the story... 1) the dialog is incredibly bad, it's borderline offensive on how dumbed-down everything is about how characters talk and interact. 2) the spatial and time logistics do not make sense on screen. Examples: things blow up and it doesn't kill people, running distances are wildly inconsistent, supposedly "stealthy" action/soldiers are wearing bright lights and talking at full volume which is not "stealthy" at all. The soldiers, military, and political leaders spoke, acted, and interacted at a middle-school education level, car wrecks that should kill everyone are turned into a punchline, and robots acting like keystone cops in one scene but precise deadly weapons moments later. AND the giant floating ship??? what? so there is just one of these flying in another country's airspace looking to destroy entire villages and it's clearly visible from a hundred miles away and "paints" its target with visible light? come on man, it looked cool but made zero sense. 3) by now we all know that AI is very quick, smart, and capable so why does its abilities seem to be so inconsistent throughout the story? this really created jarring tonal shifts and inconsistent expectations for me. All of that being said - I would like to see more from this universe and to continue the story of AI and mankind living as one. Overall it looked cool and I feel I may have liked it a lot more if I had seen it and all the dialog was in a language I did not understand. I'll try it again but for me, this was a disappointment.

I agree on all points. I'm a little more forgiving with some of the inconsistencies, but I agree that they were kinda bad. The dialogue is where I really wish they put more time into this. I think that's easily the weakest part of the film, along with the lack of explanation about why Asia doesn't have the ability to attack the Nomad.

How did Alphie go from being gravely injured to 100% perfectly fine when she was laying next to the comatose Maya? Who fixed/repaired her? And why did the general decide to send bombs to all the remaining AI strongholds at the end, when they could have done this from the beginning? Also, how is that NOMAD can fly freely across any country's borders, invading their airspace and laying waste to thousands of civilians, without getting attacked by that country's air force?

NOMAD is a satellite that flies in near space. Near space doesn't belong to air territory of any country. You don't need much power to fly in near space. The general knew the bases's location by following Joshua, after he met Nirmira, not in the beginning. If you watched carefully, a soldier told Josha that you are a hero bec you killed Nirmira, found the weapon and found the location of the bases. Alphie is probably fixed at the base

We saw earlier in the film that she allowed her likeness to be used for simulants. There are two lines of thought as to why one of her simulants would be on NOMAD. 1. They were researching simulants, and some of them just happened to use Maya's likeness, with no further connection. 2. Since they knew Maya was their target, they specifically gathered simulants in an effort to potentially use them during an upcoming operation. At the end of the day, they needed a Maya simulant on NOMAD to have that reunion with Josh, so there may never have been a proper explanation for it beyond that story necessity.

What I don’t understand in the movie is why new Asia don’t have the capacity to fight America. They have police but they can’t seem to do anything with nomad and american army rampaging their land. Isn’t there any politics ?

It was to show the stark contrast between the two. Asia didn't seem to have any aerial weaponry that would allow them to attack Nomad directly. They had drones and things of that nature, but nothing more. They focused on developing AI and maturing their minds, while the US focused on military might.

If I understand your question correctly, Josh died on the Nomad as he was embracing Grace. Grace didn't die at that point because she was already dead, and her simulant would've died soon anyway because they have a limited lifefspan when a brain is transferred in that way. Answer to the us nuke question, the United States has made many mistakes resulting in Innocent American/etc Citizens to “turn off” and because they feared losing favor of the American taxpayers, they push the blame on someone else. It’s a classic manipulative tactic governments have used throughout time, and I’m quite confident, that while building the nomad, somehow a nuke fell from it, and “coincidentally” hit the only city below the Nomad… Assessing the damage they realized all the tax payer money they would lose, they blamed the robots, because as they say throughout the US preach “They aren’t real” and “they have no feelings” making them seem unpredictable. There's a scene in the movie at the bus stop where there's a sign that clearly states "Free Wi-Fi". So your entire premise that there is no internet is either wrong, or the term "Wi-Fi" in this alternate timeline means something completely different.

I see this movie 100% different than everyone, and I think I am right and you all are wrong. Correct, they state they cannot kill the Nirmata... but it doesn't mean they can't kill humans. As a matter of fact, the AI/Robots kill or try to kill plenty of humans in this movie. The child figures out quickly it can use human's empathy and emotions to get what it wants. You see this throughout the movie as it uses emotions to get what it wants. The child is also made to serve one goal, and that is to destroy the space station. It therefore uses it's ability to manipulate her "father" throughout the movie to obtain this goal. Then at the very end. You see her programmed crying turn into a smile and laughter after the child realizes it has won. At best case, at the end, the remaining humans on Earth are dependant on the child to alllow them to survive. At worst.. the child is now an unstoppable super weapon and the smile at the end was it realizing it won. I feel I am right about this, as if you take this from a programming view.. the child clearly was made with one task to complete. It isn't human, so it can't change it's task, etc.. And the fact it completes it's task, makes me think it knew what it was doing up until that point. I dunno.. just how I see it. I am surprised more people don't see it this way. Oh, I will add, if I am right.. and the fact most people watching this movie think it has a happy ending.. leads me to worry about our future with AI and how easily people can be manipulated to do horrible things to other humans by it.

The theory is relatively sound, but it does have some holes. For instance, if that was the case, why did they wait for the military invasion before the child started her mission? What was preventing her from starting her mission long before that time? Also, why did the child allow itself to get taken by the military toward the end? Going by your theory, it left a lot of chance to Josh saving her and taking her up to the space station. She also seemed to very much care about Josh dying on the space station, when at that point her emotion was no longer necessary as the destruction of the Nomad was guaranteed.

​@@TheNerdDoc I think maybe the Robots/AI knew getting up to the space station was completely impossible without human assistance. So maybe they created this plan and then somehow influenced the humans to send the father, as he was really the secret weapon, to kick off the plan to get the bomb, the girl, on the space station. It does leave a lot of, if they only did this or that, to the plan's failure. But maybe the AI calculated the risk and decided it was worth it. Thus, why the child allowed itself to be taken once it knew it sowed the seeds for the next stage of the plan. Hence the road trip with dad and not an initial surrender. As for the crying after the destruction of the Nomad was guaranteed.. that is the one flaw that kind of sticks. We could think the child wanted to leave her "father" with a nice memory that he won... but that would mean the robot cares, etc.. Which totally then destroys the rest of this take. You could think maybe the child needs time to switch emotions.. it isn't an on/off switch. But that isn't likely. So I admit.. that last scene on the space station is a problem to my interpetation. If it wasn't for that last one scene between child/father.. I would 100% be sure of my take.

@@bschuler It's a good analysis either way. It would be nice to get more perspective on the film from the writer or director, but it doesn't seem like we'll get that, or any kind of sequel
