@@Perceptive-Abyss yes i think the whole Gabriel idea is just messed up from the beginning, the actor just makes it worse. He is just a bad written and cliché (literally the not intimidating version of Momoa in Fast X) way to give Cruise someone to punch. Leaving the AI alone and focusing on governments chasing the keys would have given much more realism, mistery and ambiguity to the plot and to the villain. This movie is written in a very very lazy and bad way. I didnt like the casting of new characters as a whole: Morales is the worst (unknown, bad actor, not charismatic or intimidating at all, cant fight), but even Atwell (not hot enough for a female lead in a spy movie, acting is average and over done, face too little expressive and dumb looking...but at least it's coherent with her character, who is not supposed to be intelligent, charming or intriguing, while Morales is the opposite of what his character is supposed to be) is far from ok. Whigam and Klementieff were decent choices, but their characters are so flat and irrelevant they really couldnt give anything important to the plot (whigam role especially is even humiliating for a good actor as he is).

His one is much more epic to me than this pompous crap, but also much more elegant, classy and able to give rythm to scenes, not just to overwhelm them in senseless ways. Ps. Fallout was epic, DR1 was more of an unfunny action comedy with a senseless switch to a Shakespeare parody in the middle, as i've read somewhere. Pps. @@ElMatadorDelMar123 To each their own I guess: it's totally subjective as I know you know. I like the grand scale of the last two films. DR is a guilty pleasure for me as there's no politics, it's just a well made film constructed by real creatives. The plot is mediocre for sure, but personally? I watch these films for their visceral nature. The stunts, the running, the stakes, and my oh my the music. 'Fallout', 'Escape Through Paris', 'The Exchange', 'Chasing Grace', 'War is Coming', and many more DR tracks are my go-to music for training (runs and such). They aren't necessarily as intricately crafted as Kraemer or Giacchino's work, that I know. But I think your frustration is with Cruise and McQ at the end of the day. They chose to scrap Kraemer. They chose to hire Balfe. They requested Balfe employ the Top Secret Drum Corps for the DR score. McQ is even listed as a producer on the album. Can't change the direction they're going so I'd sit back, enjoy the quality filmmaking, and try to gleam some enjoyment from the new M:I film/music material we ARE getting. I sympathize with you, I do. Never fun seeing something you love take a detour you really dislike. That's also pretty stupid actually: what grants you Gabriel will not use the keys to control you once he has them and knows the location? Why do you trust him so much. There are only two possible solutions: 1) Entity wanting Ethan to find it: but in this case you didnt need to kill Ilsa at all, this would just risk to compromise your plan. You didnt need anything at all, just send him an email instead of hacking governments so everyone will try to control you lol. 2) Entity doesnt exists, Gabriel set everything up just to kill all ethan's friends and get a revenge. This is the only realistic way they can handle it, but would be not surprising at all and just cringe probably.

Honestly my thoughts too. Ilsa was a so much better character than everyone else except Lane (in Rogue Nation only, that Fallout beard and hairstyle is ridicolous) and she was so beautiful and magnetic that Ilsa was really stealing the show from Cruise, so not only he wrote her off, but made it in such a stupid, irrelevant and humiliating way her legacy will be screwed forever (seriously what other reason for the sword vs knife thing?). We all know about his ego, this hypothesis is much more believable than Mc Quarrie writing such a dumb mess by his own volition. But there is another option in covid delays causing unsolvable schedule conflicts and forcing to write her off: still this doesnt explain why they were forced to do it in such a cringe way.
@jamesatkinsonja6 ай бұрын
@@Giovanni-dd6kq I don't see what is really 'humiliating' about it. Her death motivates the third act [as Ethan needs to avoid the urge to avenge her by killing Gabrielle]. It also shows Gabrielle is a significant threat by taking her down [the 'worf effect' as TV Tropes puts it] and changes Grace as a character [as she starts working for Ethan rather than against him]. Rebecca did interviews with Hayley Atwell in a very 'passing the torch' move so it seemed very mutual.
@Giovanni-dd6kq6 ай бұрын
@@jamesatkinsonja 1) as you said: she dies only to make Gabriel look intimidating and evil, while for the rest of the movie he doesnt look this way at all: he's kicked by ethan like a punk (literally every bad guy, main or side one, who ever fought against him in the saga gave him much more trouble), he he isnt able to kill Paris despite taking her by surprise, he acts in stupid ways and is always made up easily. But Ilsa is killed by him in a minute and having a sword against a knife? This would be humiliating even for Benji. And if that's not enough their fight is probably the most unrealistic and worst executed in the whole saga: this Morales just isnt able to fight, he looks like a piece of wood, what a downgrade from Cavill and Fallout bathroom guy. They literally never needed the villain to kill a main character just to look intimidating: Gabriel sucks and is the first one to need a cringe plot armour to look dangerous. 2) Even the antagonism between Ethan and Gabriel is so cliché and flat, just looks like the Momoa-Toretto rivalry in Fast X: again, only way they had to make them be perceived as real antagonists was to kill off another character? And if so...why not Luther or Julia? They are basically useless to plot development, both very flat characters but very important to Ethan: creating an artificial rivalry against a flat cliché villain isnt really a thing worth turning the best character of 21st century spy-action by miles into a Vesper Lind who fights like a drunk jedi. 3) That's the funny point: Ilsa doesnt makes Grace better, she makes her worse...for one hour and an half or more Grace is constantly saved by Ethan for no reason while everyone else tries to kill her, but somehow she isnt able to realise Ethan is good and trust-worthy. You have been paid a lot to get a key, that means it's a very precious thing: every serious person would just kill you or at least knock you off immediately, so just not doing that is trust worthy. But ethan saves her multiple times for no reason, she continues to not understand it and betrays him, looking like the most stupid character in the whole franchise and very annoying...in Venice she comes to the point of absurdity, she is literally behaving this way just because the plot says so: you have this South american dandy with terminator glasses threatening to kill you, while the man who already saved your life ten times despite your betrayals is acting as if you are equally or more important to him than a long time friend, but you still run away from the only person trying to protect you, perfectly knowing you cant fight a 5 years old? Not even women in horror movies parodies behave in such a stupid way. The point is: why? They clearly chose to kill Ilsa before choosing to introduce Grace, so they made her up in a way that would lead to it, not caring about how bad this would make look her as a character. Needing someone to get killed for you to understand you can trust her friends is very very very stupid. 4) Even the sacrifice of Ilsa for Grace (a total stranger and not useful at all, more an obstacle with her dumbness) is very bad executed, despite possibly being the only remotly fascinating idea of the whole movie, since it implies such a good heart it's almost moving. But there are two main problems: a) first of all, it doesnt imply any evolution for Ilsa: risking death (more than here: risking Lane to understand your betrayal is much more dangerous than a sword vs knife fight) to save an innocent stranger is literally the first things she does whem she appears in Rogue Nation, when she saves Hunt b) if you want to make a sacrifice you have to make it look like one: here her life doesnt look in big danger (no one with a brain left would loose with a sword against a knife), she doesnt seem scared but cocky, she fights like she doesnt give much about life; the point of sacrifice is going to CERTAIN DEATH, being aware of it and scared, but doing it for the sake of good. Here it looks like the straight opposite. 5) The replacement with Grace is probably the most humiliating thing, for both character and actress. Grace is a very cliché (really nothing more than a damsell in distress Ethan constantly need to look after like a baby, saved cringly by plot armour various times), flat (her only evolution is getting to trust Ethan, but as i said it's made in the most stupid and humiliating way for her), useless (arrested by italian police lol), stupid and annoying character, forced in every scene for no reason at all [We have this AI giving access to unlimited power and everyone knows about it, as the movie itself tells us, but the only people we see running after the keys are Hunt, a middle aged dandy with a few side guys and a useless average thief? The CIA really cant even attempt to get two keys without using the white widow, who doesnt hire a commando (as she did in Fallout for much less) but an average thief found on the internet she doesnt know she cant trust, who cant steal a bike and is even able to get arrested by italian police? This doesnt make a shade of sense]: a plot where Ilsa dies and she stays alive is totally unrealistic and enough of an humiliation for Ilsa, but Grace turns every scene she's in into an unfunny action comedy, and that totally brings away the gravity of Ilsa's death...a plot full of characters who behave in very stupid ways but somehow are always able to stay alive with cringe plot armour, while the most skillful and intelligent dies in a stupid way (with cringe plot armour given to the villain lol) is straight up schizophrenic and just makes clear their first goal was to write off Ilsa, not to make her death meaningfull to her, other characters or the plot. But that's the least: Ilsa dies in a minute in the middle of the movie (usually important characters dies at the end, that's a law of screemwriting and made for a reason), we have a cringe two minutes mourning and then the plot just moves on as nothing happened, with a cringe action comedy tone totally inconsistent with Venice one and which i found disgusting on a human level; only impact on plot is Grace change of heart, so stupid in premises and development it humiliates her much more than Ilsa. Ethan didnt even need that to hate Gabriel since he appears to already hate him: and him too seems to really not give much about Ilsa after a few minutes, Benji and Luther even less. Looks like everyone, Director included, just forgot she ever existed. 6) Another thing humiliating and senseless is Ethan constantly telling Ilsa to go away because of danger, as if she's some kind of Julia who cant look after herself, while she has always been the most skillful and autonomous character in the saga. On the other hand he not only never tells anything similar to Benji and Luther (who are in much bigger danger than her, but somehow Gabriel isnt able to notice), but he insists to carry around Grace for no reason (she doesnt want to go on the train but he basically forces her to): she's literally useless and would die every 5 minutes if not for him saving her constantly, villains behaving in stupid ways and cringe plot armours, but he perceives her to be less in danger than Ilsa. 7) Last but not least that's humiliating for the actress: Hayley Atwell is average and stupid-looking as a woman, pretty bad as an actress; she doesnt belong to a spy movie, more to Marvel movies. She's one of the least charming and charismatic women in the whole saga. Rebecca Ferguson instead was by far the best looking, most magnetic and charming. For her being replaced by Atwell is top tier humiliation...it just seems to say: you aged too fast woman (but even looking older the difference in charm is appalling), go home. She did interviews with her because they forced her too, as always with actresses. But in Rome premiere she went flirting with Cruise in front of her, in a very dramatic way, as if she was trying to state something, clear sign she's embittered despite faking not to be in interviews.

@@Giovanni-dd6kq i totally agree with every single word you said: crazy how they killed the best character in the saga in the most idiotic way just to introduce a new character (far less interesting on its own, played by a far less fascinating actress) but then totally screwed this new character making her the dumbest and most annoying person ever just because they didnt want to waste their time thinking about an intelligent way to get Ilsa killed. Lazy writing at its peak: destroyed two characters at once. The whole Venice part doesnt make a shade of sense: every single character behaves like an idiot. But the train one is not any better. Even crazier is how people seem to like this movie just because Tom Cruise became Hollywood idol after Top Gun: this is by far the worst Mission Impossible movie...bad actors, annoying stereotyped and uninteresting characters, dumb as hell screenplay, unoriginal Dom Toretto style action (very bad shot for the saga standards, especially in Rome), schizophrenic director, CGI everywhere, reducing Benji and Luther to some useless cameo, getting rid of the best character for no reason and going on as nothing happened, with a comedic tone i found disgusting too. Obviously Ilsa's death is unnatural. After all, Rebecca wished to leave the MI series, and Tom and Christopher must have somehow used their wits to come up with this scenario for her exit. However, I think they clearly failed in creating a scenario and direction that would make her death seem natural. Her death is clearly "unnatural."...
@mrs.65237 ай бұрын
I did not see any interview where Rebecca Ferguson expressed her wish to leave the series or article that somehow reported her intention, even "by rumors". One may assume that McQ/Cruise simply wanted to change "female lead" and did not bother much how to do it in the movie. McQ said in the one of his podcasts that it was nearly the first scene they had shot in Venice.
@Giovanni-dd6kq6 ай бұрын
@@mrs.6523i have a better idea: no way McQ can be that stupid, That's definitely due to covid delays. No way everyone with eyes would switch Rebecca Ferguson with Hayley Atwell (not even talking about characters cause just to set up a comparision would be insulting). Just look at how disconnected with the rest of the movie the Venice part is, both in plot and atmosphere (it has no impact at all on the plot and seriously looks like a shakespeare parody put by chance into a dull, unfunny and annoying action comedy): Ilsa dies for nothing in the middle of the movie, Ethan cries two seconds, we have a cringe two minutes mourning and then we start again with action comedy as nothing happened, Ethan doesnt even seem to remember she even existed. Also Ferguson and Atwell never appear together on screen. Probably they started out with the idea to make Ilsa die at the end of the movie after having a significant role in the plot, but delays caused schedule conflicts that couldnt be solved and they were forced to come up with a last minute solution, which made the movie totally schizophrenic...just look at Grace: the character (cliché, dumb, useless, deep as a puddle, her only role in the movie is to pull out idiotic moves to slow ethan down and give him excuses to do some stunts that look totally unoriginal, otherwise the plot would be over in half an hour), her senseless role in the movie (we have these keys giving access to unlimited power and everyone knows about them, but americans seem the only ones to chase them; more than that: the CIA should send an entire army of spies to get them but they just sit and ask the white widow to take one for them, and even she doesnt hire a commando like in Fallout, but goes on the internet and contacts a dumb useless thief who wouldnt even be able to steal a bike and is even arrested by italian police (WHAAAAT?). How are we supposed to not laugh our asses off when we see a plot like this? ) and the actress (gran finale of the most awaited spy-action saga of the last decade, 300 millions budget and you werent able to find an actress a little more charming and skilled than Hayley Atwell? Her face is so average and dumb looking, her acting belongs to marvel crap...clearly you chose in a hurry and with a lot of better options already not available because of other projects), everything just screams "remedy worse than disease".
@mrs.65236 ай бұрын
@@Giovanni-dd6kq Look, in the interviews & podcasts, McQ said two things: 1) They decided to kill off Ilsa Faust in the times of TG: Maverick production or even earlier. 2) He was happy to work finally with Atwell as a female lead; they wanted her to be in the MI:RN (but schedules made it impossible) before casting of Rebecca Ferguson. It was said in different interviews (McQ, RF) that the scene of Ilsa-Gabriel fight with Ilsa death was preplanned to be shot as one of the first scenes in Venice location, even before production disruption because of Covid. I mean, there are no solid hints on idea "they started out with the idea to make Ilsa die at the end of the movie after having a significant role in the plot". She had more lines in the first cuts indeed, but they say (somewhere on reddit) that MI:DR editor admitted they cut out fair amount of her lines in the Venice and desert to minimize negative reactions on her death after screens tests. Do not want to comment Hayley Atwell personally. Yours are not fair enough. But, her character so far is much closer to the standard archetype of female co-lead who needs the superhero (even in the mode ‘catch-me-if-you-can). Ilsa, at the end of RN-Fallout duology, was another sort of a character; and that was widely admitted by the fans and critics. Probably, that could be the main reason to kill her off and to put franchise back to center around Tom Cruise heroics only. Man wanted his movie back.

@@mrs.6523 god schedule conflicts saved cinema for once. I dont really want to think how bad Atwell would have screwed Ilsa Faust if casted. McQ is so stupid. I have my personal idea on this: there was a lot of rumours about Ferguson casting in RN, because casting process was already in advanced phase and there were a lot of decently famous actresses looking for the role: Atwell was probably one of them and maybe she was McQ favourite (and that's why directors should rely on casting experts lol). Then Cruise came up with Ferguson (basically unknown, wasnt even a professional actress anymore before 2013, when she got into a decent TV series) out of the blue, just because he saw her in that TV show and was stunned: a lot of rumours said the only reason he casted her for was he wanted to pull out a "Nicole Kidman move" (casting just to give her a try)...she was single (broke up in 2011) and it has been reported various times he compared her to Kidman (ex wife) and Ingrid Bergman (celeb crush), you can clearly see he had some intentions. Mc Quarrie probably didnt like that (in interviews he never speaks good of Ferguson). So what happens next? Ferguson starts ageing and most of all gets married with another man...next movie she gets kicked out of the franchise in a senseless way. Can you see the pattern? Cruise lost interest in her or maybe was even embittered when things didnt go as he planned, so McQ had green light to write off an actress he never liked and replace her with the one he was forced not to cast because of her. That's pretty clear, and pretty miserable too.

Firstly, Ilsa knows how to fight CQC, we saw how effective she was against a bigger opponent in rogue nation. It didn't make sense to me that she'd lose this fight. Secondly, she has the larger blade: bladefight 101 dictates that the a weapon with bigger range should optimize off of it, meaning a safe distance from your opponent puts you at an advantage. Yet she keeps closing in on her opponent and keeps spinning? Probably to keep her eyes on him but she needs to be putting distance to do that effectively. @@Giovanni-dd6kq First of, Ethan instantly beat the Bone Doctor using one simple Drop Kick in Rogue Nation. Meanwhile Ilsa struggled to the Bone Doctor and barely won. The Decoy Lark beating Ethan and Walker at the same time is a testament to his skill and capabilities as a fighter rather than both Ethan and Walker being weak at all. Not only that, if we use the commentary of MI Fallout, Decoy Lark had prior knowledge of Ethan's fighting style and Ethan himself wasn't expecting a vastly powerful opponent whereas Walker himself was simply making himself weaker so Decoy Lark can kill Ethan. There ya go. It's interesting how you brought up Owen Davian from MI 3 when he literally used a device to weaken an already injured Ethan Hunt and at the end of the day, Ethan simply nope to the pain and just focused on killing Davian. Then let's talk about Kagan who's former Mossad and currently a Syndicate Agent which Ethan killed in the end. Yes, Ethan struggled but he wasn't even trying to kill Kagan until the end. In the script of Rogue Nation, he was trying to knock him out so he can tune in Kagan for interrogation. Ethan also beat Sean Ambrose because he was always better than Sean but that doesn't mean Sean is no pushover because he's literally meant to be Ethan's equal and shadow as stated by Swanbeck in MI 2. The reason why Jim Phelps managed to beat Ethan instantly was because Jim is simply a more experienced IMF Agent and literally Ethan's mentor. No wonder Ethan got clapped however if we use current Ethan now, Jim will get clapped. Ethan beating Gabriel is a testament to Ethan's capabilities if he was bloodlusted which you always ignored in your argument. The way I see it, your argument lacks research and simply building false narrative by using certain scenes without context. It's pathetic and sad how wrong you are. What next? And given he doesnt, Ilsa must not kill him (cause he knows where the entity is), knows Ethan is coming and can keep him distant easily since she has a sword against a knife...why is she jumping on him three times instead of fighting in a cautious way to gain time? This would have been a perfect occasion to capture Gabriel, but she fights as if she doesnt give a damn about her own life and not even the mission. @@TheTombRaider i think she's way too silly for my standards, i mean horror movie dumb girls level silly, a thing i really cant stand in a spy movie. With a little of coherence a person like that would die every five minutes in Mission Impossible world, not a coincidence she's constantly saved by pretty annoying plot armour (but obviously Ilsa dies in a minute, with a sword against a knife, against a guy who's beaten easily by Ethan later in the movie, what a joke). I didnt like how they made her a comic relief too, i found it annoying and probably made her look even more stupid: they basically replaced Ilsa and Benji, the two best characters of the saga, with a flat and cliché damsell in distress who has basically no role except doing stupid moves just to give Ethan something to do running after her like a nanny (i'm not a feminist but that's kinda sexist to me: not to mention the woman-cant-drive cliché). Overall i think her character as a whole is totally out of place in a MI movie (keys give world dominance and the CIA should send an army to get them, but they dont even try, they sit back, relax and ask the white widow, who doesnt send a commando, as she did in Fallout for much less, but an average thief found on the internet she doesnt know she can trust, who doesnt seem able to steal a bike and is even arrested by italian police. This doesnt make a shade of sense) and I didnt find her misteryous at all: it's pretty clear from the beginning she's too unexperienced and stupid to be dangerous. And her constantly betraying the only man trying to protect her for no reason made her look bad as a person, stupidity aside. Another thing i didnt like is her entering the IMF: Ethan has known her for two days literally, how can they let people into an elite spy organization so easily? Counter espionage would be a joke this way. And if it's so simple, why Ilsa wasnt let into IMF too? After Fallout she was no more rogue, entering the IMF and the team was the most natural thing to do, but instead we find her alone in the desert, clearly only a bad written excuse to send her away and allow Grace to come up to replace her. Last thing, Atwell is not hot enough for a female lead in a spy movie: most of all she has an average and dumb face i can barely stand. She's okay for Marvel movies, not for spy movies. Movie has a lot of problems, Grace is one of the main ones: other ones are Gabriel (flattest, most stupid and inconsistent villain in the saga: actor is unknown, unexpressive, not charismatic at all, cant even fight decently, big downgrade from Cavill), the entity (too overpowered and sci-fi, acts in senseless ways), Ilsa (she doesnt even seem to be the same character of past movies, they clearly just wanted to write her off for some reason), Benji being criminally under-used, the whole plot making no sense and a lot of situations going on in very very very stupid ways. To me this is clearly the worst movie in the saga.

Why couldnt they give her too a knife? It would have made the fight much more realistic. And why does she get so close, you can definitely hit him without that when you have a sword.. A lot of things are totally impossible: how he can just throw her away like she's made of thin air, how he can deviate that hit at 0:28 (come on lol), how she lost the sword, how she was able to get his knife while left without a blade but then wasnt able to kill him in the opposite situation...they both fight as some jedi who dont give nothing about life (Ilsa even knew Ethan was coming, she just needed to fight in a cautious way and keep distance for a few minutes, she could have easily done it with a sword against a knife...but instead she just jumps on him three times trying to kill him like she's bare handed, makes no sense: and am i right remembering they told before not to kill Gabriel because he knew where the entity was? I guess she just had to die because the script said so lol), except they are just schizophrenic: one moment he is able to keep her away with a pocket knife against a sword, but then he isnt able to kill her when she has not a blade, last she gets his knife like a grand master just to be killed dumbly two seconds later. Gabriel is this way the whole movie: he seems like a mix between a jedi and Nostradamus in some moments, but acts like an idiot in others, kills Ilsa like a grandmaster but gets kicked by Ethan like a punk and cant kill a mosquito by accident for the rest of the movie. Flattest, most stupid and inconsistent villain of the whole saga by miles. Dying against him is so humiliating to Ilsa they should have just let her be killed in the first scene if they needed so bad to write Ferguson off. Probably the worst fight in the whole franchise.

This villain sucked ass and why did he kill Ethans love interest + one of the most interesting female characters? He has no chemistry with the new chick. Like they made her some quirky comic relief character.

No way Gabriel could have killed her so easily,.they write her out..on the train sequence you can tell gabriel is not match for Ethan..although in previous movies Ilsa fouugh Ethan and they were pretty much even on fighting skills..the writers kill her not Gabriel plain and simple..

stupid ending for Ilsa's lfie. I don't mind she died to save Ethan's instead of F**ck stranger theft's life. No more MI for me. What a selfish ending!

Just another proof Tom Cruise's ego is too big. He doesnt care at all about other characters and actors, and that ultimately goes against the quality of his movies, despite the incredible effort he puts into his stunts. Everytime an actor or character is or gets too big he just writes it off to always be the centre of everything: you could see that with Renner and Baldwin in Fallout, Ferguson in DR1 is just the most disgusting and careless version of his general attitude towards secondary characters.

@@Onlygodforgives-sp1gxdon’t really like Tom Cruise as a person, but that’s BS. Renner wasn’t in fallout due to scheduling conflicts with the MCU movies and Baldwin’s character was no more important than Kittridge in MI1 or Lawrence Fishbourne’s character in MI3, yet they were also “replaced”. Also Ving Rhames has been in every movie since the first one and Simon Pegg has been there since MI3
@Onlygodforgives-sp1gx5 ай бұрын
@@ErikCB912 pegg and rhames are comic reliefs, they dont cause any problem to Cruise protagonism and they arent that important as actors. And pegg is a proof too: in Rogue Nation he became an important character, here he's back to be an irrelevant comic relief we see on screen for 10 minutes at best, who really doesnt bring anything to the story and is even annoying at some points. Renner is said to be out for schedule conflicts, no proof of it: and even if that's the case, that's a thing every saga needs to deal with, MI is the only saga which writes off characters so stupidly. And the reason is clearly Tom Cruise lack of care: a very unacceptable thing for a serious franchise. Hunley was a far better and more relevant character than Kittridge and Lawrence to anyone who understands a bit of cinema: and by the way first two MI movies were episodic, it wasnt a proper saga, so Kittridge disappearing was much more acceptable. But even that can be seen as a lack of respect.
