For the big motorcycle stunt, what took me out of it was the entire shot leading up to the jump was CG. Tom Cruise was on his bike, but the wheels and the ground were all CG. When you go back to watch the actual stunt you understand why. The bike was driving on a wooden path and ramp, so it all needed to be replaced. Edit: ent the entity

I agree with Nick about everyone being all sad and depressed in the movie. I didn’t understand their perspective of how this is the “Fallout of Fallout?” They won at the end of Fallout and the ending scene with Julia and Ilsa made me think Ethan accepted Julia is gone and moved on and that he and Ilsa would be together.

I had my hands on the side of my face the whole time That being said. I found it really hard to follow all of the villians' motivations in the thirth act. There are soooo many people on that train that all want different things

Train sequence seemed very drawn out. Crashing through the exact train cart via parachute was just too much. He would’ve splattered on the side of that train. Could’ve wrote it as him landing on top of the train, can’t get his chute off fast enough, drags him cart to cart, then eventually finds Grace in a cart and breaks in.. poor writing. When Gabriel hit the watch/timer, zero chance he could time that 😅 and if he jumped off the train at the that speed into the box truck, he’d ricochet and die immediately. First train cart jump as it fell was so badass, but then they did it 4 more times. Idk

I’m about an hour in so I’m not sure if they touch on this, but Nick mentioned the biblical symbolism of the macguffin but doesn’t touch on the main villain’s name. Gabriel was an angel who served as the messenger of God. That’s the exact role Gabriel plays in Dead Reckoning. He is the messenger for The Entity. It tells him what’s going to happen and how everything is going to play. It makes Gabriel come across as cold and calculating, which for me heightens the impact of that moment at the end when he realizes Ethan took the key. For the first time he shows a genuine emotion because something unexpected happened.

There's something I didn't hear a lot of from the team here. Could totally be because I am way too much of a Mission: Impossible nerd. But, a ton of what happens in this movie seems to me to be based in callbacks. Tom Cruise crashing into the train is a callback to M:I3 when he crashed back into the build while parachuting after first getting ahold of The Rabbit's Foot. The motorcycle jump is, in part, a callback to that ridiculous scene in M:I2 when they jumped off their bikes at each other on the beach. Most obviously, everything with Kittridge was a callback to the first M:I, but (and I could totally be reading into all of this too much) so was the tight alleyway fight because Ethan's partner on that first mission was killed in a small alleyway when the mission fell apart at the beginning. I think it adds a lot that they are calling back to other M:I movies with a lot of this.

The doctor said that because of my high pressure my hearth was doubling double duty and getting those readings. I got medicine and lowered it to normal levels nowadays but was warned if I continued like that there was a big chance I would start getting heart attacks in the next couple of years (getting close to 40) and of course that is dangerous (my heart was a little bruised it seems but was able to get it controlled on time to avoid further damage).

About the guy with the code phrase in the beginning: I think they try to establish later that the people that join the IMF are usually wrapped up in a terrible circumstance where their only option is to join or lose everything, however they are still given a choice. Ethan says something to this effect to Haley Atwell's character later in the film and we see her make the choice. Her actions on the train also showed her inexperience with the IMF protocol/skillset. I'd like to think the man with the delivery may have also JUST made the choice to join, which explains the lack of experience.

That's why he says Ethan is done fighting for "the greater good" when Denliger says the Entity will. Be used "For the greater good" through the gov.
@NF_Redux Жыл бұрын
they did it again. that train sequence & ridiculous car chase, the remixed callbacks to previous MI films, so much running. that said, Gabriel didn't hit with me, very one note, cliche, and i hope that wasn't the end for Ilsa - she's a far better fighter than to go out like that. hopefully she's the ruse the Entity didn't factor into its equations. Grace was a great addition to the team, and loved seeing White Widow again. solid film, in my top 3 alongside Rogue Nation & Fallout.
@alecfigueroa5769 Жыл бұрын
Im hoping/guessing they give Gabriel more development in part two but I thought it was a weird choice to focus so much exposition on the AI aspect of the antagonistic force and not give us any motivation for Gabriel. But I thought he had an excellent presence and enjoyed the scenes he had.
@NF_Redux Жыл бұрын
@@alecfigueroa5769 agreed. it felt like he was forced into the story to give Ethan something personal to go after since the AI is intangible, but the rushed arch-nemesis backstory outta nowhere didn't really hit for me. hopefully they flesh that out & make it more meaningful in Part 2...
@OMGLX Жыл бұрын
Y'know, I wasn't with Nick at the outset, but the more I remembered and was reminded of previous scenes (the hallway bit and hotel room misdirection from Ghost Protocol, the hanging scene from M:I, the underwater heist from Rogue Nation, etc) that I realized I did miss that sort of quiet tension scene in Dead Reckoning. The airport had some of it, but I did miss some levity overall. That said, I still had a great time with the movie, and appreciated the interesting marriage of hyper-modern Rogue AI plotline alongside some throwback cinematography and editing that harkened back to DePalma's original. --SPOILERS BELOW-- I also want to say that I really disliked the fridging of Isla Faust, it felt like the writers truly bent over backwards to kill off a female character so that Ethan Hunt could have a feel. Two female characters, technically, if you count the nameless woman from the flashback scenes that "establish" Gabriel as a villain. I love Hayley Atwell, and do like her character overall, but its not enough to dull the sting of Rebecca Ferguson's loss. Moreover, its such a tired fucking trope that Mission Impossible as a film franchise has leaned on SO MANY TIMES over its 7 iterations. They really need to give their female characters more than just being a damsel or sacrificial chess piece to motivate Ethan Hunt into action. However, I do think the amount of female characters here should be lauded, and I enjoyed all of them for different reasons. Really hope Pom gets to come back in the sequel, because she's just a joy to watch, especially in action scenes. AND... it seems like this duology might actually, finally, be paying off this idea of Ethan Hunt becoming the new IMF Director (who hopefully still does some fieldwork akin to Phelps in the first M:I) and him passing the torch to Hayley Atwell's Grace. I feel like it won't come to pass because its Tom Cruise's baby and I don't see him giving up the reins anytime soon, but if that does truly come to pass, I would give them a lot of kudos for that and would happily come back out to the theater to watch Hayley run a team. ... okay, nobody is reading this anymore, right? Let me get in my duffy right quick, because I wondered if there wasn't another meta-narrative beneath the surface of it all, but I'm very likely just reading too much into things. I WONDER if 'the Entity' is not a sly dig at the idea of AI writing scripts for movies, and it kind of relying on existing data and people's expectation in order to generate a derivative, but familiar, entry in a series. FOR EXAMPLE. The return of Kittridge. The playful sleight of hand with the all-important mcguffin. Ethan Hunt's predictable, almost compulsive, attachment to female companions, especially beautiful brunettes (the nameless woman in the flashback, Thandiwe Newton, Paula Patton, Michelle Monaghan, Rebecca Ferguson (not always a brunette but you feel me), and now Hayley Atwell), fighting atop a locomotive that goes into a tunnel, A FRENCH CHARACTER THAT INEVITABLY BETRAYS SOMEONE (Pom, but also Jean Reno!)... it almost feels like the Entity has seen the other six movies and THAT is how knows what to expect and how everyone will behave. Again, probably super off base, but the thought crossed my mind.

Still dont quite understand the whole party conversation about one of the women has to die and who wants the key for what, and why Rebecca Ferguson had to die. and its a distinct part 1, automatically knocks it down a peg or two for me. I think this movie does suffer a bit from being a part one. When you think of the structure of a typical M:I movie, the first half almost always features the villain being many steps ahead while the team tries to catch up. Many of the super fun, crazy moments that people remember happen when the team starts to fight back and get some victories, and while we did get some of that with the train sequence at the end, most of those moments are gonna be left for part 2 which makes this one less satisfying. However, I still really enjoyed this movie and I feel like it will age super well after part 2 comes out.

It felt like the direction to the actors was to ham it up as much as possible. There were times I laughed not because the movie was trying to be funny, but because of bad delivery or weird blocking (specifically when Gabriel steps away from the railing of the bridge before he fights Hailey Atwel, he steps and then poses awkwardly ). So much tell don’t show with both villains. During the bomb diffusion scene, Bengie says the AI is trying to learn about them and ultimately what it learned is they like their friends? Also, how many times are they going to say “The entity!” They gave zero context to Ethan and Gabriel’s past other than a short flash back, so I felt no shared history between them. The Bike jump was undercut for me because the CGI mountain to hide the ramp was laughably bad it took me out it. By the time we got to the final set piece I was so checked out I couldn’t care less of what was happening on screen. Tim was so right that they were trying to do a modern take on a 90’s movie, and for me, I did not enjoy that. Sorry for the rant, but I just needed to get my thoughts out there. I wish I enjoyed this movie as much as others did. I would definitely rank this under 3 at least, maybe even 1. I hope the sequel can bring me back around, but right now, I’m not looking forward to it.

Agree with all the criticisms, especially the amount of exposition dumps that we get. BUT I still walked away having a really great time. Not without its faults, yes, but still had a wonderful time.

Firstly I really liked the movie, but like Andy said, this was the loudest movie I’ve ever seen. I don’t know if my theatre was poorly set up sound wise, but it damn near blew my eardrums out.

My ONLY complaint although it’s a big one is I wish Ethan’s GF doesn’t have to die for him to emote for 3 mins but then they already had Captain America’s GF on deck to replace her 😂 otherwise perfect action movie 🎥

She wasn't his gf. And movies should have stakes. People should die

I 100% agree with Andy and Nick on this one on the negatives imo. Very happy for everyone who's loving it (wish I did too), but I came out disappointed. Still a fun ride, but too many things felt off for me. I've loved all the films (not 2 lol) previous to this one, but I felt this one was a step down, especially after Fallout. Will be re-watching it next week and we'll see how it pans out. Remember just my opinion and speaking for myself.
