The blu rays always have a special features disc that breaks down the makings of the big stunt set pieces. For the breath hold, Cruise spent several weeks training at the tank with free divers, learning how to do 4-5 minute breath holds. At the beginning, he can hold his breath for about 90 seconds (still better than most of us regular folks), but as it goes on, you see him get up to 3 and 4 and eventually 5.
@julesb1970

Also Kate Winslet reportedly held her breath for seven minutes and 15 seconds on set for Avatar: The Way of Water. Some of the movie’s scenes were filmed underwater. It’s a remarkable feat; anyone (including professional freedivers) would acknowledge that a breath hold over seven minutes is extremely difficult.

The thing with Ilsa's intents... I like how the movie keeps you guessing, like Jack Sparrows intents in the first 2 PotC movies... but with Ilsa she was between a rock and a hard place. Her intents were positive, but she also had to survive being used by both sides long enough to bring her intentions to fruition.

Tom Cruise held his breath for 6 and a half minutes long for the movie back in 2015. He wanted to prove to his cast and crew that it was safe to do. So he proved it. Actors are allowed to hold their breath for 10 - 15 seconds max while filming scenes under water. Years later, Kate Winslet beat out his time with 7 min and 15 seconds while filming Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). This counts as a record-breaker cuz they are actors on-set. I haven't heard of another actor breaking her record on set. It's crazy either way. Mad props to them.

Great reaction, like always this one is one of my favourites MI movies they keep getting better and better and the airplane stunt that Cruise performed himself, without any stunt double or special effects, had him suspended on the aircraft 5000 feet in the air at times. And to capture this scene, a wind-resistant custom frame for the camera was built and mounted onto the wing of the plane. Another problem was keeping Cruise's eyes open in the presence of hard air. So his eye specialist designed a special lens which could cover the entire eyeball. It took eight takes for the stunt to be filmed! This is the only Mission: Impossible film till date where the main villain is not killed off. Keep up the amazing work. You guys are gonna love the next one its EPIC.

31:35 Fun fact, that scene was filmed with NO CGI at all. If you look carefully, how they filmed it was impressive. So the man that's helping Simon Pegg put on the mask is Tom Cruise's double, notice how his face isn't in the camera shot. As it rotates, you see Rebecca Ferguson standing and watching. You can see her reflection in the mirror in the movie but that is her double standing back to back behind the wall. The camera then finishes rotating and you see Tom Cruise in the shot. At 31:39 The real actor that plays the agent that Benji impersonates with the mask is sitting there with the real Tom Cruise. So the camera ends up being behind Simon Pegg's shoulder where it looks like Ethan is helping Benji adjust the mask when in the "mirror reflection" the real actor and Tom Cruise are copying what Simon Pegg and Tom's double are doing. A little bit of camera trickery there and voila, a scene that required no CGI in post-production.

First, with the motorcycle chase, for every take, they basically walked the whole of the road and made sure there was nothing on it, no debris or anything... don't want a wheel to throw a rock, even a pebble, at Tom Cruise at 90 mph. Secondly, Tom was talking to another actor, talked about the Burj building climb, telling the stunt coordinator "This is what I want to do" and they said, "No, there is no way I can let you try that." The other actor asked, "What did you do?" "I found a new stunt coordinator." So, yes, you cannot tell Cruise no about a stunt, just make it as safe as you can.

Funny story, in regards to how does Tom Cruise do his stunts. Matt Damon said in an interview/panel discussion that he asked Tom how he does these stunts. And Tom told him that when they conceived of a stunt once, they brought it to their stunt guy (the person who signs off on it), and when they guy said no, Tom fired him went looking for another stunt guy. Matt Damon's response was that when the stunt guy says no, he doesn't do it. From there everyone in the room had a good laugh over it.

Fun facts : The record for holding a breath underwater is 24 minutes. Freedivers and pearl divers do similar feats (around 11 minutes). When I was younger, the best I could do was five. The three secrets : 1. Hyperventilate. Overfill your blood with oxygen. 2. Exhale. Yes, exhale every so often. Because that O2 becomes CO2 and you don't want that recirculating. And 3. Condition yourself and fight the instinct to breathe. Your body is overfilled with O2. You're ok. Your body just wants to breathe because you do it everyday.

I think there are little hints throughout the series that support Ethan having a photographic memory. He's able to pick up new things really fast, he can quickly draw an accurate portrait, and he can perform complex math calculations, which helps in his ability to succeed at all his physical stunts. Even in the first movie, we see him remember all the faces of the secondary imf team when he's talking to Kitridge, even random faces in the background. So, I believe he could have memorized the numbers.

Him: These action sequences are awesome! Her: can we go back to watching Jaws? That was much less scary.

Just finished watching. This is my favorite of all the film's thus far. The 1st one is my 2nd fave. I grew up watching at times the original Tv show, so when TC revived it into film form, I was giddy!😊 What I love about this one is that TC was like 52 yrs old when he made ( 53 when released if before July), so it's just a huge feat that he just pushes the limits in the movies he does. In watching him going up the steel pole- freaking handcuffed, using only his body strength, I was....like DAAAAAMN! He's the same age I am but I only wish I were in that kind of great shape lol! 😊 Ilsa/RF is basically the female Ethan Hunt, and I loved her addition to the group. 🎉🎉

Tom trained with Free Divers and was able to hold his breath for 6 1/2 minutes. He said...it was no fun. He usually imagines all the stunts. And No Nicki no post elbow jiggling with the speed and stunts. He was going to do a stunt and was talking it over with the stunt coordinator who said oh, that's not doable. He got another Stunt coordinator. 😂

M-I:5 was topsy-turvy to me. Too much to almost handle. I saw this one in IMAX as well. Directed by Oscar-winning writer of The Usual Suspects (1995), Christopher McQuarrie. He also did 2 earlier films with Cruise:writer/director of Jack Reacher (2012) and writer on Edge of Tomorrow (2014); which are both enjoyable. This newer team with Renner coming back as Brandt, introducing Rebacca Ferguson as Ilsa (Doctor Sleep, Hercules) and Alec Baldwin as the CIA boss was pretty good. Meeting the match of a lifetime with The Syndicate. Sean Harris as the leader, Solomon Lane was geniusly sinister. I was listening to Hunt's message at the end of M:I-4 and knew these were the next bad guys. Couldn't wait to see them go mano a mano. Cruise once again, the consumate performer as he is. The stunts (Air, Underwater, on the road) are quite amazing. As the first of 4 sequels that Mr. McQuarrie would direct, y'all ain't seen nothing yet.

FYI - TOM was strapped to the side of the plan for take off, 8 times they did it over and over. INCREDIBLE. he also held his breaths for 10 min or something stupid to do the scenes, after training,

With the holding breath. Tom trained to get up to 6 plus minutes so that he could film the scene but only did like a couple of minutes filming and not all of that is on screen because you have to say action and wait for air bubbles to move out of the way etc plus he is moving more so using oxygen so it cant be 6 minutes

Took me a little while to recognise who the main bad guy/actor is. Can't remember his name but in the Alien film - Prometheus - he was the soldier/worker guy who attacked the ship folded up like a crab.
