I have heard the same about the breath holding records. Kate certainly has the lungs for it (insert drum ba dum tiss). The only clip i saw of kate doing it she seemed to be leaning down into a tank so her face was submerged. I mention this only because i don’t know if either record involved movement. It did not look like kate’s did. No knowledge about TC. Maybe the clip exists.

I love that writer-director McQuarrie starts this movie with a big action scene but ends with a small-scale thriller-type climax. Ethan basically defeats the villain's plan just by talking and calling his bluff. Also, I unironically, absolutely love Baldwin's speech about Ethan Hunt being the "living manifestation of destiny".

I don't love it. I think this is one of the worse ones like 2. Only 1 was a true spy/espionage movie, the rest is just Tom Cruise doing unnecessary stunts and risking his life for no reason at all. At least the stunts in the other ones serve the plot but this one where he clings onto a plane does nothing for the story. Like this whole opening sequence just for him to show off. I never understood his opinion of how using stunt doubles is "cheating". If he had used them, along with CGI and stuff, there are cinematic and post-production techniques to make them look real and the audience would still find the movies just as immersive and enjoying. We buy tickets to watch a movie, not some reality show stunt performances.

@@motherflerkentannhauser8152What you call showing off, the rest of the world calls entertainment, and a big reason why he's able to keep making these in an era inundated with over-the-top CGI superheroes. You need the draw of the Cruise stunt to bring in the numbers to justify these movies and why Paramount keeps backing him. It's plain movie economics. The good old spy thrillers just don't draw audiences to theatres anymore. And yeah, the fact that he's doing them himself is a BIG part of that draw.
@motherflerkentannhauser8152
@motherflerkentannhauser8152 11 ай бұрын
@@AdityaKaul-dm8fk That's why I don't think the recent ones are good movies. When it's taken to the extreme, it's not that different from the other extreme end. This is the same as overusing CGI in those superhero movies: I didn't buy tickets to a live action movie just to see animations half the time any more than I went to movie theatres to watch stunt shows. A good balance would be like Nolan's movies: as real as possible but not marketed around actors endangering themselves. Would I find his stunts "entertaining"? Maybe, but not necessarily in a movie, since then he's not "acting" anymore if he's doing them himself, is he? Everything in a movie should revolve around the plot but if they designed a story just to serve the stunt performances, then it's no longer a movie.
@AdityaKaul-dm8fk
@AdityaKaul-dm8fk 11 ай бұрын
@@motherflerkentannhauser8152 my point is that personal preference aside, there are economic reasons for why these movies are made the way they are. It's like saying I don't like fast food because they're not well made and use cheap ingredients. Yeah, cuz that's how they make it avl to the masses. If you want subtle storytelling and drama, get it from streaming coz you definitely can't afford a Tom Cruise in the modern economy. The millions buying tickets are literally doing it because of Cruise's stunts not the storyline etc. Your one ticket (or mine for that matter) is completely irrelevant.

Ah, yes. Finally the ultimate form of the team’s line-up with the addition of the deadly Ilsa Faust. I think she brings a lot to the team and I think Rebecca Ferguson brings a lot to her portrayal of her. Starting with this film, filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie, co-writer of The Usual Suspects and uncredited script doctor on Ghost Protocol, took over both writing and directing duties. At various times they tried to get both Maggie Q and Paula Patton back, but they were unavailable. Thandiwe Newton, I wouldn't expect to see her return as she said in interviews that she did not enjoy Tom Cruise's working style. I think this is my favorite Mission: Impossible movie to date, because it's the perfect blend of the crazy stunt stuff that starts with 4 and the twisty spy stuff from the original movie, but the next two are still great. I do miss the "revolving door" aspect of the original few films where they changed styles and tones more drastically with each new director, but the results are still so thrilling and fun it's hard to complain. I will also echo everyone who is going to say the character of Ilsa and the meet-up in Casablanca are references that make me hope Casablanca is on the schedule sometime in the future. One of the movies that is well-known as among the greatest movies ever made that truly does not show its age and really feels like it's such a crowd-pleaser it will work on anyone. Plus it will open up a whole new potential avenue of Humphrey Bogart movies to follow-up with.

Casablanca is my pick for the best movie script of all time. It's so ridiculously witty and clever, every line of dialogue just sings. And when you consider that the writers thought they were just making another cheapie, and that they were refining the script on the fly while the movie was shooting...what a miracle of a film.

Strangely, this franchise now has something in common with the "Harry Potter" franchise. There are eight movies starring Harry, Hermione and Ron. There will be eight "Mission Impossible" movies by next summer. In both franchises, different directors made the first four films, but starting with #5 ("Order Of The Phoenix" and "Rogue Nation") the rest are directed by the same person (David Yates and Christopher McQuarrie). Let's hope that when this series is done, McQuarrie will start making "Fantastic Benji and Where to Find Him" spinoff movies!

One thing that's worth noting about the stunt with the airplane at the beginning, although people say it was accomplished "without VFX", this is mostly referring to the fact that they didn't cut to a green screen and point a leaf blower in his face. The sequence DID utilize VFX to paint out the wires and straps that Tom Cruise was attached to. You can see them in the behind the scenes photos. But that doesn't change the fact that he was indeed hanging onto the side of a plane while it was flying and is super impressive. But I find that there's a lot of confusion about the use of VFX in these films and I want to make sure there's a proper understanding of the process involved.

I think the record for holding one's breath on a film shoot went to Kate Winslet for a while, for something she had to do on "Avatar 2." But maybe that's just for lady actresses or something. Margot Robbie had a long underwater thing that she did herself in something or other and when asked about it she kind of downplayed the whole thing. She said it was something anyone could train themselves to do and blew it off as no big deal in the interviews I've seen. Apparently your body fights to take a breath at a certain point and it almost becomes irresistible, but at that point you still have a certain amount of air in your system so the trick involves recognizing and overcoming the automatic impulse to breathe in so you can function underwater for that much longer. It's not necessarily easy, but it's do-able. Not sure I wanna try it myself, but I found that interesting. Rebecca Ferguson's rather good. 😍

Hello beautiful people! Here comes unnecessary information: About 22:15 suffocation mechanic the larynx (throat) moves like an elevator up and down like a pump. And keep pressuring inside the air molecules through the lungs. So after suffocating process ends over person dies and water can penetrate from the mouth.

I think TC is one of the last true actions stars we have left. A few movies ago he created his own production company for his movies solely because he wanted free reign to do whatever stunts he wants. He can’t get told no to himself.

Has George ever NOT made a face of deep confusion after Simone's opening "Welcome to..." bit?

I think this is my favorite one. Last one like you mentioned, seemed difficult to figure out how bad the bad guy was (but it began the global enemy for the rest of the series). This one established a more continuous storyline and pillar characters for the future. Good stuff. Looking forward to your reaction to Fallout. 🙂

Fun fact: Tom Hollander is actually Tom Holland's brother. They're both scions of a billion-dollar Hollandaise sauce empire based in Holland.

Well done, George. I didn’t think anyone could wear that dress better than Rebecca Ferguson.

this is my personal favorite, a large reason being the introduction of Rebecca Ferguson's character. Altho the name Ilsa Faust is a little hammy, her role in the film is a great foil to Ethan's plans
