That's literaly how I play every level since I discovered it works great and I think it makes the game massively easier. Generally people plant just two rows of sunflowers at the back and then forget about them which is insane. First of all, losing a sunflower you can instantly replace is much better than a hole in your defense that you will need to patch. Secondly, and I can't stress this enough, you should keep planting them everywhere! They pay for themselves extremely fast and then they are a free body that produces sun.
