Yeah, I’ve gotta disagree with Dave on the score for Mission To Mars. I think Ennio Morricine did a spectacular job! Much of that score for me was so wondrous. “A Heart Beats In Space” and “A Martian” are both just musical elegance for the ears! Outstanding. There are also some pieces from the Red Planet score that I really enjoyed as well.

I'm reminded of the scene in Apollo 13 where Bill Paxton and Kevin Bacon start arguing over whether Bacon screwed up. The situation was more than tense enough for that sort of thing, but in reality it didn't happen. Astronauts are the type who focus on the mission and don't let their emotions run away. Any trip to Mars will be orders of magnitude more dangerous with more time for things to go wrong than a moon mission. Any discord could mean death.
@ProjectKhopesh
@ProjectKhopesh 10 ай бұрын
Indeed. That's why I can never really get into these sorts of movies. The drama is ridiculous and the science is shameful. That said, there *was* apparently a sociopath American astronaut on board the ISS, so... standards have slipped a bit since the Apollo days.
@joelellis7035
@joelellis7035 9 ай бұрын
The argument scene was created to emphasize the tension the astronauts were feeling. The actual communications depicted the Apollo 13 astronauts as consumate professionals, but in reality, they were battling sleep deprivation, cold, hunger, thirst, and the stress of being on a knife's edge over whether they'd make it back at all.

Fun fact: Kilmer and Tom Sizemore began feuding during production. According to reports, it all began when Kilmer got annoyed about a fancy exercise machine that Sizemore wanted shipped from England to the set in Australia. Eventually the two hated each other so much, Kilmer would not come out of his trailer if Sizemore was on the set. Many of their scenes together were filmed over the shoulders of photo doubles. Kilmer reportedly refused to say Sizemore's character's name, saying instead "Hey, you!" At one point, they got into a confrontation that escalated into them throwing weights at each other until Sizemore knocked out Kilmer with a punch to the chest. (At a crewmember's request, he avoided Kilmer's face). The two have never worked together again....

I remember seeing both films and liking Red Planet much more. I've seen Red Planet a few times since, but have never rewatched Mission to Mars. You've made me want to revisit that film at least one more time. I really enjoyed the Docu-Drama Series from National Geographic called "Mars". It was great. Season 1 was about getting to Mars to setup a colony among interviews with scientists, researchers, etc. Season 2 was about the living on Mars years after Season 1. Unfortunately, both seasons were very short and the show did not continue.

Hi Dave. Thanks for revisiting these films. Not cinema gems or classics by any means, but certainly much better than films like The Wizard of Mars, but oddly not as fun as The Angry Red Planet or Robinson Crusoe on Mars. In case you haven't seen it, one Mars film that I have enjoyed, even though no one actually visits the planet is Red Planet Mars (1952). If you haven't seen it, you might find it interesting. Since you shared your personal Mars story, I thought I'd share this tidbit from the past. A program I worked on in conjunction with NASA and Nickelodeon. It was basically a Star Trek parody that had an educational component. Teachers were supposed to record the program on VHS when it aired at 5:00 am on Nickelodeon and then show it to their class, except for the portion reseved for the teachers. There were at least eight different episodes in the series. The link below is an episode on the Inner Planets. This episode included a segment called "The Angry Red Planet" as a tip of the hat to the aforementioned film. The KZbin link to the episode is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmW1ipaOntx-bLMsi=wIJijevGLJB_nt53 Thanks, Dave.

Making a movie is hard work. A friend of mine and I made one in 2009, and it was a financial loss. Shooting was fine, but getting it edited, getting music, and ADR was a real pain. We thought we lost it when our camera person just stopped contact. Fortunately, 3 years later, we got the footage and audio, and my co-director edited it. He used generic music from his editing software, and it got a few copyright strikes for the music. So, he adjusted it again and put it on DVD for everyone in the film. It's a ride man.

Well, now we know that Mars is a barren rock that will never be terraformed or in any way become suitable for life. It's ironic that any colonization attempt will end up even worse than any movie predicted.

Thank you for your expierence. :-) I was a kid in Germany and loved a radio play cassette. It was about SETI. I was so fascinated that I wrote to NASA. Months later, I received large illustrated books with information about SETI and also a book with information about the space shuttle. I still have them - it's been at least 35 years.

Red Planet is like The Core, in that they are both guilty pleasure movies. They aren't good by any means, but I just enjoy them for some reason. The Martian is probably my favorite movie that involves Mars.

The core is 100000 times better than Red Planet, sorry ..... It is a good B Movy (with A Movy budget). But mutch better than "The walk through a dessert" Red planet thingi.

The whole phenomena of multiple movies around the same theme was just a studio cash grab to try (and invariably fail) to cash in on the success of a better movie that came first. Troy and Alexander, both trying to emulate the success of Gladiator, neither of them coming near to how good that movie is, and they were the best of the rest. Some times it works, like the '90s gangster genre, where you end up with Goodfellas, Heat, Reservoir Dogs, Lock, most of the time you end up with Ghosts of Mars. The irony of mission to mars though is they tried to cash in on the Martian conspiracy theories of the late '90s, and by the time these movies got released, the entire fad was over and everyone had moved on. It's still the better movie thought.

TROY was excellent, and GLADIATOR was junk (as was ALEXANDER) - Ridley lost it as soon as he started the slow-motion camera in the Germanic forest, and things went downhill from there, to a limping finale.

Dave, the story about your after-college experience and writing NASA, then filming, and getting to meet some of the NASA Personnel is so freaking cool! Thanks for shariing! P.S. RIP to Bobby Fae. She sounds like she was an absolutely awesome person!

Mission to Mars was always my movie. Probably a nostalgia thing due to how hyped I was as a kid to see it in the cinema. Plus that horrific tornado scene at the start.

Holy crap. The Mentalist was in Red Planet. I had no idea. Then again, I had no idea he was in L.A. Confidential either until a couple of weeks ago. I guess that's what happens when you only watch a movie once and then a couple of decades go by.
