Love it. The strip I want to show you is just over this ridge..... "I think!" Then over the ridge at 500 AGL per Betty. Then, "pull up, pull up", then "Thank You." All that after a takeoff where "wow, we are really heavy today" that took most of the runway. All of it is serious bush piloting and you did great with it all. What an adventure. Thx Ryan.

That was about 2k lbs, decent load for sure. I tend to wonder what the numbers show for take off roll out of these sloped strips. I have operated out of a rather notorious sloped strip near Carmacks Yukon in single otter. Can't remember the name but it was close to Casino strip if anyone is familiar? Anyway, my feeling was that the slope did not reduce the take-off roll but would appreciate hearing what Ryan thinks.

Great video and so informative.. Love the mountain top strip with down hill take off and uphill landing. Very thorough glimpse of what it takes to be a pilot in far off horizons. Brings back memories of working as a property valuer for 6 weeks in the Highlands from Goroka down to the Markham Valley for Danny Leahy - the true gentleman of Highlands. Your flight reminded me of mine from Mt Hagen to Karawari Lodge in the East Sepik on the grass strip beside the river in 1977. Fascinating country and culture. Back to Goroka again in 1981 plus Lae and up the Markam valley by 4WD to the coast and along a crushed coral road up the coast, to Madang and then canoe to Siar Island to stay in huts with the locals. Beautiful country. Challenging conditions for pilots with mountains and changeable weather. Lost my uncle as a squadron leader pilot of a Beaufort Bomber on a mission out of Aitape on the north coast in 1945, with faulty munitions - to bomb the Japanese on 1945, 8 years before I was born. Stay safe...

Ryan, Top video & a very informative one, it's good that people can learn a lot about P.N.G from your flights around the mountains & coastal regions. Back in the 60s with the lack of roads all cargo flew in aircraft all over the country. The locals went from walking to flying in such a short period of time, and today they still walk. Time means nothing to them. I still call the highlands of P.N.G the last frontier. Thank you for the memories & another great ride.

This flight reminded me that there's very few roads between villages in PNG, people walk up and down mountains between communities. It's the ultimate last frontier of simple ways of life. Years ago I was caught up in a big 'Chevron Oil' opening a oil well celebration at Lake Kabutu. There was a giant Sing Sing and locals walked for weeks to come to the event. I was there doing a Fireworks display and many locals there had never seen fireworks before. It was totally wild, so exciting and something i'll never forget. Your videos bring back so many memories of air travel in PNG. I often wonder if the oil is still being drilled at Lake Kabutu. It seemed sad to put a oil well in the highlands that were pristine jungle. A big transporter aircraft arrived in the early morning every second day. Everything at this location was brought in by air, staggering how it was all done to get oil in a really remote far away place. A oil line was put through the jungle to the coast to load onto ships. I was there in the early 90's, I wonder if this oil facility is still pumping oil.

Hi Ryan, your footage is brilliant. I was based in Menyamya ( VSO 1988) and was lucky enough to hike from MYY up to Simbare village with a lad from Eastern Highlands. Three day hike, with many improvised bridges over rushing rivers. Came across the grim reminders of how damgerous PNG is for pilots... fusilage of ancient crashed cessnas Unbelievable experience to get a chance to visit Simbare Village and sleep at such high altitude in a bush material house with central fireplace...Once had an emergency flight from MYY to Moresby for a seriously infected toenail which gave me the belief that lignicane is just about the single best chemical known to mankind. Loved the occasional internal flights to Tawa (also hiked it) and Aseki. Mi bin istap tupela yia wantaim ol sumatain bilong vocational skul klos tu MYY airstrip, na mi lainim tokpisin. 30 years on and I'm sure that the balus brings the only connection to the coast, because the road that used to be used by PMV trucks got you to Lae in 6 hours is hardly passable these days due to massive washouts and landslides. Please keep posting these awesome videos...and fly safely out of these tiny places loaded with 850kg of KOFI!!

Happi noon won tok, I had to laugh to myself reading your tok pisin. I was a VSO in Moresby 74_76 and stayed on till we went finish in 79. But to cut a long story short my wife was to chaperone some Anglican sisters from the Solomon Islands while they were staying in Ely. They were with some Melanisian brothers who were on a fund raising tour of the UK. On arrival the brothers unloaded the cargo from the coach. Then time for supper and relax , the guys were chatting away in pidgin.there was the normal moans and groans about all the traveling and so on.It came time fore to leave them and go home . Said my good byes to my wife. Looked over to the brothers and said to them luk I'm yu behind. The look on their faces was a picture.they realised I understood most of their conversation.

Wow! Ryan sceneries are captivating. I flew in a MAF plan that serves the interior regions of the Indonesian island of East Kalimantan from Long Bawan to Malinau. On our return trip the young pilot led us in a short prayer before we took off. Seated just nxt to him I could see the calmness and peace he had as he maneuvered the tiny aircraft through thick morning clouds. He found a gap between the clouds where he could view the ground and mountains ahead. The nxt thing I knew we were approaching the runway. I realised then that we were flying rather low. God bless that pilot, from DC. And not forgetting your team Ryan, the Bush Pilot?

Great as usual Ryan. Loved the valley dipping! Way back too many years ago we were taught that always the yoke controls airspeed and power controls altitude and that was for any time in the flight. That was a bit counter intuitive for some but most got the hang of it pretty quick.

I spent a fair bit of time in the area bordering the southern gulf and highlands, flying (as a passenger, not pilot) in and out of a village called Wabo, on the Purari river. Gotta love matching up something from history to modern times..... You are very lucky to get to grow up with all the WWII vets... I was just a young kid in 1991 getting to talk to one of the gunners on the USS Ward, that ship fired and sunk a IJN mini sub hours before the air attack at Pearl... Then 2000 they found the mini sub sitting on the bottom in the harbor with a UAV..... What a site to get to see.. (best thing I can relate to the awesome gift you got to know the vets)

@@jonathanbair523 The WW2 vets I knew were truly some of the best men and ladies I've ever known in my life. My Grand Father fought in Germany and Russia and came back a very different man due to what he saw and had to do. I have his oval dog tag he wore. (a treasure to me) Seeing that mini sub they found was pretty haunting in a way. Those guys knew it was a 99.9% one way trip. It's good you had the chance to speak with a gunner from the USS Ward and that you appreciated that chance. I'm a silver/gold smith and gem cutter and was taught gem cutting by a great man that was a WW1 and WW2 veteran. (He was my neighbor) The things he saw and did we would talk about on and off during the time he was teaching me. He would take a WW2 jeep he got after the war and go out mining and searching for gemstones. I think it was his escape, a way he found solitude. I've never forgotten the gift and skill he taught me and often think of him when I'm working. Many of the vets I knew from WW1,WW2, Korea, Vietnam are why I live the life I do today. In a way I live the dream so many of them had as a way to honor them. Sorry this is long.. heh heh.. It's a deep subject. All the very best to you now and in life.
