I'll always be grateful for the doors and windows that were opened to me for singing "His Eye is On the Sparrow" with The Mississippi Children's Choir. It all started because I was about nine years old. I was outside singing to the grass at home in Danville, Illinois. I was always giving concerts in the yard and the blades of grass represented my audience lol. My next door neighbor was always listening to me sing. She had a relative that worked at Malaco Records. She sent that person a tape of me singing and Malaco sent for me to come down to Jackson, MS and audition to sing with the choir.
I actually didn't know that's what was happening. I thought that I was just taking a trip and singing for some people I never met before lol. So, when I met with the people at Malaco; they said, ` sing something.' So, I started singing "His Eye is on the Sparrow" the way that my mother Sheila Wilson taught me to sing it. I guess they liked it because they then had Jerry Smith arrange the song based on the way I sang it and they taught the children's choir to sing it.
It was recorded at the Callaway High School Auditorium. Jerry Smith was on acoustic piano, M. Thurston Cox on electric piano, and David R. Curry on organ. The choir director was Dorcus Thigpen. I don't think any of us had any idea how big the song would become. There were no downloads in those days, so people bought the whole album. The "A New Creation" CDs and cassettes sold around 100,000 copies which was incredible for an unknown act to do. I was unknown and the children's choir was not well known nationally at the time but Malaco made us all known in that time period.
What's even more amazing is that this song is still earning a couple of million KZbin views and digital streams every year. I think the streams are somewhere over 20 million at this point. So, there you have the story behind this particular version of "His Eye is on the Sparrow."
If you enjoyed that, I hope you'll take a listen to some of my current music because I think it's good too (smile). Here are some of my current favorites:
