Mississippi Pastor Dubbed ‘Flying Preacher’ Glides Into Christmas Service

The Mississippi man known as “the flying preacher” has gone viral after video showed him floating above his congregation over the weekend. Pastor Bartholomew Orr, of Brown Baptist Church in Southaven, has been using the flying apparatus equipment for several years for Christmas services. On Sunday, he made his debut as “the flying preacher” when he decided to give it a try himself. “I just had to get up the nerves to get into the harness,” he told Inside Edition. #InsideEdition

I’m a pastor and I have really mixed feelings about this. I think it’s done with good motive for an intentional laugh from the audience, but it’s really not funny when you think of the struggling family who put their tithing into the offering to see it be used for essentially a joke. I think it’s pretty disrespectful to use money from the saints for actions like this.

In my opinion, people should analyze it from the logical point of view of Christ! What would Jesus think of that? This pastor could be spending that money on the poor communities, but instead, he chose to massage his ego and entertain the fools. The focus should be the word and not the pastor's antics! But at the same time, this is not as bad as some pastors who have completely trampled the gospel and embraced the deceiving perception of inclusiveness. God accepts the sinners as long as they decide to abandon their sins.

Yes, I'm a black man myself, and yes, I grew up in a black church, but I haven't been in my hometown church in 3 years, and really lost all my desire for it as I got older. I may be still 25 years old, but I'm not passionate about my hometown church anymore. I want to go to a church where it's more peaceful, laid-back, quiet, and calm, not some chaotic dramatic circus where a pastor talk 4-6 hours.

You're right. Any spiritual leader should not charge money to teach people about God. Why? Because Jesus never did that, and he told his followers to imitate him. Matthew 10:8, "Cure the sick, raise up the dead, make lepers clean, expel demons. You received free, give free." Now obviously for any place of worship to keep running you need to pay the bills and do maintenance on it. So yes you need donations. But nobody should ever force you to give a certain amount. 2 Corinthians 9:7, "Let each one do just as he has resolved in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." No 10% of your income, no putting a collection basket in your face. You should just go and give what your hearts tells you, and when you're able to. And like I've said before, this type of stunt is disrespectful. Because when you go to church you're going to learn about God, to praise him, not to have fun. Now it can be fun to learn about God, but this is another type of fun. This fun is taking your focus away from the message and centering it on him. What's everybody talking about right now? What he was saying in his sermon or his stunt? Something to think about.
