madeleineswann.... Here are some creepy (in the best way) vintage coin operated machines from Battlesbridge Antique Centre. Includes an execution! Imagine you're at the seaside in the 1920s looking for fun and amusements.

I feel sorry for the jaundiced Victorian fortune teller at 1:24 because she instinctively *knows* the first successful liver transplant won't take place until 1963 so she has no chance getting on the NHS waiting list.

I understand "The Laughing Sailor" was much more popular than "The Bored Sailor," who generally just shrugged and let out a heavy sigh once every 15 seconds.

Then there was the "Violent Sailor" but his knife kept breaking the glass.

These are amazing. I wish I could see the shop where they were made.

I'm sure the Imperial War Museum used to have some of the 'haunted house' style ones in the early 80s.

Same idea as "Sophia" robot now - moderately coordinated movements with associated noises that we see and hear as if meaningful but devoid of all intention and intelligence. Still fun though. But Sophia is NOT.
