This makes so much sense. I had a very pot bound oncidium and it was doing sooo well last summer. My first orchid I didn't kill within the first month. Went to repot it and didn't cut off all the dead roots, and made the mistake of not soaking it first. Now it looks like a prune with no good roots and the thing is fighting for its life. But now I can calm down knowing that dehydration isn't atypical and it can pull through knowing im doing what I need to now!

I just had to notice that the tiny "oxalis triangularis" ground cover is also growing in the pot!! Small green clover-like leaves, which sends out cute yellow flowers - and is my favourite ground cover. I keep them!! My oncidium is still in its infancy stages, so this video is a keeper for when repotting comes around.

You always come out with videos just as I need them. I have an extremely pot bound Sharry Baby that I have to repot. It just now has new growths. It has over 12 psuedobulbs it is a huge orchid. I will be splitting this orchid into three different sections. I am giving two sections away to friends. I just haven't had the chance to do it until now. I also have a few other oncidiums that are pot bound. I just potted them last April. It hasn't even been a year yet. But they all have new growths so I am doing it now. Thanks again for a great video❣

luckily, I don't encounter that kind of issue, but here in Philippines, dendrobium or cattleya orchids were potted in a coconut husk and clay pot. and the setup is often infested with bush snails and that thinking of repotting is is a hastle 😢, but I like that you've address the issue of root bound orchids, I'd rather repot those in spring or summer.

I have a phal that is starting to fill the entire pot with its roots and it seems to be growing even more roots at an extreme rate. I'm unsure if I should repot it now or later because it has 2 growing spikes that already have some unopened buds. I heard repotting can cause bud blast. But if I don't repot until the spikes are done blooming, I'm sure the pot will be 99% roots. Any advice?

Hi Danny! I have a question that I’m hoping you’ll answer in your short videos 😊 (wasn’t sure if there’s a better place to post this question). I keep hearing that paphiopedilums are semi-terrestrial, so why is it that people don’t seem to plant them in regular potting soil? For example, would they survive in the same soil you use for your jewel orchids? Thanks!

There's a poor cymbidium at the mall near where I live that is so insanely rootbound, they're spilling severely out the top of the pot. What do you think about damp sphagnum moss when you buy it? I can only find it this way, in a sigilated bag and preety wet. Most of it I think is alive. How would you store this bag when it arrive to you? Should you try to dry it for keeping it for a long-term until you use it? Also, what about those old pseudobulbs that you removed? Did you try to propagate?
@MissOrchidGirl

I have a question to do with reusing potting medium from a pot that was inhibiting orchid growth. When I was starting out, I used some pots that caused my orchids to not grow and have black root tips, leading me to conclude that something inside the pot was poisoning my orchids. I since repotted those orchids in different plastic pots, but I left the bark and moss they used to be planted in inside the toxic pots. Now, I want to repot some of those orchids, but the majority of my current bark supply is still inside the toxic pots. Do you think I could safely reuse that bark to repot some orchids if I rinsed off the bark before doing so? Thank you!
@iregongon
@iregongon 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert but I never reuse organic media (like bark or sphagnum), specially if it's over a year old. This is because the media eventually breaks down, and you expose the plant growing in that media to broken down components and an increasiingly acidic environment (like REALLY low pH). A good rule of thumb is to repot once a year and dont reuse the media in the pot, specially if the plant requires moist conditions, as that accelerates the decomposition process even faster.

So I work at a big box store... and I am trying my hand at saving my first 2 orchids ever.... one has leaves that are very transparent!! Some roots were completely dry and some seem okay... should I treat with peroxide to help the transparent leaves?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, transparent, or rather translucent leaves can be a sign of a bacterial infection. It can be quite tricky, but I would first remove the affected areas and then treat with hydrogen peroxide. Keep the upper part (everything but the roots) of the orchid very dry after. Here is what I think you are dealing with www.plantdiseases.org/bacterial-soft-rot-orchid here is a similar case I had kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZ6Wn2aqqN1sf6c but of course you can google for more treatment ideas. Good luck!

@MissOrchidGirl

haha well.. they are pretty well behaved, but there is some degree of cleaning up and making sure they don't reach any toxic plant. Other than that I don't mind if they eat a bud or a flower on occasion, it's what they do 😆 there are times when they have to stay in the cage for their own protection, like at night when it's dark in the room, or when I am not home for hours. They don't mind, most of the times they sit on their nest :P

Do you maybe already have a video on sequential bloomers or could you make one in the future? I haven't found a lot of good information online as to which orchids are sequential bloomers and I end up finding out accidentally (for instance, in one video you have on psychopsis I heard you mention it or after I bought a pinocchio paph I found out by accident). I'd be happy to have sort of a comprehensive list of which orchids one can expect to bloom sequentially. I think a lot of people might enjoy that if you feel like doing it some time in the future :)

I have heard that this mix is not good for the orchids. It burns the roots. It may have way to much fertilizer in the mix. You are best with sticking to just plain bark and/or sphagnum moss. I live in NJ, and I use the same mixture as MissOrchidGirl and it works wonders. Then just add the fertilizer separately. So you have control over how much is being used. Another youtuber did a review of miracle gro orchid mix and she said the same thing.
