Catasetum orchids are a very rewarding group of orchids, easy to care for and fast growing, particularly good for those of use with no patience :) here are some basic culture tips to properly grow these orchids.
The most important aspect of their culture revolves around the res period, time in which the orchid loses its leaves and becomes inactive. During this period the orchid doesn't need as much water, if at all, doesn't really require light either and certainly no fertilizer. usually the rest comes in the winter time, after the blooms fall.
In spring the orchid usually comes out of dormancy and starts to produce new growth at the base of the last pseudobulb produce, although old backbulbs can produce new growth as well. At this time it is best to repot the orchid into fresh media, before the roots of the new growth start to appear, thus the risk of damaging them is reduced.
Watering should be resumed gradually as the roots grow and start to absorb water. The roots need to be about 10 cm long before watering is resumed.
In summer time, or the growing period, the orchid needs to stay constantly moist, benefit from a lot of fertilizing and needs bright light and warm temperatures. The growth rhythm is accelerated and usually the pseudobub completely matures in about 6-7 months. It is said that bright light can promote female flowers, while less bright light can induce male flowers. I don't have enough experience to say this is true or false.
At the end of summer or in the fall, the Catasetum orchid will start to produce a flower spike from along the newly produced pseudobulb. Depending on the species or variety, the leaves might start to fall at this time as well. The orchid will prepare for its dormancy and the cycle is repeated.
Some catasetum hybrids or species have great fragrances, while others have magnificent flowers. In any case, they are certainly well worth a try!

That was a great video. I've watched a few on the American Orchid Society website and there is a man who has a Catasetum nursery in Southern California and he says that if you use pure sphagnum moss to use a layer of packing peanuts on the bottom of the pot for aeration, because they really like air to the roots as well.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 жыл бұрын
+Jacquelyn Clement ofcourse I know Fred Clarke I think any serious grower knows him :) while I respect all orchid experts a lot, I have to disagree with that ;) oh this is a great discussion for casual sundays. ok so the packing peanuts, leca beads, stones or whatever non water retentive media you add at the bottom is there to prevent stagnant water from clogging the bottom of the pot. This happens due to gravity, water is pulled down right? well, sphagnum moss is so water absorbent that you will probably never have standing water at the bottom, I make a demonstration here kzbin.info/www/bejne/ane4paKZnKmDo7c so packing peanuts are not needed with full sphagnum moss, it just absorbs the water and distributes it evenly throughout the pot.. as I say in my video, ventilation is required throughout the pot, orchids don't love packing peanuts, they love ventilation ;)

Hi, I have a Catasetum (Ctsm Pileatum x Ctsm fimbriatum) that I purchased in May 2018. When I got it, it had a new growth starting and it developed ok until it stop. It´s been the same way for some months now and I don’t know if it’s normal or if I’ve been doing something wrong. The backbulb is 6cm long, and the new one is 5cm and has 6 fragile slim leaves. It’s been potted in bark, a mix proper for orchids, that we have here, some type of leca different form your’s, and I have rocks on the bottom of the pot to help with drainage. The pot has a lot of holes on the bottom and around it. I fertilize all my orchids with Guanferty. I live in the Azores, the temperature here is between 15 and 19 degrees Celsius (at the moment), our humidity is almost always between 80% and 90 something%. My grow space has 5 lamps with 4w led lamps and a ceiling lamp (that I don’t know the watts), I also had 2 windows that receive bright ligh almost all day (but not direct sunlight), and I leave one of the windows open all day long (for fresh air). I grow lots of different orchids in the same space and they do fine (phals, paphs, bletilla, ludisia, catt, miltonias, miltoniopsis, onciduns…., brassia, catt and lealia seedlings, zygopetaluns, brakeria, dendrobiuns, cochleanthes…..). If it helps I can post the before and now photos on your facebook page. P.S.- the Ctsm came from Spain. Thanks for any help you can give me!

Please help! I have a catasetum with a keiki growing higher up on the bulb, not from the bottom. It's roots are long and beginning to reach the medium. Should I remove it and repot it on its own? It's roots are beginning to dry and we are coming into Fall and dormancy. Thank you!
@southpark4151
@southpark4151 5 жыл бұрын
At 10:35, the plant has well-formed roots and what appears to be a single new root. So, after dormancy, it's ok to cut off dead roots, right? In nature, nobody is around to remove the dead roots. So just wondering if it's possible to have growing conditions where there's no need to remove dead roots.

Hello! Thank´s for a fantastic channel! I have a small problem and I thought you colud know the answer to it: I bought 3 small near flowering size catasetum hybrids from ebay. They all stayed 1 week in transport and when they arrived the leaves were almost totoally yellow on atleast one of the plants. Rootsystem looked ok and quite plump bulbs. Normally they would be in flowering-season right now so my question is: Are they prematrurely reaching dormancy so I shall quit watering them or is it due to damage at the transport or climate changes on their way here?? I dont want to kill the plants! //Best regards K

Thank you for this great video! I've been doing well with a very small, not yet blooming size catasetum, and decided to buy a larger one today! It has no leaves anymore, but it has flowers - so, how much should I water it? And when you say you give catasetums in full dormancy "a little water," what does that mean? Does that mean you mist it? Give it a quick spray from the faucet? I'm really scared to over-water! Thanks!!!!!
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 жыл бұрын
+rocketwidget1 Hi, about your blooming catasetum, just water enough to keep the pseudobulbs from shriveling too much. I think at this point it will not consume too much water as it isn't growing, but the flowers still drain a bit of energy. So just look at the pseudobulbs and when you see them getting some visible wrinkles, just run water for a second or two through the pot, just for a light watering :) about the dormancy again I just look at the pseudobulbs, if they get very shriveled I just spray the pot to get at least the top moist, or just run water for a second or so under the faucet. Hard to explain but I will be sure to make a video on it I think it will show better what I mean :) All you want is to dampen the media, not properly soak it. Hope this helps though!

Hi, the pseudobulb will grow on its own during a season, but it needs a lot of water and fertilizer to do so. So the proper care will determine how big the new pseudobulb will be in comparison to last years's growth :)

a Catsetum grower told me (which I did) when I see the orchid starts to shrivel during dormancy it actually helps the next bulb grow..
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 жыл бұрын
+Guillermo Bustamante well... that doesn't sound convincing to me lol so whenever you're in doubt, ask logic: so, the psb stores moisture and nutrients (sap, energy, fuel). When it creates the new growth it consumes this moisture, that is why it is shriveling fast. If you let it shrivel waaaay too much without replenishing the fuel, how can the pseudobulb bring its new growth to the point of maturity in which it will make roots of its own? or at least it might take longer than it should and it will struggle and deplete. So I would just give a little spray if the mother psb goes dramatically shrivel, just to be sure everything goes according to plan. If the mother psb has roots that is ;)

Hi, no worries, catasetums are one of those orchids that don;t need 3 psb per division, they can be successfully propagated and grown with only one. This is something I read about them, never had the chance to experiment it myself but I will actually :) but I would say no worries, your orchid is ok :)

@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Catasetums don't really need cool downs, just let it grow, water it as it grows and when it stops growing, reduce water. Stop watering when leaves fall and resume when new growth (new psb) starts growing multiple roots, of a few cm long. Don't over think it 😉

Hello Danni. I'm thinking of getting one. but I do have a few questions. does the old bulb produce leaves again and with the dead roots should they be cut off. as you can tell I know absolutely nothing about them.Hahaha. and if the old bulb does not produce leaves should it be cut off?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 жыл бұрын
+johnnysmartin64 hello, the older pseudobulbs don't grow leaves anymore, these orchids are deciduous so once a year, before dormancy, they will lose all their leaves. About the old roots, some people leave some on, some people cut the older roots totally. I just noticed that the older roots don't last all that much and they die in the following year, you can see this here kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWqwkKqibb15lc0 so it is up to you, I decided to cut all the old roots this year :) even if the old pseudobulbs don't make leaves anymore, they are very important for the plant as they store energy so don't cut them :) I think with every orchid it's the same, never cut pseudobulbs unless they are rotting or they are yellow and dry :) hope this helps, let me know if there is anything else you'd like to know :D

Hi :) I have tried to find the answer to this on google but can't seem to find it. One of my Orchids get soaked for about 15 minutes same as the others but by day 2 of being soaked the roots are all already light green. This orchid is in a painted clay pot not a plastic one like my other orchid. The one in plastic has dark bright green roots so I know theres a difference. I just dont know If I should soak the orchid whos roots turn white in 2 days every 3 days or actually wait 5 days to soak again ... hope this makes sense!
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 жыл бұрын
+Oscar Mejia well I am presuming you are referring to Phalaenopsis orchids :) well, some pots dry faster than others, depends on the amount of roots, media, size of the pot etc. If you don't know when to water it, water when the media is dry. if you are not sure when it dries, insert a finger in the media a few cm deep ad you will know ;) the pot can dry after 2 days or 10 days it's not a rule to dry like the others do

I water all of my plants and soak all of my orchids in fish tank water, but want to know, if it is ENOUGH fertilizer for the FDK. Pls and thank u. I appreciate all of your knowledge u share :)
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I really don't think so. A very well kept tank never actually has much excess nutrients, since the plants absorb them. A non planted tank might have too much of something and nothing of the others. An unhealthy tank can have toxins that will also affect orchids. In my opinion no matter the case, aquarium water is not a substitute for fertilizer, I wouldn't hassle and just use a dedicated fert, much easier to administer a full menu as well! 😉

The plant that came is mature and has about 3 new pseudobulbs growing but it is not yet in bloom. I visited the one and only orchid nursery in New Mexico (it is not far from my house actually) and he had one in bloom, the smell is beautiful. I bought a cattleya from him, it's a one-off hybrid he created. The flower is the color of a squash blossom, a somewhat orangey yellow. Both of these are upstairs because my downstairs is only good for phals. too dark.

This summer i bought a Catasetum hybrid seedling, specifically Ctst incurvum x Ten Dragons 'Night Wasp' with a nice big pseudobulb and a smaller shoot, the little orchid was nice and green and only the tips of the leaves were dry (due to the shipping trip i believe).I watered it normally until a few weeks ago when the temps started dropping.The smaller shoot yellowed its leaves, but the biggest pseudobulb didnt.A few days ago i noticed the little shoot was brown and when pulled, completely rotten to the base even though i didnt water..it also seemed to be a separate plantlet..the biggest plant is fine and its putting out a new pseudobulb!the plant is still very green and fresh...should i water?should i not water?do i risk another rot?where is the dormancy i hear of?also, the medium is in good condition, no smells and such and the pot seems to be a good size for the seedling........what am i suppose to do now?its my first Catasetum btw! ^^

HI, can you plee send me a picture so I can see better what is going on? just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram, imgur or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :) as long as catasetums are growing new shoots there is no need for a rest as they are in active growth, I've never heard though of such an off season catasetum, but I did hear of offseasoned ones but some do have quite short dormancy :)

Hi Danni, how do you fatten up the pseudobulbs of Catasetums? My latest keiki of Fdk. After Dark is still skinny after almost 3 months later. The leaves are growing well. I mist the roots generously daily; fertilize with a weak Gaviota 63 solution every Sunday 3x for a month; with a weak Gaviota 67 solution on the last Sunday of the month and a weak solution of seaweed emulsion monthly. It's potted in 100% sphagnum moss.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 жыл бұрын
Hi, no worries it will fatten up on its own. The keiki is not a keiki actually, this orchid doesn't produce keikis, it's its pattern of growth to create new psbs each year. As they grow they will be thin, but when the foliage is complete, the psb will start to fatten up. The growth period usually extends to more than 3 months, so there is still time. I am not sure about the concentration of fertilizer you use, but keep in mind these orchids are heavy feeders during their growth period. Hope this helped :)
@fishforthot
@fishforthot 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply, Danni :) What is your fertilization regime for your Catasetums? As for mine, I use a very weak concentration as with for other orchid types eg. Phalaenopsis, Paphiopedilums and Cattleyas that I have for the fear of burning the roots. I bought a high N liquid fertilizer recently and shall use this one specifically for the Catasetums (and Paphiopedilums). If my weekly fertilization schedule above sufficient for Catasetums? (I just pre-order Cycnodes Wine Delight based on your recommendation!) ~ Sri (Singapore)
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 жыл бұрын
I think a weaker fertilizer at every watering is good, I know some people even use slow release fertilizers with the liquid fertilizer. It is hard to over fertilize these guys if the fert is properly dissolved so no worries :) I usually use a 80ppm concentration at every watering :)

Hi Danny, my cycnodes wine delight is now 2 months after blooming and she still isnt dormant, could you give me some tips, how to start dormancy or something like that? Thank you very much, love your channel, keep up the amazing work you are doing :)
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 жыл бұрын
+Dorothea hello, well this particular hybrid, and not only, doesn't really need a dormancy :) in some climates they don't even take a dormancy so I don't think you should try to induce it. It might decide to drop leaves and in 2 weeks produce another growth, or decide it wants to produce it now it's not a rule. If might decide it wants to bloom again, mine produced 3 spikes last autumn over 2-3 months :) so let it be, she knows better what to do, just what I believe :)

Great video!!! However as a Catasetinae grower I think you might have made a mistake with attributing higher light levels to male flowers, this is true for female flowers; whereas male flowers are produced with lower light levels. Your plant though beautiful would not produce male or female flowers since it's a hybrid of Cycnoches and Mormodes it produces perfect flowers. As previously mentioned the Sunset Valley Orchids website has a lot of information about these plants. Love the video....
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 жыл бұрын
+Andrew1987ism yes that is correct and I realized it afterwards :p there is an annotation that pops up and corrects the info, but it only appears on PC, not on mobile devices. Can you elaborate a bit the perfect flowers part? or direct me to an article? I didn't hear this before :D thanks!

Yeah, it is confirmed that bright light will produce female flowers. Bright light = stronger plant = more energy to make seeds = female flowers

My first winter with Wine Delight. It is in spike. During dormancy, should I place it in the dark? Should I keep watering every other day, until the blossoms are done and then slowly reduce watering?
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Marcella, so it has no leaves but a flower spike? that's great :D no it doesn't matter where you keep it in its dormancy, if it has a flower spike though keep it in light though. Just read the orchid, offer some water when the psb get pretty shriveled, if they don't all is ok, while it has a flower spike it will probably require some water. Afterwards not so much :)

The spike grew roots? Maybe you got the new growth mixed up with a spike? If it is a new growth, the roots from the past growth will probably die, like Danny said. Maybe that's the rotting?

I need your help. In August my cycnodes lost all its leaves due to spider mites. Then I got rid of the mites, unpotted it cut all the roots and treated it like in dormancy. Meaning I put it in a cool dark place. And just now after one and a half months I saw that it has a grown spike and three more little ones coming out of the bulb !!!!! Of course they are all white due to the lack of light. I am speechless !!! And I am asking you. What am I doing now ??????? Thank you.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 7 жыл бұрын
Oh dear :)) your orchid was not ready to go dormant, if the leaves fell for non natural causes, the psb might still need to plump and mature. I think you can let them be and observe the orchid, if it gets really shriveled cut them off. For the future I wouldn't try to force dormancy when they are not ready and also, you can leave the orchid wherever you want, they don't need cool dark places for dormancies, that's just a.. slogan or something to say it's easy to store them :) you can leave them in the pot until you see the first new growth appearing, just make sure you don;t water that's all :)
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 7 жыл бұрын
oh also, some catasetums bloom in their dormancies, when they have no leaves :) so better to repot when they start new growth, different species or varieties have different traits.

Yes, for mine I give them oncidium type light. I have consistently gotten all male spikes this year as a result. last year I gave Cattleya type light and got female spikes. This is only for certain genera though within the Catasetinae tribe as some like Clowesia have perfect flowers. This means no matter what they will have male and female parts in the flower.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 8 жыл бұрын
+Jackie Fu oops yep I mixed those up, will add an annotation with the correction. As I said I didn't get to test that out too much, will see as I get other types of catasetums in the future, so for now I cannot say if it is the case or not, just what I read. As most sources suggest Cattleya light this is what I provided and got these results, but it might depend on species and variety ofcourse. Yep this one ejects pollen, but you need to trigger a very specific location, if you watch the video that I mention in this video with the presentation I show the process of ejecting the pollen. However it's not triggered so easily, which I don't mind :P

FYI, your catasetum leaves are not producing sap. What you are seeing is the honeydew secretion from insects. Check that plant carefully for scale, mealybugs, etc. These insects are VERY common in indoor setups like you have. Keep up the good work!
