A few months ago I bought an orchid at ikea and she was really dry and had rotten roots. I followed your videos and removed the dried and brown roots and the spikes even if they were really beautiful. I did it a month ago and now she has pretty green roots and grew a baby leaf. Thank you very much cause thanks to you I learnt a lot

Lils, I do believe that there is a pattern to Orchids purchased at IKEA. I bought my first orchid at IKEA two years ago. He was tiny and in horrible shape. Yes, I said he, I named him Ike after his birthplace, IKEA. I realize that it was not a very creative name, but I felt so bad for him as he looked up at me with one wilted little bloom. I took him home with the sense that I may just be his only hope for a chance at survival. Even though I had killed numerous orchids in the past, I was determined that this orchid would not face the same fate. I searched KZbin for the expert to answer each of my questions. What I found, were a group of individuals who assumed that I knew what I was doing, used supplies that I would never be able to find at my local Home Depot, and more than likely, would have thrown away my poor little orchid who I knew wanted to live and bloom another day. It was on that same day that I found Danny(MOG), who by the way, I wear her sweatshirt proudly.I started with the first video and made my way through each of the basic videos that I needed to know on how to rescue my little Ike. I started with repotting him because when I looked at his roots, many of them where already dead and the few that were left I knew were destined for the same fate if I didn’t change his potting medium. With Danny at my side (through her video’s) I I cleaned, removed and sprayed with hydrogen peroxide. Next step, a pot that I first saw on Repot Me, that my Home Depot actually carried. I followed Danny’s directions using a Orchid Planting Mix. Two years later, he has been repotted because he has grown in leaps and bounds. His two little wilted leaves are now six leaves with a new leaf growing as I type this comment. His blooms have been too many to count because sometimes while he has one beautiful bloom spike in place, he will show off and put out another spike of flowers. Ike just loves his window and all of his attention. My family now trusts me and has bought me beautiful Orchids for Mother’s Day and my most recent gift was an another Phalaenopsis Orchid who was grown by a grown named Debbie. So as you can imagine, this orchid is Debbie, and my two orchids that I received for Mother’s Day are Phil and Philly. I am taking liberties with names, but I am having fun loving my Orchids, but I owe it all to Danny. You should really take a look at her site and find a treasure or two for yourself. (teespring.com). I love my sweatshirt with a front pocket and a hood...so well made. My son gave it to me for Christmas and announced that the MOG really stands for (MY ORCHIDS GROW)! A little insider joke from someone who knew first hand of the fate of past orchids in my life. ☺️

A new covid hobby... thank you for showing me that I CAN grow an orchid. I received one for mothers day and with your help it is healthier now then it was when received! So much so that I have ventured to purchase another. My first was in a very small pot, so it needs repotting; the roots have gone crazy growing, even the air roots. On to your other videos to be sure I don't jeopardize my current success. Long ago I had received a huge beautiful orchid at a very elegant wedding and proceeded to kill it... I still to this day lament my ignorance. I shall not repeat my mistake now that I have found you. ; )

I follow the saying "If it's brown, cut it down... if it's green, don't be mean" when it comes to cutting or not cutting the bloom spikes on certain orchids that have a chance of branching or forming keikies .....

I live in zone 5 and keep my pals on a windowsill (southeast facing)... each spring I begin to leave my windows open. The cool nights in my zone trigger one of my phalaenopsis to begin pushing a spike. By mid summer, I get a luscious cascade of giant, white, moth orchid blooms. Another orchid goes into a death spiral the second a draft hits it. Yet another just does its normal vegetative growth. All three are rescued phals but one is a mini (death spiral), one is a moth (healthy, blooming) and one is a mystery (healthy, not blooming) phalaenopsis that I got after it’s blooms had all dropped. Keeping them healthy is key, everything else happens when it’s ready. Just more evidence that there is no hard and fast rules with orchids... you really have to go on a journey with each one... both the best and worst part of keeping orchids.

One of my phals keeps growing keikis instead of reblooming. When i got it a couple years ago from a friend, it had two green flower spikes that were cut below when the flowers were. Not too long after I got it, they both started growing new plants (both have their own pots now). I removed one spike and the remaining one started growing a third baby just a couple weeks ago. I’ll probably remove the spike when the baby is ready to be on its own. The mother plant is very healthy and continuously grows new leaves and roots even when reproducing, but I want it to grow flowers for the first time since I got it years ago.

There are some tips in order to avoid snails: you can make a ground coffee barrier around your pot. Snails will not go through it. And of course you can use the plants we use in our vegetable gardens to repel them. Plant an onion, garlic, thyme or parsley, they hate the smell. This is how we keep our gardens and vegetable gardens free of snails and slugs. They are useful also against some pests, so it is quite recommendable to plant some of these in our garden,

Hi, I love your videos and have learned so much from them. I have a local nursery which has a "mature orchid" table. They're simply orchids not in bloom or that will be done blooming soon that are sold at half price which is where I've been buying a lot of my orchids and having great success with them. Most varieties are labeled but like a lot of places, many phals aren't. I bought 2 beautiful moth orchids there a couple of months ago, one still blooming, and would like to try to identify the variety. Can you recommend a good resource to use for this? Thanks! And thanks so much for the videos. They've given me the information and confidence to try some varieties I might not have before. I seem to have been bitten by the orchid bug these days 😊

Hello Danny, Your videos are very informative. I am thinking about repotting my orchids in semihydro since bark chips dries out fast in the top layer. But the winter here can get colder. Hey Dani! I’ve been a huge fan of your videos for a couple months now. Orchids have always been my favorite flowers, and you gave me the confidence to grow them myself!! I just have a quick question. What’s your opinion on moving orchids around? @JamesThomas-qd7hp
@JamesThomas-qd7hp 6 жыл бұрын
moving them will cause stress for sure, but there are some steps that you can do to make the orchids less stressed (matching temperature, same watering schedule, etc.) but both plants are pretty resilient, and should adapt pretty quickly.

Hi Danni, I thoroughly enjoy your channel. I'm a newbie so I have a lot to learn. My husband bought me a phal last year for mother's day. I place it on a shaded window sill. It looks healthy but I noticed a white line on the top leaf. The line is now turning yellow and I don't know what it is. I see specks on other leaves as well but they otherwise look ok. Can you advise what I need to do?

I like to just leave the flower spike. I do this because the orchid puts so much time and energy into creating it. I let it suck all the nutrients from the flower spike till it's dry then cut it off. And if I don't want a secondary spike I just break it off. Just my preference.

About two years ago I started to properly care for my phalaenopsis orchids. All of them are now very healthy (thanks to you) but there are two that are like on FIRE. First have white flowers with magenta vines and the second one is just magenta. Both of them bloomed this winter and had 6-7 flowers. Now the viney one is blooming again (spike brunch out) and have about 12 buds. The magenta after it first blooming (I mean this winter) create another spike, which both have 6-7 flowers. Now it create yet another spike but this time it branch out, so it have about 22 buds total. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? Is it possible for phalaenpsis to flower it self to death? I mean it is old orchid and it have (in)visible pattern at the tip of his leaves, so I suspect one of his parents was schilleriana, but still.

Thanks for the review Dani! I’m now adding species phalaenopsis to my collection of hybrids. Do you treat newly purchased species phals in the same way as hybrids? Frequently I find species phalaenopsis are potted in moss rather than bark or other medium. My temptation is to repot them in bark (my preferred medium). Do you agree? Thanks for your insights! ;p

Hi Dani, I have loved watching your videos, so we'll done and educational!! I have a question: I have a beautiful phal that has been blooming continuously for the past 5 years with only one short period where a spike bent badly from the weight and broke. I feel that I should repot it since it has been 5 yrs, but I'm not sure when. Do I cut off the spikes, or repot while it has its blooms, or just keep waiting. I've been waiting for a couple of years. I do not fertilize it either, so should I be giving it some fertilizer so it doesn't use all of its nutrients? I love my phal and I'm worried that it hasn't had a rest. :( Please advise.

I bought a small orchid last year, the leaves split and died off so I removed them after new leaves started to sprout this year. Only the new leaves are smaller than the original, I have two flower spikes 1 which has flowered and the other is growing from the top centre which I think you referred to as a terminal spike. Do I need to do anything in particular or just let it go and see what happens with it. Also the flower is a different colour than what it flowered when I bought it, much prettier

I only found that seedling pot once and after repotting that orchid died. Has this ever happened to others? Could it have affected it”s ability to soak water?

My summers get as high as 38ºC the hottest hours of some days, I manage to grow some orchids succesfully, I put them on a protected place where they are more humid and cool and sometimes (almost never) I put the plants inside the house to protect them from the heat. I grow encyclias (radiata, bractescens, Cordigera) epidendrum (radicans, Ibaguense) , and maxillarias (tenuifolia, and densa) successfully, well the maxillaria densa struggles a little on summer.

I have cool winters (almost always above 6-8ºC the coldest nights) and springs and atumn between 13-30ºC Ps: below 8ºC I put my orchids inside except the epidendrum (my orchid had never suffered cold burnings)

Dani please help me figure out what I'm doing wrong. I bought 3 new phals in January and repotted them in bark (two were in moss and one in bark) and I did sprayed them with hydrogen peroxide and removed dead roots. Within 1-2 months they all died slowly. I didn't use fertilizer and I water them with tap water. They had good roots but when they started dying I un-potted to check and noticed the roots were slowly dying and leaves were falling off. Then I Bought one in March and repotted in a bark and moss mix and since it also lost most of its roots (there are 5 short top roots now) and the 5 leaves have drooped but still very green. I then repotted it in moss only and started watering with distilled water (Although the one phal I've had for two years I've been watering with tap and nothing happened until i repotted it and it eventually died too). The droopy has been like that to present day. What did I do wrong to the other four repot and what can I do for this last one. I like phals and want them in my life but can't afford to keep buying them! Help!

Bijou Bijou I would start to use a fertiliser with these, they need to be fed. Check out Dani’s other videos for recommendations.

Hi, I actually answered your question in today's q and a since it is a longer answer, so hope you'll watch today's video :) oh ps: don't fertilize newly repotted orchids, let them adjust and start growing roots properly first ;)
