Yesterday, I purchased 3 dying overwatered epidendrums without flowers for $10 altogether. I repoted them and now I'm waiting for them to get healthier. Thank you for the great tips, Danny.

30 years ago I had an orchid I had no idea what it was or how to care for it but I really liked its "star burst" of orange flowers atop a long stem, now I know it must have been a reed stem epidendrum, many thanks to MissOrchidGirl 🙂 !!!

Mine have been blooming since last summer, the blooms last so long! They tend to rebloom from the last growth node from the top, and the other nodes tend to create the keikis. They'll also grow basal keikis. Night blooming epidendrum DO have a fragrance, I've read it's similar to jasmine (the flowers are white, waxy, and showy). I'm from Southern California and grow my reed stem epis outside on my south-facing balcony. They LOVE direct sun, unlike most orchids. My epis have experienced over 105° F, and under 45°F. Over 95°F the blooms might drop, but the stem usually reblooms from the next node when once the temperature drops back down below 90°F. To force epis into bloom, put them under a bit of stress, skip watering for a bit. Once spikes begin to form, resume watering. Over fertilizing is another way to stress them into flowering. For media, I use a mix of orchid mix and potting mix (Miracle Grow), and keep the roots aerated with holes in the pot. The flowers are susceptible to Aphids and Greenflies outdoors, the fleshy parts of the stem are prone to scale. The soil can become overrun with fungus gnats pretty quickly as well if you are using a terrestrial mix or potting mix. Prevent this by letting the top two inches of media dry thoroughly between watering (they don't like to sit in water) The really cool thing about epis is how easy they are to propogate. If one of your stems happens to break off, either shove it back in the media covering the bottom 3 leafnodes (it'll grow roots from the bottom nodes), or take a clean razor and cut the reed into segments with 2-3 leaves each. Keep it humid and out of direct sunlight, and each node should develop keikis.

I enjoyed your video very much! Those hybrids are so beautiful. I am a sick fan of epis and of course have many of them at home. Ranging from yeallow, red, purple, orange and some whites... all spices that I've collected over the years. I'd like to suggest that, at least you're so interested in producing keikis, it's recommendable to cut canes once they finish producing flowers in their panicles. It will allow the plant to produce new canes with bigger panicles than the ones from keikis. It's something I learnt by accident and comfirmed with the help of a Colombian expert. Also, it's good if you use small pots to plant them. It makes that plants don't spend too much while producing roots and soon start preparing to bloom. So you can repot them every year by adding pots keeping in mind the same idea and to repeat the trick over and over. Greetings all the way down from Venezuela! Thank you for reading!

ONG, I have this frowning in my garden on the ground as well as in pots without knowing what plant they are! Don’t even know they are orchids! Never take care of them, never water them or feed them. But they keep on blooming four seasons. I do cut the stem and just put them in new pots, then they kept on extending. Thank you for the video now I know their name.

Here in Perth Western Australia, my epidendrums all get at least morning sun, some in baskets some in pots. There are easy to care for, as easy as my dendrobiums. Love your channel.

Im from Puerto Rico and I have the Epidendrum radicans, the crystal valley red star and a purple one. I have seen a lot of the varieties on sale but the yellow one is rare to see, im dying to have it too. There a really versatile plant, they can be grown mounted to a tree, on an orchid mix or in any type of soil at least here in the island. Almost everyone that haves an orchid here, haves this types because they are so easy and versatile to care for. Because they are so abundant keiki producers, I have so much of them I have growed them mounted, in the hard soil with other plants, in pure sun, or at any way you could think of, they can handle it and flower like crazy all year around. I have never seen it on the wild at any forest here but is really common on any house, if all the ones that i have suddenly die, I could ask for a neighbour or friend to give me one and is that easy.

p4ul1010 there is a woman in my neighborhood who grows the yellow variety in her front yard. I want the yellow variety too! The night-Blooming epidendrum and white reedstem epidendrum are beautiful too.

This morning I bought a large but neglected unlabelled orchid which I think might be an epidendrum or a dendrobium. I paid what I think is the equivalent of $1,50 for it. Upon inspection I found 4 mature(ish) keikis (30-40cm) and 2 babies (5cm), it turns out that the mother plant is infact 3 plants and quite large. Do you have any advice or tips for determining which species it is? So that I can try and do research on the plants needs. The nursery didn’t know what it was and it’s not in bloom so right now the babies are getting the phal treatment from me, do you think they’d do better in soil?

Your info is very informative on the Epidendrum, I have seen them here in Florida growing on the roadside in direct sunlight, moisture is key as you said, they can get to 36" high, I have the Epi. radicans and the Epi. purpureum they are wonderful orchids, and they are harder to kill than any other orchid, you can grow it in compost or garden soil, as long as it is fast draining.

I'm from Mexico and one of my epidendrum is a miniature. it's around 10 cm long and it blooms in white pinkish flowers. yeah that's true, people have them outside even on direct sunlight and they seem to like it. Where I live we sometimes have winter temperatures of -2°c but they are not damaged by the temperatures. I live in an area where we have many native orchids. We even hold an annual orchid fair.

Thank you Danny for this awesome vid and for including your care tips on this orchid type ! I just became aware of this genus and i think they are so different , sometimes even the colors have gradient effects , like the reds are almost dual toned if you look closely , they are just unique from the typical orchid look , like the round ball shape! i'm glad you decided to do a video on them because i discovered they come in lots of beautiful bright and even tropical looking styles.

I was gifted this orchid by my mom. It's in a pot with many many many more stems. They're becoming very unruly. How can I repot without damaging it? The stems with flowers are white, but I noticed yours are green. What are keiki and how do I control them?

I had some "fire star" Epidendrum radicans planted outside (north Florida, zone 8b) and they died last winter when the temps dropped below 20F for a few nights in a row. :( I got more this week and will be keeping them in pots from now on.

Hi Danni, I have sent you a package with a oncidium intergeneric division which will hopefully arrive in good condition but you will need to water it immediately since it will be dehydrated because it will probably spend around one and a half weeks to two weeks on transport. I am unsure if you have the same orchid because in a slightly old video I saw a video with an oncidium intergeneric that looks a lot like mine so I’m not sure.
@brokenkeys11126 жыл бұрын
Do you still have your bratonia Shelob Tolkien because I think the one I have sent you is the same one because the name may have changed. I should’ve checked I’m so sorry if you already have the same orchid.

Also keep it away from your orchids because my orchids recently suffered from aphids which is still going one( ones effected oncidium sherry baby sweet fragrance, Wilsonara eve candy pinky and den nobile). Anyways I hope it will get adjusted to your environment quickly and bloom for you next year.

I purchased one of these beautiful orchids a few months ago. It has two canes. The tops of both are dried out. Is this ok? Once the prior bloom is spent, is it supposed to be cut back? One is producing a keiki. So I suppose that is good. I just am curious to know how to care of the cane. Do you ever cut it back?

My neighbor has a HUGE unruly hanging basket of them going everywhere and producing keikis like weeds! I live in Puerto Rico btw. She gave me quite a few. But when I can't seem to find out is if I have to remove the reed-stem after it has bloomed. I know it can produce keikis (which I have a couple doing right now because of the nature she gave me the cuttings) but some aren't. I read that they can rebloom but not as stunningly from old canes. But again, should I just remove it? I don't need anymore keikis and if I can help them focus on one healthy bloom I would like that.
@paulakreinberg14486 жыл бұрын
yes the plant will bloom better if the reed stem is removed at the base after it blooms. it will grow new shoots from the base.

Hi Danni. I recently purchased an Epidendrum kockii. I was excited because they are soo hard to find, but thinking I may of rushed into a situation that I'm not prepared for. There is not a lot of information on this species, but it sounds like the Kockii is cool growing: oh noes :0. I live in South Louisiana so I'll have to grow it inside. I've heard of people growing orchids from cool environments in a vivarium, and they add a frozen water bottle once a day to cool the air. Have you ever grown a cool growing orchid? Perhaps it will adapt to growing indoors? I should've known this is a cool grower because of it's size, but I guess you know you're a gardener when you get so excited that you buy without thinking.

I bought an Epidendrum in February and it was going along fine until this week. I repotted it about a month ago. Now, some of the canes are dying back (they look kind of like when Dendrobium canes shrivel up) and they leaves have gone yellow/brown. A few of the roots don't look all that healthy either. A phal that I had in the same area has gotten infected with some kind of fungal disease. Is it possible that the Epi caught it too, or is there anything else that you think might have caused it? I notice that there is a keiki on one of the still green canes and some new growth at the top of another. I'm just afraid that I'm going to lose the whole plant.

I have an orchid, bought in a supermarket, labeled Rainbow Orchid, it has leaves much broader and closer to each other than yours, it had flowers coming from each leaf!
