Although this was a big hit at the time back in the late 1980s, Astley was, initially, a more minor star from the production stable of Stock, Aitken and Waterman (usually abbreviated to SAW or S/A/W) - three music producers who made lots of hit songs in the UK during the mid-late 1980s - in comparison to Jason Donovan and of course, Kylie Minogue, so it's interesting to see how he's endured and become a global star since the internet "Rick Rolling" sensation on the basis of this one song! (He did record others and actually had 8 UK top 10 hits by the end of the 80s, but was only internationally famous for a couple of years around '87-'89 before fading.) This overall sound is distinctly Stock, Aitken and Waterman's, so if you listen to a lot of UK dance-pop tracks of the mid-80s from acts like Kylie, Mel & Kim, Hazell Dean, Dead or Alive and Bananarama (who joined SAW later) you'll notice the similarity. SAW became something of a cliche and ridiculed by the 'serious' music press and artists at the time, but they still made a lot of great fun pop songs which still sound fresh and innocent today.
