Michelle Gomez owns this role so well, that I can't imagine how hard it will be to replace her when she finally leaves. No matter how great the next Masteriss is, we'll still be stuck on her. It'll be similar to how no matter how great Martha was, we still weren't over Rose.

I still haven't gotten over losing Derek Jacobi as the Master and I didn't like John Simm's as a replacement until series 10 (though that has more to do with how his Master was written). I think it's all personal preference. I never liked Rose and Martha became my favorite companion of Tennat's Era with how good she was. Peter Capaldi is my definitive Doctor, and I'm not sure Jodie could replace that even if Chibnall wasn't a shit writer.

Missy's been a bit better written this series so far, which I like. At least they've toned down the "Hey look, I'm a woman now !" jokes and upped the Roger Delgado-like seriousness at least a bit. I know the Master is as mad as he/she always was, but some of the "Hey, a female Master !" nods are overdone, unnecessary and lame. I don't care if the Master is male or female, I just want to see some good acting, with the right mix of serious menace and cartoonish villainy. I think Mrs. Gomez has started to deliver. And I find it really encouraging that she likes Delgado's Master the best - good choice. ;-)

It's a crazy mad character from another planet who plays real life/death chess with an old alien friend, a psychopath if you will, but one who likes friendship at a very complex level you can't possibly understand because it's a different society with a different biology from ours, but both friends travel in time and challenge each other very often, although, they still like the company of the other friend, however wicked their relation is. If she's too silly, that means she's doing a great job at playing this unique role in her own way, and she can make the character recognizable which is part of the process in a way, but then again, it's a show about change.

+Robert Green didn't the last master play rock and roll during his takeover of the world, made an army of himself around the globe with all of them greeting each other like goofballs. Honestly this master is more tamer but then again Doctor Who has the whole balance of silliness and seriousness which is what gives the series its charms.

However, tamer is not the most appropriate word I would use, but I quite understand what you mean, even though she can be really creepy mad sometimes. But more regenerations means more balance between the newest and the oldest, like sort of a mean value of all incarnations (but not entirely, because there are always new variables). You can see the old incarnations within this new Doctor, and the same happened to Missy. I can see the mind of evil from Roger Delgado's Master when she plans every move ahead on a friendly game of live chess. I can see the fashion issues from Eric Roberts's Master somehow when she tries to be feminine and puts lipstick before getting to Osgood and sings a pop song in her own way, but suddenly turns into a creepy predator. I can see John Simm's Master when she acts like "Bananas!", even though his Master goes towards the peak of madness and Missy mixes the new and the old in a good balance,...every Master is still there if you know where to look and she makes the role recognizable, which gives the show a unique charm, like the Doctor himself. Doctor Who never ceases to amaze me.

A "deep love" does not have to be romantic. You can love someone and have a very close and complicated FRIENDSHIP. Michelle flat out says that Missy doesn't fancy him. Quite frankly I like that they are delving deeper into the relationship between the doctor and master. Moffat is right.
