My jaw dropped when y’all said the top students, say 500 apply, only 5 get in. I searched “chances of getting into med school overall” and it’s a 36% and with a 3.5-3.7 GPA, there is a 47% chance.

Definitely earned my sub, you guys talk about very insightful topics. I think the emphasise on grades especially in immigrant parents is brought upon by their own background. I'm thinking about my parents from Sri Lanka. It is so competitive that if you do not get good grades or enter a good university it is very difficult to have a comfortable life. Now and in New Zealand, we have so many opportunities to earn a comfortable life that is not based on degree or academics. For instance, you can given monitise your ideas in a form of a business. I do not think our parents had these opportunities or even know they exist. They just want the best for you and this is what they think is the best.
