I'm legitimately jealous - only chance I had to see them was in 2014 or so and Sebastian was so drunk I really thought he might fall off his drum stool. He struggled to keep a consistent beat all night and Jesse was visibly pissed. I collect live recordings and know how brilliant they can be onstage in better circumstances... hopefully they come back to my neck of the woods eventually!

God these first two albums are perfect, and the tone. 24 fret Keng Armstrong basses with humbuckers ran through two different frankenstein Peavey stacks, completely distinct. I think some of the cab speakers have been replaced with PA speakers.
@cftvdataАй бұрын
I'm pretty sure this is similar to how Bob Mould got his massive guitar sound in Hüsker Dü, sending each pickup signal into separate stacks with a very slight delay added to one of them.

I'm not sure exactly how it works but he also uses a keyboard that goes through the same rig so sometimes he will switch over to that for the stuff that's harder to play on bass and itll sound the same. Idk if that happens on this song, but that's what I was thinking about when he did those weird slide parts. Also note that the drummer is the singer, lol. Great band!
@beckerzineo2 ай бұрын
I don't think he uses the keyboard for slides, it's the bass, the keyboard is mostly for complicated songs like that intro to the Physical World... He also uses it more on newer songs, but I don't really like it :X
@cftvdataАй бұрын
When I saw them live circa 2014, Jesse only switched to the keyboard at a few specific moments - "Go Home Get Down", the latter half of "Going Steady", and "Physical World" are the ones I clearly recall. His keyboard tone is quite distinctive from that of his bass rig... so if it sounds like bass strings, it probably is.

i love this band so much and im glad my dad took me to see them this year, i recomend their first ep called 'Head's up' released in 2002, they also inspired royal blood with the album in this vidio 'the physical world'

Man, the first DFA1979 album was a game-changer for me. It only took a few listens for me to realize that I had to learn how to play bass and write songs of my own. Almost 15 years later, I'm still at it.
@cftvdata3 ай бұрын
One of the worst and most disappointing live bands I've ever seen, though! It was a year or so after The Physical World came out, and the drummer/singer was substantially more loaded than I was (which is saying something for the time) and I actually thought he might fall off his stool.
