and it's the end of September so it's time for MiSTer FPGA news and MiSTer FPGA updates! We have a new WIP Philips CD-i core, new arcade fpga cores from Jotego, Neo Geo Pocket Color updates, MiSTer FPGA SNES core updates...and a LOT more!
But today its all about new MiSTer FPGA cores for retro gaming consoles as a Philips CD-i core is here! And it plays Link: The Faces of Evil, Hotel Mario, Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and more! It's definitely some of the rarest retro gaming hardware out there and there is now a WIP build thanks to Slamy...so let's test it! The same way we did the MiSTer FPGA N64 core and the MiSTer FPGA Saturn core when it first started development!

The Sega Saturn core has come soooo far and is so much fun to game on. It’s amazing we can play all the major generation 5 consoles with near-perfect cycle accuracy on a single little device. 🎉

I just got my Mister Pi on Tuesday. I’m still figuring it out, but it’s amazing from what I have managed to get going on it so far. All this gaming for £139 shipped is insane value for money. And it looks spectacular on my PVM. I like it so much, I’ll probably end up buying one of those consoles Taki has been teasing too.

One of the better addons I have for my Mister is a USB HDMI input for my computer. It makes the whole process of setting one up a lot easier when I can easily display the video on the screen without having to switch back and forth between inputs. It's not fast enough for faster games, but it gets the job done.

I used to have a CD-i in the 90s. It has some interesting titles like educational titles, Japanese Karaoke discs which is nice. Does Tetris CD-i work? I love Tetris and this is one cool version of it! Burn Cycle is very interesting, too.

Thanks, as always :) Could you give your oppinion on potential future computer cores? I know it's not your focus but still. I have my hopes invested in a few: A true 'Classic Mac', an 'Apple II GS' core, a 'NeXT' core and last but definitely not least a 'Quantel Paintbox' core.

My favorite neo Geo pocket color games are tied between the power battles and SNK versus Capcom card fighting clash. One note of update for the core; you don't have to do your system settings every time you launch a game now. Or at least that's been my experience with the analog pocket.

i love my mister pi, its my first mister ....i have bad luck with memory stick though....runs at 122mhz without errors on memtest....dont know if this matters somewhere

i'm convinced CDI is just there for the memes, and to bring the horrors of those zelda games to more poor souls! i'm excited about more future exotic and successful hardware cores ( Jaguar, 3DO, FM-Towns/Marty? ) but well i guess once CD-I is done, then the focus will have to go somewhere else anyway :D

It seems to depend on the country you're living in. Here in Germany I've seen many CD-i devices and not once a Jaguar or a 3DO. Maybe it's because we are very close to the Netherlands here. The CD-i was used in my driving school still in 2005 when I made my scooter license and 2007 when I approached my car license. There was a bar code scanner available for it to start playing some educative content.

I remember a long time ago a stream with RetroRGB and WrestlingWithGaming saying the CD-i would be in theory easy to start since it was Motorola 68000 based, but i think the wxact variant and some of the other hardware would make it very difficult to fully implement. Hopefully that proves not to be the case in the end.

The baseline hardware isn’t bad but once you get to the add ons it’s all proprietary custom silicon

It uses the 68070, which could make you think it's an upgrade of the 68060, but it's actually closer to the original 68000 or the 68010. Instruction timings are different as they cheaped out on some parts of the microarchitecture.

Yes it’s an odd naming convention but it’s basically a 68000 with some variables

I almost bought a Neo Geo Pocket Color recently, mostly out of curiosity to check out the mythical d-pad, but the prices of the consoles (about 300 USD) and the games (110~130 USD each) quickly made me give up on that idea. The retro gaming market is unreasonable right now, some systems still got decent prices, like the Saturn and PS2, but others are either a bit overpriced (Dreamcast) or waaay overpriced (over 400 USD on a NES when you can get a famiclone for ~30 USD? ridiculous! let' s not even talk about Neo Geo or Jaguar).

I was lucky enough to find on ebay a NGPC with a back-lit screen mod for 150$. Afterwards, I got a cartridge that can hold multiple game roms. Im hoping the NGPC core on the Mister will one day allow the use of a link cable to connect it to actual NGPC and have multiplayer goodness.

@@gcolombelli I own a US NGPC bought back when it came out, as well as a JPN slimline. It’s not really a dpad, but a thumb joystick, and yes it is superb. Only other handheld that had a controller like that was the GP32, which I also still have but it no longer works well.

I heard of the CD-I but it never interested me - same with the Jaguar - the only console that ever interested me that was before the PS1 or Saturn was the 3DO - and also some games from the 3DO like Gex, Off World Interceptor and Total Eclipse were ported to the PS1 ... I would love to see a working 3DO core - heck I have a dead 3DO, and i am willing to sacrifice it to anyone who knows how to get a working core out of it. The laser is dead , and I do not have the expertise to fix or add an ODE to it.

I’m following it but currently there’s not enough instances to call it anything more than a manufacturing “rounding error”. I’ve kept track of people with issues vs sold units and were around .5%. Which would be within the margin of manufacturing error. But I am keeping track

It's absolutely crazy that the MiSTER dev community uses Discord as a software distribution channel. Unachievable Unindexable,, Inaccessible for anyone who cares about privacy. Consider yourself lucky... tons of problems with the first batch, where do i begin... AV Pro has muffled analog audio, Mister Pi plus RAM combo not working great at lower frequencies meaning RE2 and Conker crashing on N64 core. No output to CRT when running utilities on my unit (only HDMI). At least cores outputting to CRT Others reporting included BT/wifi dongle loses paired BT controllers after every reboot. So this will probably be all ironed out on the next batch release, which I guarantee will be delayed due to all the issues
