Everyone but Madeline is fearful: Madeline is so panicked that she’s started to disassociate. That’s why she seems kind of calm at the beginning - she’s reached the point of anxiety where she’s in a sort of fugue state and is not entirely sure where she is. Her true emotions come to the surface as the song goes on.

Can we just agree that Jayma Mays is such an underrated singer and actress. i know she isn’t really considered a singer, but whenever she sung in glee her voice was so cute and nice. also her acting is really really good especially in scenes like this where she has to show her characters anxiety and in scenes where she has to break down or cry, they are really convincing and make me really feel what the character is going through. also, bonus points for singing this song faster then most people do, it takes a lot of skill to sing this song especially in the speed she did it.

Her acting is fine I just think she sounds sooooo fake and processed in the video of her singing it. Her timbre of voice didn’t fit with the way she was moving in the scene (her light airy tone would NOT have happened when she’s literally running out of a church) so I would’ve loved a live performance from her... it’s so hard to compare to the live performances. Like I can’t even believe that she actually sang it that fast because it sounds so fake, and her lip sync is off so much in the video

No it doesn't. Patti LuPone is the most overrated performer in the history of musical theatre. She literally shouts everything, doesn't have any sense of musicality, and destroys every rhythm she touches, and her fans just excuse all of that and call it "making a piece her own." Get real, people. I have never understood the appeal. Is it because she's a big personality? I'll give you that. But the heyday of larger-than-life non-singers is over. It's time for us to leave Patti in the past where she belongs. She's perfectly good in roles that require no singing. Maybe she should do more stuff like Penny Dreadful.

The way she casually starts picking the flowers off the bouquet, the delight in her face when the lightning strikes after "it starts to rain", when she grabs the mic off the stand for "look I didn't want to have to tell you but I may be coming down with hepatitis and I think I'm gonna faint", how perfectly timed her throw of the bouquet is to when the ladies catch it right on the last note, and just how relaxed her delivery is of this monster of a song. Her breath control is insane.

@Liza George - * Julie Andrews did muff lines, but I'm sure that happened on occasion to all the singers who attempted this song. Was this after Andrews started to have trouble with her voice? She enunciated, but the notes were boggy at times. * Beth Howland seemed to pick up the pace as the song went on, but she lost clarity. * I think Madeline Kahn best expressed an inner anxiety attack the best.

I had never seen Madeline Kahn's performance before this video and she is so perfect with it. She starts off slow and gently begins raising the tempo. Also, I love how the realization hits her; she starts the song off with a normal expression and she begins to creep in panic with her eyes and tone as the character processes the situation.

My top three? 1. Madeline Kahn - not the fastest but the one with the best characterisation. She doesn't need to flail around and make funny faces but you can tell that the lady is a little bit "cuckoo" in the head. 2. Julie Andrews - I like how she builds up the craziness slowly and goes balls-out crazy in the end, not in a very theatrical but in a more subtle and quiet manner. 3. Jane Shaw - the way she keeps pace and just builds the momentum from the get-go. Just plain wow. I like Lupone too but she is just a bit too "out-there" for me.

even if it was recorded, they have to film the scene and the performances don't have breaks unless there's a change in setting during the performance. Everything is choreographed a few days and of course recorded and then you have to perform on camera with the vocals put in later with editing. So Jayma still has to lip sync all the words without missing anything and there's no way she'd be able to lip sync everything if they cut all her gasps for air out to run it smoothly, so she definitely performed all of that without editing. It would just make things much easier if she performed it perfectly then did it again for the camera.

I’d say for sure she did it best. I mean Glee did it best, but it’s pre-recorded. Jane Shaw hit all the beats and notes, didn’t have to revert shouting. Nailed it, through and through. Clear winner here.

ZeldaxShadow42 It’s like you’re intentionally missing the point. Her performance is decent enough sure, but you can’t ovompare performance which was not live, edited, probably sped up, and filtered to the other live performers who are doing this in one take. That’s my entire point. You like her performance? Oh well, but stop acting like she’s on the same playing field. This isn’t that hard to understand.

Madeline Kahn, the way she did so much with it by standing still and slowly going more and more insane always amazes me. That and something about the delivery of "I'm not well so I'm not getting married" always kills me

Lee GaryB Agreed. There is some overacting in most of the other clips, but Kahn’s deadpan delivery here wins out. The way she portrays someone straining to appear calm while internally losing it is the most effective version for me. The part where she lets the bouquet ribbon slip further and further down is genius.

Beth Howland's original recording of this on the cast album is hands down the best and fastest interpretation of this song. Fortunately, the cast recording of that show was filmed as part of a documentary and can be seen in other videos. No one comes close to her.

@@kalatran9583 Whole reason I put Jayma as least nervewracking is because it was the only one that wasn't live, so if she messed up, they could easily reshoot it. That isn't to discredit her at all, I actually prefer the Glee version of this song due to her speed while singing. On the other hand, I put Jane Shaw as most nervewracking because she was performing this right in front of Sondheim himself. Regardless, anything below "least clear" is more of my opinion than anything.

Madeline Kahn is a genius!!!!! Acting this and singing it live with long, long, long breath lines. So glad this was captured. Katie Finnerman was excellent. Jayma on Glee did a nice spin on it. But it wasn’t live. Julie was polite & adorable with amazing diction. Carol Burnett totally gets the comedy and deserves an honorable mention. Jane Shaw also get a nod for managing to sing

While Jayma's wasn't "live" she did still have to sing it (and then lip sinc it) up to speed! I've heard in an interview that she was basically hyperventilating while singing it! I honestly think she deserves more credit!! 😂😊

This is what they are saying: (First Part) Pardon me, is everybody here? Because if everybody's here I'd like to thank you all For coming to the wedding I'd appreciate you going even more I mean, you must have lots of better things to do And not a word of it to Paul Remember Paul? You know, the man I'm going to marry But I'm not, because I wouldn't ruin anyone As wonderful as he is Thank you all for the gifts and the flowers Thank you all, now it's back to the showers Don't tell Paul, but I'm not getting married today (Second Part) Listen everybody, look, I don't know what you're waiting for A wedding. What's a wedding? It's a prehistoric ritual Where everybody promises fidelity forever Which is maybe the most horrifying word I ever heard of Which is followed by a honeymoon, where suddenly he'll realize He's saddled with a nut, and want to kill me, which he should Thanks a bunch, but I'm not getting married Go have lunch, cause I'm not getting married You've been grand, but I'm not getting married Don't just stand there, I'm not getting married And don't tell Paul, but I'm not getting married today (Third Part) Listen everybody, I'm afraid you didn't hear Or do you want to see a crazy lady fall apart in front of you? It isn't only Paul who would be ruining his life You know, we'll both of us be losing our identities I telephoned my analyst about it, and he said to see him Monday But by Monday I'll be floating in the Hudson with the other garbage I'm not well, so I'm not getting married You've been swell, but I'm not getting married Clear the hall, 'cause I'm not getting married Thank you all, but I'm not getting married And don't tell Paul, but I'm not getting married today (Fourth Part) Look, I didn't want to have to tell you But I may be coming down with hepatitis And I think I'm gonna faint So if you want to watch me faint, I'll do it happily But wouldn't it be funnier to go and watch a funeral? So thank you for the twenty-seven dinner plates Thirty-seven butter knives Forty-seven paperweights Fifty-seven candle holders

Katie Finneran's is my favourite of these performances for the energy and physicality that she brings to this musical number. I absolutely love the moment she loses her breath at, "I'm not well..." The audience finishes, "...So I'm not getting married." Katie then recovers with, "You've been swell, but I'm not getting married." Priceless! Madeline Kahn is my second favourite because her portrayal is 50 shades of cray cray. She has an almost maniacal tone to her voice which is comical yet believable and fits the role perfectly. I also commend Janes Shaw’s rendition, which has the most clarity of diction, along with the added pressure of having Stephen Sondheim right behind her, scrutinising every line. Jayma Mays’ version is good and I enjoy it very much, however, because it was made for the screen I struggle to include this when comparing these performances.
