@@hoseasylvester2596 That depends on what you're looking for in deciding who is the "best." People who are interested in seeing some attempt at acting and at least a little scope in vocal technique may very well find Madonna's performance far superior. Jess Stories, I agree that Patti Lupone is a strong vocalist however, I feel Elaine Paige was firstly, a lot more accurate with the notes, has a voice which suits the music perfectly, has the perfect balance of emotion and vocal performance and to me had an overall better performance. I am British so have grown up listening to the West End’s first Eva Peron, Elaine Paige. This is probably partly to blame for my opinion, however, I’m not really a fan of Patti Lupone as I don’t think she can sing as well as she believes she can. Tbh, It’s all about opinions as different people prefer different approaches to a role. I believe my opinion has a rather valid back up of facts and knowledge, as does yours, I expect.

This song definitely only sounds good when the person singing can act as well, patti, Elaine and Eden acted as they sang with variety so that you can hear the shouty desperation they had in their voices mixed in with their talented voices, Evita NEEDED Peron to stay in power so that she does too, yes some people have a good voice but it doesn’t work if you don’t put in the emotion that really gives the song its beauty...

I actually don’t mind that Madonna lowered the key for the film version. It makes sense in the context of the scene. Evita is giving a speech to convince the people why they should support Perón, so it would be weird for her to practically scream at them during her speech. The way Madonna sings it sounds convincing. The change is appropriate for the film, but I definitely prefer the high notes in the stage version. Some things just don’t translate well on film.

That's a strange way to phrase that. Sure, sopranos sing that note all the time, but it's not a special note for them. When you say soprano Es, I think of E6s, like Christine's note in Phantom of the Opera. Plus, it's not a soprano anything if it's belted, which this very much is/has to be. I would call this a belter E, personally, since, for many belters, this E is one of their highest notes.

Strangely enough, the ones who belted it out the best like Patti were also the ones that were harder to understand the lyrics. I can't believe I'm thinking this, but I kind of liked Madonna's because it was much easier to understand the lyrics even if the singing wasn't as spectacular. But then controlling sound in a movie is much easier than in a live theatre performance.

From what I understand, Sir Andrew told Madonna she could have the part only if she actually learned how to sing. He wasn't going to have her butcher his award-winning score with her "Borderline" twangy bravado. So she took it to heart, and really developed a nice vocal range. It's evident in her two post-Evita albums..."Bedtime Stories" and "Ray of Light". Cheers!

@@thevampirefrog06 you mean the musical? it really depends, we have mixed feelings about everything around here lmao. On one hand we are argentinians, we love attention and seeing ourselves portrayed out there. We especially enjoy "Don't cry for me Argentina" since it's the most accurate depiction of what Evita was for the poor and what she felt for them. But on the other hand, some people here venerate her like a goddess, since she did so much for the working class, and they complain about the "dramatization" of her figure or other inaccuracies (such as the presence of Che Guevara, who wasn't even in Argentina at this point). We are pretty arrogant and passionate about politics, so for some of us it's kind of "disrespectful" to make a musical out of such an important figure when you aren't from here and don't understand our people and what Evita means for the masses. I just personally take it for what it is: a Broadway musical (that needs to appeal, and therefore it will probably be inaccurate, and that's okay) based on Evita's life :)

rishabhrox1 It is an unfair comparison becauase 1. The theatre singers did not have the option to lower the key. It was likely prevented by licensing laws and Equity contracts. 2. Madonna had the luxury of stopping, re-singing individual lines, and real time coaching from a record producer in a studio. The other singers were performing night after night 100% LIVE. This show is full of huge songs, and the performers had to be able to sing the entire show every night. Madonna never had to do that once.

@@deshaunx776 The video doesn't doesn't compare artists... It only compares renditions of these songs, and the character each voice portrays REGARDLESS of what medium it is being performed on and what luxury and all everyone has. Even Broadway singers receive a training session and workshops before portraying a character so let's not pounce on queen Madonna like that. Her RENDITION on it's own, regardless of the key or the fact that it may have been re recorded is amazing and captures the passion and power of Eva's personality brilliantly. Those growls, that phrasing and projection of each word clearly....is unmatchable and in a league of it's own. The Broadway artists have my respect and Madonna can't compare to them, BUT when it comes to giving life to a character, Madonna in my humble opinion did it best with her more restrained yet more well rounded approach.

Some impressive moments here and there, some interesting choices, but Patti is The Queen and the others are Ladies-In-Waiting. I was 16 when I saw this on Broadway . I went because my summer camp friend, Jane Ohringer, was cast as Peron's Mistress ("Another Suitcase In Another Hall"), but I had no idea what I was in for. The Harold Prince staging was new and exciting, and nothing could have prepared me for the force, the beauty, the glory of Patti's dramatic and vocal prowess. I have been a devoted fan ever since. If you've not seen this live footage of "Rainbow High,: definitely watch ... the video quality is not great, but you get a glimpse at the rollercoaster ride she took the audience on ... the tempo is breakneck speed, and there is no question who is in charge. Not to steal Seth Rudetsky's deconstruction routine, but she turns the heat up (on an already very hot stage) at the 1:45 point ("next stop will be Europe") then watch that fur go on her ("dressed up ... somewhere to go"), then she's hilarious at the 2 minute point as she dismisses the men with a wave of her hand ... next, watch her legs from 2:05 to the end (amazing), ending with one more diva toss of the fur. Awesome choice - I think Patti clearly slays the Broadway version (IMHO, some of the others ranged from really good to truly terrible). It's interesting, but even without considering Madonna's potential vocal limitations (and to be clear here, I am a fan of Madonna's - I would admit that she isn't a great vocalist, but I think her voice sounded the best it ever did around this time, and she clearly worked very hard on this. I think she is a phenomenal and immortal performer overall - put a pure vocalist - no.) concerning this song, I can see the change needed to the song for the movie version. Can you imagine the sound of the song, in that key, in the sound system of the movie theatre? Ouch - it would have hurt! There, they can make the impact of what the song is talking about in the visuals - which would be much more limited in the stage production, and not need to 'ramp it up' with the song as much. Thoughts?

Always liked Madonnas singing in the movie, but I never thought about it like that! Agree with you in every point

Anne, Madonna's voice did improve a lot after training for Evita. The album she did after Evita sounded really good for this reason. Still I was pissed off that they cast her instead of a real Broadway type singer. It was like sending a halfway decent high school gymnast to the Olympics.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I liked Madonna's the best. Even though the key was changed so she could hit the notes, that was the one where I understood the lyrics and I felt like "Evita" was the most convincing in her arguments to the people.

Patti wins everything. Ever hear her performance at the Tony's of Anything Goes? She broke the fucking sound barrier. Incredible.

Putting Patti aside because it’s just not fair to me, my picks would be 1. Loni Ackerman 2. Eden Espinosa 3. Louise Dearman edit: Florence Lacey was amazing

Patti’s is definitely the best vocally wise, but I think Madonna’s version is the best overall because it allows you to really listen to the lyrics, while still being a powerful part of the song.

Everybody but Patti sounds like they’re working so hard and the note is just so thin.

Elaine Paige hands down. It's an abrasive phrase and She sings it the most instead of shrieking. And the key change made for Madonna, makes her version powerful and dynamic and lovely.
