Lea Salonga. I could feel the hurt and anger in her version of the song, unlike some other renditions that sounded more like a "diva moment" than the lament of a broken woman. Besides, a lot of the other singers left out the "t" sound at the end of the word "apart" and hearing a nice crisp consonant at the end is a nice touch that wraps up the sound, making it seem more professional. There's something good about all of these performances, but Lea did the best I think.

Everyone is saying movie because a. she was ugly crying and b. she's famous and more people already knew her prior to this video. The ugly crying part is important because stage actors are not allowed to cry like that on stage. For one thing it wreaks havoc on your vocals for phlegm to be covering your vocal chords, and another factor is that you lose control over your breathing. It's frustrating to see people laud her performance as if it's the best thing to happen to the song when based solely off fame and the amount of tears cried. The movie team butchered the song and it's not fair to the piece that it's the only version most mainstream people know.
@drno873 ай бұрын
@@destituteanddecadent9106 Different media. Perfect singing isn't as big an expectation in movies as it is in musical theater. To a cinephile, if a song gets "butchered" for the sake of making a scene more effective, then that's an acceptable sacrifice. Most of pro-film replies to this video willingly concede that someone like Lea or Ruthie wins on pure vocal quality. They simply don't think it's the most important factor.
@destituteanddecadent91063 ай бұрын
@@drno87 as a cinéphile I beg to differ. Anything "butchered" has no place in a good movie, whether it be a song or a dance or an accent. All of that takes away from a good film experience. A good film does not make the mistake of leaving errors in the final product. Yes there is an "acceptable range" if not perfect. But Fantine in the film version undershot that range by a wide margin.
@drno873 ай бұрын
@@destituteanddecadent9106 A deliberate artistic choice is not an error. Hathaway also did "Come to Me" in the voice of a woman dying of tuberculosis, yet for the Epilogue she sang a more traditional style. @@davidschalk1 true but Anne has literally just had all her hair sliced off by an another actor too and she is no doubt surrounded by cameras. One take with those type of conditions is ridiculous. Not knocking people on stage at all, they are absolutely fantastic for what they do every night. But in film no one ever sings live due to the amount of disturbance and directors wanting perfection etc, so this is super special to watch. Same with Hugh Jackman singing the epiphany song at the beginning of Les Mis. He had starved himself of food and water for days in order to look skinny and malnourished for this beginning... and then still belted that song out live on set! Some incredible moments in that film.
@MartyMusic7775 жыл бұрын
@@beckyc8104 You're forgetting that Anne and every other actor in the movie did LOTS of takes on their songs - I can't remember exactly what Ms. Hathaway said, but it was at least 50 takes on this song alone. Stage actors get ONE shot to sing to their audience and *poof!* the moment disappears. Everyone in the movie did their best, but the stage is more of a workout and generally more terrifying than any movie set could ever be.
@beckyc81045 жыл бұрын
@@MartyMusic777 I think the original comment meant it was impressive in one take because normally in films, they will do many and edit together from different takes, whereas this was one straight take with no cuts etc. That's what I find impressive, because stage actors are just insane pros at what they do, whereas Anne is a film actor. So I just find it so impressive she was able to do it like this. If you look at Sam Barks who played Eponine in the film, she is a stage actor and they actually had to get her to tone it down and sing nowhere near as powerful as she does on stage. So I'm certainly not knocking stage actors because Sam Barks is actually one of my all time favourite performers. I just find this performance by Anne so unique in cinema.
@MartyMusic7775 жыл бұрын
@@beckyc8104 It is absolutely unique in cinema, and compared to ANY other cinematic performance, it's tremendous. What I don't like is so many people insisting that Anne Hathaway gave the best performance of this song of all time, when she did indeed have about 50 takes to get it right. First of all, "best" is highly subjective, second, given 50 takes and the same direction, many other actresses would likely also be able to do the same. It infuriates me that Anne is lauded for something so circumstantial. I would love it it Anne Hathaway would sing this song in concert, just for a fair comparison.

I really disagree with everyone saying Ramin. That version while musically beautiful lacked emotion. Anne Hathaway's which I've seen a lot too lacked the musical technique. Her song had so much meaning. Her acting is the best. She has so much emotion. But you asked who sang it the best and her singing is not the best. My personal favorite would have to be Lea because she captures all of it. I also loved Tomomi Kahara her voice is stunning. She captured my heart. Her performance crossed the language barrier and made me feel.
@marszenka6 жыл бұрын
Tomoni did a really good job. I always brace myself to hear Japanese singers because something in the way the language works (pronouncing things) gets in the way of technique, the sound is rarely full enough to properly carry the note. I've noticed the same issue with Thai dubs for Disney - it's not that the people can't sing, it's that their language is somehow stunting the song. I was pleasantly surprised by her.
@paul.maria.k6 жыл бұрын
Btw I kind of dislike how Ramin changed the pronouns in his version. The song sung from a male perspective doesn't make sense anyway as he can't be left pregnant with a child... changing the pronouns is nothing more than a literary "no homo" and it annoys me a little.

When someone weeps can tear you. More emotional doesn't mean better singer nor better song version. The question is - WHO SANG IT BETTER not WHO PLAY THE ROLE BETTER. Do you see the difference. Hathaway can play the role very good, she is good PERFORMER but she is NOT a very good SINGER. Not even close.
@ellie56507 жыл бұрын
nikalsson You know you don't have to say her opinion is wrong right? She thinks Anne sang it better so let her be, and yes the video title says who sang it better but that can be interpreted in many ways. It could be who sang it better where it's better sounding, or who sang it better role wise. She interpreted the title to who sang it better role wise so that's her opinion and it isn't right or wrong.
@nikalsson7 жыл бұрын
There is nothing wrong to like a performer or singer more. However there is difference between acting and singing and some people can't differ. When the question is - who SANG it better then in singing there are rules, techniques, breath control, supported or not supported notes, resonance, vocal range, voice control, agility and so on. In singing the comparison who is better the personal opinions based on a personal taste doesn't mean anything. You may still like someone who is not the best singer, there is nothing wrong with that, but you shouldn't be mistaken by their singing capabilities.
@rebeccal36717 жыл бұрын
nikalsson To be honest I did kinda misinterpret the question. In terms of technical singing ability Anne Hathaway isn't the best obviously, but the way she sang it (her performance) is my favourite. Sorry for causing a fight.
@daniellab40317 жыл бұрын
nikalsson you missed one thing, no pays attention to any of the things you said if emotion overrules which it did. Unlike the other singers, she told her story to the watchers and told the story with such passion which makes the singing great but her story incredibly powerful which is the whole point of the songs. None of these singers proved that they were unique other than they can breathe correctly and use good technique which any great singer can do, but also when you are singing the song, make sure you are singing from your heart, not your ass. That's what makes a singer great.

Ruthie Henshall is my Fantine now and forever...Ruthie, Judy Kuhn, and Lea Salonga were vocally perfectly suited to their respective roles in the Les Mis 10th Anniversary cast recording (with Judy as Cosette and Lea as Eponine)---the best of the cast recordings in my opinion. That being said, I also love the quality and timbre of Alienette Coldfire's voice. Some of these performances are so out of context with the atmosphere of the song (where at one extreme you have Anne Hathaway fully immersed in the character, while at the other extreme you have several such as Patti Lupone performing in a cabaret/variety show setting) that it's tough to weigh the overall performances and make comparisons.

There are countless good singers in the world who can sing this song beautifully. I think to judge who sang it the best you do have to consider technique and sound as well as emotion. I think Celinde Shoenmaker sounded the best, while Anne Hathaway wins hands down for emotional connection... but of course, Lea Salonga always takes it because she has the balance just right.

You really can’t compare AnnE with the rest because hers is filmed for a movie, with a different context, atmosphere and requirements. Of course she will come off as emotionally better than the rest! Try crying like she did and SINGING at the same time. Most of these are live singing and Broadway level of acting. Can’t compare it to a Les Miserables film made for MOVIES.

You do know that the movie was filmed with live vocals?? They didn’t use backtracks a lot
@PickleJarr5 жыл бұрын
McKinley Klotz 100% live vocals? Chile, only an idiot would believe that. Even live vocals from recorded concerts are dubbed at some point. And AnnE is doing it for the movies, not for stage acting, which is totally different. That is why comparing her performance with actual stage performances is not good because the set-ups are totally different and she has more room to emote as an actress and has more time in between takes.

Ruthie Henshall: Her voice almost breaks during the bridge - on purpose. She conveys the despair and hopelessness of her situation with a skill that has been emulated a thousand times. Anne Hathaway's performance was ground breaking too. This is musical theater - it's not enough to sing the song, one has to advance the heartbreaking story. But the fact is, this is such a genius number, I can't listen to it without loving the artistry of all who sing it well.

Anne Hathaway because of that stellar performance and still sounding incredible and Lea Salonga because I think it's impossible for her to sound bad.
@lunatickgeo4 жыл бұрын
These should really be split into two categories: performance and concert. I think it's best exemplified by Sojung Lee and Anne Hathaway (because they were side-by-side) both sang it well but since Lee was singing in a concert or recital setting, she can focus on her vocal technique more whereas Hathaway has to juggle that with acting the part and she (along with all the other singers who was performing as Fantine) has to maybe make an acting choice that might not necessarily show her voice at their best. The two beautiful harmonies that were done by Idina Menzel and Lea Michele, and Celtic Woman, for example, would not work in a performance setting, likewise, Anne Hathaway's emotional rendition might be considered too much in a recital. A recital or performance is neither superior or inferior to the other but the focus and intention of the singer is different, so I think it's best if you group all the ones singing the song outside of playing the character in one group, and those singing in character in another and then ask who did it better for each category.
