Fun video back then, hilarious video now - as the 1989 Permian Panthers memorialize their state championship, as well as earn redemption from their Friday Night Lights 1988 loss to Dallas Carter, with this 80's boy-band hit.

Looking at some of those mean mugs.. That team had some tough looking kids who whooped up on much bigger teams with lots more talent. Even the goofy song does not take away from that. Legendary..

The biggest high school generations were 90s to early to maybe mid 2000s 5a high schools in Texas. They were freakish big and looked like 30 year old guys, I noticed a decline in size (I'm not talking about height but size and development) in the late 2000s. And an extreme decline as the 2010s started and went on. The weirdest thing about gen z is that they aren't lighter in weight per se than other generations. But yet alot smaller and less developed as a whole. It's weird.

@@Ljcast956 they recruit from other cities in Texas and I know this for a fact. They buy the families home in the west lake bee caves hills promising the families a beyond nice home and guaranteed starting and play time. When I was in school we got stomped by them everytime, they’d have 6’4 freshman quarterbacks that’d literally chop block you everytime. Ain’t no way teams go undefeated close to 4 years without the best players available. Again I know they recruit as I know a couple families that have been moved from a couple of the towns outside of atx to west lake to play. That’s not even fair.

I got so many questions. Did y'all have a parade afterwards? Do you have any footage of it? I'd love to see it. Also, how didn't Chris Comer go D1. He looked absolutely special in his highlights. I only saw he went to a JuCo. One last question. When did you know Stoney Case was gonna be something nice? In the preseason? 1st game? Mid-season? Thanks for your time

No parade, but we did have an assemble in the school auditorium, and ESPN Scholastic Sports America showed up to award us the mythical national championship. A clip of it is in the first part of this video. I never understood why Comer was not more sought after. Recruiting was different back then...if you didn't have the size and other metrics, D1 never looked at us...historically Permian had always been small and scrappy, and so once Boobie Miles got hurt, I guess the recruiters just gave up on any RBs we had. I knew Stoney was going to be good in junior high. He had the height and arm, but he also had calm nerves and could handle the pressure of Mojo QB1, much better than his predecessor in FNL.

No, they were state champions cause anything beyond that is mythical. I'm not shit talking them because from the highlights they look like a badass team crushing the other teams. Maybe they were the best HS team in the country that year but we will never know. I just always hated when these national media sites would crown a team national champs without a playoff or tourney to prove it.

Up there on the cringe meter but I know it was cool at that time. Also, being state & nat’l champs you can post whatever you want 😎 Hope Permian makes another deep run in the 2020’s soon!!

It said they won a national championship but in the movie that was based on the true story Friday night lights they lost the championship game. That story Friday night lights is a great story about the team in Texas. One of the great movies of all time Friday night lights based on a true story.

And 10 years after your comment, mullets are back with high school football. This past season was the first time in years that I kept up with what was going on in high school football. And 1 thing I noticed is that mullets are in again, and many bleach their hair blonde. I'm pretty sure the new 18 year old university of Texas qb has a bleached mullet.

Ahh the good ole days of real high school football where you had the powerhouse public schools with the likes of Odessa Permian, Cleveland St. Ignatious, Massillon, Canton McKinley, Berwick high of Pennsylvania and to name a few more. Not this BS Mater Dei or IMG Academy who recruit players. Just a strong city small community who bred these kids and have played together since grade school..

back then, it was before President Bush signed the law that you could go to other high schools out of your district. Back in the 80's you had to go to high school where you lived. There was no recruting. Your family had to move into the district if you wanted to go to certain school.

Just a thought why was your number 66 when you were a junior but 79 when you were a senior what was the sudden change of numbers for?
@mistermojo66
@mistermojo66 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! Permian issues us numbers based on our offensive position (as you know it doesn't matter what your number is on defense) . I was playing guard on offense my junior year... Then at start of senior year they moved me to tight end. So I actually wore #85 for the first 4 games. But later on the.coaches decided to move me back to guard, but an 85 can't play guard. 66 had already been re issued, and only 52 and 79 were available. I picked 79 because that was my number on JV. Made it hard on my family who had all the MOJO gear customized for them by number!
