What do you do? Trade some grip for longevity or all out grip regardless of how long they last? These days I think most large companies don't really make bad tyres! So far every tyre I've been on from Mitas has been really good! Including the ones on test rides :) I'm looking forward to testing the sports tyres :)

road performance in wet and dry is more important to me than trackday performance or longevity. Generally I've found my pace on track is no issue on road tyres, so it worked for me on some of my bikes. Now I have multiple bikes however, I'll be aiming to have super sticky tyres on the Gixer, good road wet/dry performance on the V85, mud grip over tarmac grip on the Beta, and dry grip on the V7

Glad to find an Irish review on a tyre that I'm interested in for my 2008 650DL V-Strom. Irish roads are brutal in regards to tyre longevity. This is because we don't have any gravel pits here with nice round washed grit. All road grit here is produced from crushed rock. The grit is sharp and it cuts tyres down twice as fast as UK or Continental roads do. Add to that, rural roads in the West can be in an appalling state of disrepair. I'm just about to have Mitas M50s mounted on my newish Royal Enfield Hunter 350, as a French review indicated that they're a good sporty road tyre with good feedback suitable for small bikes (usually bias ply). Having decided on those, I realised that the tyres on my V-Strom are getting old. They still have a lot of tread life in them, but I fancy a change to something more road focussed (as opposed to the Anakees type 2 & 3) and the Touring Force happen to be what I've set my eyes on.
@crimpyjugs56803 жыл бұрын
Michelin Road 5's work well on the CBF, when i bought mine it had a set of Pirelli Angel GT's which felt a little isolated (if that makes sense), just not enough feedback, i changed these for Michelin Pilot Road 4's which gave better feedback, but the handling felt a little slow, harder to turn in at a bend, so when i read that the Michelin Road 5's had a slightly sportier cross sectional shape (i.e. not quite as flat as the 4's) i though id give them a try. They are great, easy to turn in, very predictable handling, great feedback, seem to warm up quickly, wet and dry grip never been an issue. I don't tend to brake hard in the wet as a general rule, but hard braking in the dry has also always been very predictable, even when a VW Passat tried to wipe we out the other day (travelling in the opposite direction to me on an A road, he suddenly decided to turn right, literally right in front of me, no indication, nothing, clearly hadn't seen me, or my headlights!), managed to get around the back of the car as he turned, but only after about a second of very heavy braking, Road 5's get my thumbs up!
@TheGorillaBiker3 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried them on the CBF, I might in the future it depends on price and availability :) I do like them but I personally preferred the Metzeler Roadtec 01s over them, I'd have those tyres again in a heartbeat. I haven't heard many bad things said about the 5s, oddly enough one or two people were VERY against them before in messages and how terrible they are in the rain. Which I found very hard to believe from the other 98% of people I've talked to about them. Same as myself, I tend to avoid hard braking on the road all the time but I've been forced in to it on these tyres in both the wet and dry and they performed excellently :) Ah that's very nice of them, they just wanted to see how the bike looked from up very close......glad you dodged that one!!

Thanks for the real world and informative review. I am about to put a set on, fingers crossed. I am a mid rider (sport tourer), but bike is 250kg and I live in Cyprus. Most of the main brand tyres last maybe 4000 km, before they are shot (heat). The best tyres I have yet found for my bike were the Shinko verge, really good, long lasting (around 8000km in our heat) and best feedback (on my bike) I have had, but sadly I can't get them anymore. If I was being a tyre snob, it would be bridgestone's.
@TheGorillaBiker2 жыл бұрын
Not at all, thanks for watching! I mean as a use case you should see at least 4000km out of them even on a bike that heavy, the CBF wasn't much lighter and I weigh a lot so that didn't help. Obviously outside temps will be much different so it'd be interesting to see how long they last you! When I'm feeling snobby I'm partial to Metzeler or dunlop myself :)

Another enjoyable vid :) Before this I'd never heard of the Mitas brand. I checked out my London tyre shop (FWR in Kennington) and they don't seem to stock them and they are bike tyre specialists. Anyway, like you say, they seem like a good buy if you ride a bit more gently. Definitely suit someone who's on a tighter budget. As you know, recently I've been on Bridgestone BTs for the last three sets. I prefer their profile for the road and they've done well especially in some absolute downpours when the roads have been so awash with rain, tyre tracks have disappeared immediately. Mileage isn't that great of course; 3 to 3.5k only. It's funny to think, when I started riding, if your bike was fitted with Japanese tyres you changed them straight away for a set of Dunlops or maybe Avons. I rode Dunlops for years, but I don't think they're even British now are they? I had a very good experience with Metzler Tourance tyres on my Triumph Tiger. Great grip and tyre life and I had that bike for four years and 20k miles. On my scooters I like to use Michelin Citygrips. Real confidence boosters in both wet and dry and of course lots of mileage due to the low power and weight. Always interesting to hear others experiences, bearing in mind there are so many variables in the tyre choice equation. Cheers
@TheGorillaBiker3 жыл бұрын
Thanks :) I had only heard of them for offroad stuff, Pat the Parts guy in Freeman offered them to me when Dunlops weren't in stock and honestly I'm glad I tried them out :) I'm surprised they haven't heard of them they seem to be an old company! Oh I'm very aggressive in the dry on them just in the wet with the harder carcass and stuff I wouldn't chance it, on anything really! Definitely helped my pocket at the time!! I was very glad of them :) To be honest for that type of customer satisfaction I'd be very happy with 3-3.5k, if I ever get past 7000km I'm over the moon with a tyre. I'm perfectly happy going through tyres once they do their job! To be honest the benchmark was always Michelin to me for as long as I can remember, I've never even seen an Avon on a shelf here but I would try them! I don't actually know about the home location of Dunlop these days tbh! Maybe I should start an Irish tyre company :D Yeah currently if anyone was to ask me my favourite tyre of recent times it'd be the Metzeler Roadtec 01 tbh. If I wasn't so impatient and whatnot I'd have them on the CBF tomorrow. I haven't ridden a scooter in years! I'll have to give another one a shot someday :D There is no one tyre for any person really, it's so dependent on riding style, road conditions etc etc!

I've riden now every street tire from Mitas (Sportforce+, SF+ EV & Touringforce) on my MT-09. Im by far most impressed with the new EV. The internal damping got WAY better than the stiff carcass of the normal SF+. The EV is maybe just a little less flickable than the old SF+ but the grip, stability & confidence in maximum lean angles are insane. I also rode the Touringforce but wasnt really that impressed, strangely the Touringforce needed way longer to heat up than both of the sport versions, ive also gotten a pretty big slide in the wet with the TF. If the tires got temperature they were good and for sporttouring tires very agil. I think its comperable with the Pirelli AngelGT(1). The general problem i have with sporttouring tires (luckily this was by far not as bad than compared to other sporttouring tires) is, that they lose a LOT of their capabilities at the end of their lifetime. They get wobbly when in deeper lean angles but strangely feel not very agil at the first turning input, also they kind of lose their amount of grip. I got ~5600km with the Touringforce and ~3900km with the Sportforce+ and EV. Ill definitely stick with the sport versions. :)
@TheGorillaBiker3 жыл бұрын
I'm working my way through them :) The SF+ EV are going on my GSXR next so really happy to hear you liked them, I look forward to giving them a good test :) The SF+ were already really really good so pretty happy to hear they're an improvement :) And with them on the GSXR I'll get an even better sense of them I think :) I didn't mind the Touring Force, I thought they were a good tyre, good grip, good in rain etc but I wouldn't pick them over the SF+ again, they did heat up a good bit slower and had a lot less feel! I never got a slide myself but the CBF is absolutely rock solid on the road in fairness to it. Agreed on that to be honest, like I said on the Touring forces review I did they kind of fell off a cliff a bit towards the end and scalloped too, so for me I'd much rather use the SF. Ah very good, I got more out of the TF but less out of the SF :) You're dead right :) Thanks for the comment!

After trash out 14.000kms made in rain, dry, everyday riding I found them to be adequate. Measure of mine is 160 but don't know why it's not double compound as on older mitas website it has that information that double compound starts only from 180 up. Anyway, on the rain this tyre is really good, I found a bit vague on dry and on front tyre as it is not as direct as you wanted to go (out of a turn for example), but is comprehensible regarding the price. I also feel that take ages to heat and is stiff, really stiff (carcass) I rate like this: Longevity: 8/10 Dry grip: 5/10 Wet grip: 8/10 Confort: 3/10 Turn: 7/10 (when is on first half life) Behavior at 3/4 of life: 5/10 - It fails to turn in and out more often as it goes more far from the angle that you have to go and you have to compensate on top Price: 9/10 Overall: 6.5/10
@TheGorillaBiker3 жыл бұрын
14000kms is a lot!! My rear was also 160 and is listed as multi compound on the website now, possibly a newer model or something, I could also see the compound line as it wore down. I agree on the time to heat up and the feel, as I think I said in the video the feel on the tyres isn't amazing and since using sport forces I prefer them overall, only downside is they don't last nearly as long. I'm interested in a few of your points, 5/10 for dry grip for a GT tyre is very harsh I think, I use my tyres pretty hard and would rate them a lot higher than that in the dry, I never had one slip, 5/10 would be a BAD tyre for me grip wise. I don't understand what you mean by comfort? Do you mean they run hard on your bike? Between these and every other tyre I've used on this bike they're equally as comfortable, including the Dunlops which were 100 euro more for a set! :) Also the behaviour at 3/4 of life span I'd be interested in how far you ran them, as 3/4s of your life span is where I decided mine were about done and changed them, in my opinion if a tyre loses feel and performance it's used up, even if it has some rubber left!
@TheVelasquez873 жыл бұрын
@@TheGorillaBiker No problem. Yes, probably they made an improvement and add double compound to 160-60 17 14k because I only use them for commute and I check pressure every week: 2.5 and 2.7 bar. I have another motorcycle (mt09) and in that one I use Sport Force + (6500kms it lasted) 1- On the dry side I feel that the front is not compose, if you put a lot of speed and energy on a corner tyre will shake a little more than expect (not wobble) and when out or a corner with 30/40º lean angle tyre will go to 0º degree very fast, faster than a more soft tyre or double compound, it's a bit weird. 2- What I mean about comfort is when I compare with previous GT tires I used in the past (road 4,5, angel gt, T31, Roadsmart 3 and specially my favorite GT Roadattack 3 - witch is a single compound) I find the carcass of Touring force really stiff and uncomfortable on bumps or holes for example. I thing this is from a rigid carcass, nothing to do with the rubber. 3- on 3/4 I think this is a properties of a single compound ( as I think I have on the rear because of what I told you on last comment), as tyre wear is not linear and I have a little bit more wear on the left side for example and I feel a bit different when doing a corner from one side to the other, but overall 5/10 I think is a fair value to give. Overall I did not mention but I will repeat this precipice as they are cheap and last long and for commute I don't need performance tyres, I just need them to be fair both dry and wet with cost-running low, I will probably try a front sport force with touring force on rear and let you know how it go ;)
@TheGorillaBiker3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply I understand what you meant a lot better. I think the multi compound will actually affect your range if you use them again in the future as I got my mileage doing much the same I probably could have checked my pressures more! Ah very nice, I think I might just be harder on tyres then :) I really enjoyed the Sport force +s :) 1 - I think the multi compound may have helped that, I understand what you mean but I never noticed the same, it was still more vague out of corners than the sport forces for sure tho. 2 - Gotcha, and yes the newer ones definitely do run harder as well, very likely due to the carcass like you say! 3 - Ah ok I see, I have pretty even wear as I showed except on the front, which actually was a suspension issue in the end :) Interesting! Very true, and they do that job very well for the price I think, thanks again for the comments :)

I had to do the googles on them, looks pretty reasonable in fairness and if they don't explode you can't go wrong eh :D Good choice, I am a big fan of Metzelers.

@@TheGorillaBiker the ok144`s are a nice compound and tubed (which are getting harder to find in a decent speed rating) and a decent ply and sidewall so less likely to damage them from something that might wreck a normal tyre, plus the pattern they use is pure oldschool military style before the michelin xyz came about and took over, they work really well off road, they are fun on road, they do make a bit of road noise and you can break the back end away in rain if you throw it in, but you got to be giving it some welly and its a land rover lol... yeah i like metzelers they have never let me down they do the job as advertised :D
@TheGorillaBiker3 жыл бұрын
I'd imagine so, they'll end up like a collectors item almost. I see most older motor stuff going that way, like horses are now, pure and utter hobbyist stuff even for people who want to use them daily! Hopefully you can stay getting them for a long time :D Ah road noise has never overly bothered me, altho I do usually ride a bike so I suppose anything is quieter :P Haha drifting a landy would be a great video :P If they came in a tin I'd have a fine phrase for Metzelers....I don't think it's copyrighted :P

@@TheGorillaBiker my old swb series 3 landrover drifted like you wouldnt beleive, did go through a lot of halfshafts tho :P shame we didnt have all the tech we do now back then or i would have some epic videos. road noise doesnt bother me either although in a landrover you hear so many noises its just another one in the symphony of driving, gearbox noise, diff noise, transfer box noise, wheel noise, engine grunts and sucks, popping and farting exhuast. only time ive ever noticed road noise on a bike was with big knobbly tyres on a scrambler back in the day, usually everything else the wind noise and sweet engine sounds mask them. i think we will see the same with vehicles that run on fossil fuels, they will go the way of collectors and rich enthusiasts, the normal person will either have to get rid or convert them to electric if they want to use them without costing a arm and a leg to just start them up lol i used to have some old avon traction millage tyres, they were atleast 30 years old, no cracks no damage and looked like new, even the banding inside them wasnt corroded, they definatly dont make them like that anymore, i used to use them as my working set for when i was stripping or restoring, so i didnt leave my then expensive tyres on while it was parked up.

Hahaha sacrificing half shafts to the gods of drift every time :D That is s shame I'd love to see it :D That's it really, I think no matter what with fun older vehicles you'll always have A noise, and with bikes like that it's wind after a point!! :) They'll eventually have us all driving insulated little electric boxes of boredom yeah.....it's this self driving craic that has me worried that they'll try ban driving and I'll have to be a bandito! That's crazy!! I wonder what sort of planet ending materials were used in them to last that long! And why can't we still use it :D

Really informative, appreciate your effort, but i think I will keep sticking to the regular sportforce +, they are cheap either way :D. Yamaha R3 owner, Sportforce + mounted and really happy with them.

Mitas tires are not reliable. I know of two fellow riders using Mitas Force on their bikes that exploded between 150 to 200kph. I will not gamble my life on this tire.
@TheGorillaBiker Жыл бұрын
I'd honestly like to see the photos of that! All I can speak of is my own experience and others I know who use them. I had 6 sets of them and never had an issue. None of my friends have had either.

I don't know how to share to you the blown up Mitas tires here, but if you have an email, i can send them to you. I just change my Mitas tire on my GS1200 this morning for peace of mind, and i was surprised when the guy at the tire shop told me after removing my front tire that it has a bubble inside. I think Mitas tires will never sell in our country with the news of this two recent incidents, and mine too. My tires are only 2 months old!

Do you know were yours made in the EU plant? I hope you're also reporting that back to Mitas as they should refund you!! You can send photos to me either on facebook or instagram :)
