As a fan, and ignoring salary cap, I think Rants is worth whatever he asks for. He put the whole team on his back during the cursed 2022-2023 season where they somehow finished Top 4 in the West. He also dragged a wounded team to Game 7 of the first round. That season proved he could be the star of any team with a mixed bag supporting cast.

He also has more points in the playoffs then willy. Considering they've played pretty much the same number of games in the playoffs thats a far assessment id say

Mitch doesn't show-up in the key games in playoffs. He puts up a lot of points early in series and disappears in Games 4-7. And he was not injured last year. He played in all 7 games and was a non-factor. For his career, his points per game drops off in the playoffs compared to the regular season. And the players that get paid what he's getting paid, elevate their games in the playoffs.

In a quarter of the season, the Leafs have shown that wins come first and foremost from strong goaltending, strong D, strong team structure, strong coaching, and high compete level. Conversely, even with a half dozen replacement-level forwards in the lineup while missing half of their top 6 and the league's best scorer, they just went 7-2 . Just stop this overpaying crap. Marner and JT are tremendous players, but you can't afford to keep every great player that comes your way. I'd hate to lose either of them, but I hope they are seriously contemplating other options. Tre already missed his opportunity to balance the budget when both Willy and Mitch could have been easily traded without restrictions. Time for Plan B if Mitch doesn't match his desire to be a Leaf for life with a heavy dose of cap reality.

Thoughts on his salary aside, I think Marner has become the scapegoat for this team and unfairly gets the blame for sins all of the core 4 commit. He’s not there in the playoffs? Second highest point scorer in the past five years on the leafs. He doesn’t get physical in the corners? Be fr because have we not complained about matthews and nylander doing the exact same thing? I’m not saying marner doesn’t have his issues but c’mon this is clearly a bias towards goal scorers over people with well rounded games.

The bottom half of the team can't be very good if the top 4 players make too much. Teams that win the cup never have more than 2 players making more than 9 million. The team has to be balanced better and that is why the Leafs can't go very far in the playoffs. Tavares 5 million and Marner 7 million max or let them walk.
