The best thing about Mitchell Tenpenny's music is his haunting ability to sound completely broken when he sings about heartbreak. Even if his lyrics could be read as him being the disgruntled ex-husband that may be at fault as some music critics mentioned, it still does not take away his raw emotion that he sings with. I would argue that the lyrics that make him sound like the bad guy make the song more believable for someone who is hurt and lashing out. At the end of the day, people resonate with the emotions the singer conveys, and Mitchell is at his absolute best when he is conveying soul-crushing emotions about a messy breakup.
