So this is kind of random, but something that I absolutely love to think about is when team avatar is hiding in the fire nation, and Aang is going around greeting everyone with "Flameo hotman!" and the people are just confused. I 100% agree with you that it's also a tragedy. When you stop to think, you remember Azula was 14 in the show and the only type of approval she ever got was from her father for being horrible. It's all she knew and I don't think she should be forgiven because of it but it's definitely sad. I remember being like 7 or 8 when I first watched ATLAB but at the scene 23:23 I had cried, and at the time I wasn't able to express why but it's just incredibly sad to me. We love Zuko, as he was able to grow and redeem himself, but Azula never had the kind nurturing of her mother or Iroh. In her eyes from a very young age, to be kind meant something bad. As a victim of parental abuse, I know what it's like to mold yourself to what feels safe. Azula being the smart girl she is chose to be what she knew would keep her safe from a very VERY young age as we can see with how she's already was known to be mean in the flashbacks of her and Zuko. It's all just incredibly unfortunate and when Azula loses her control, that sense of safety I couldn't help but cry as I watched even though I was glad to see her be defeated. I still cry at that scene, honestly.

Seon Jaime wait, 14?!? She seems 16-18!
@bokocop57254 жыл бұрын
For the first time in her life, she tasted defeat. She grew up thinking so highly of herself because she was always the one being praised and favorited. She's always thought that everyone around her would be her servants and do whatever she said because she was always treated like a princess. As soon as she became the fire lord, she naturally thought she was the person with the most authority in the world and exploited her position to freely command people. Anyone who she thought showed defiance, however little or imaginary, would be immediately removed from her life solely because she has the power to do so. The title of the fire lord did not satisfy her, but instead made her lose control of herself; before, she still knew she needed to respect her father and therefore maintained her manners, but now that she's the fire lord, she thinks everyone in the world needs to treat her however she wants, which is why she broke apart when she was defeated and no one was there to care for her. It was the first time she experienced helplessness, so she raged like a caged feral beast.

Oh, even now seeing that clip brought me to tears. It's, like, the one time when having the villain lose feels like a personal loss rather than any form of triumph. "If what we did was right, then why does it feel so wrong?"
@EvanSol9194 жыл бұрын
While The Great Divide is the weakest episode, there is more going on than people give it credit for. You have two tribes that have become refugees because of the Fire Nation. They are both heading to the same place for safety. They should be allies but what are they focused on? Something that happened 100 years ago, that none of them witnessed and has nothing to do with their current situation. It's a bit of commentary of groups that have "ancient" feuds and how pointless it is.
@Purplepenguinguy4 жыл бұрын
Also the unique animation styles for the different tribes stories are pretty cool, and the episode fleshes out the world a little bit. It gets too much hate. I like the northern air temple less I think.
@mastahfrederique11474 жыл бұрын
It teaches a valuable lesson. It's just not a lesson for the main character, really. But those characters already learn so many lessons throughout the show.
@Purplepenguinguy4 жыл бұрын
@@mastahfrederique1147 I think it's a good kids tv cartoon, and not poorly done, but it's kind of patronizing to the really die hard, young adult and full adult fans of the series, most of the people who are saying "it sucks, worst episode of the series" are teens or adults who have really thought it through. it's a very preachy episode, good kid friendly anecdotal episode but it's just preachy and boring if you are an adult watching it
@mastahfrederique11474 жыл бұрын
@@Purplepenguinguy Fair, but the target audience is children, and they do require more direct, preachy lessons many times, so you occasionally need to just be up front with it. I think it gets hate because it's a filler episode, like Ember Island Players, but it's tone is not comedic. It gives no real character development for our lead characters, since it's a filler, but still tries to teach a lesson. That's what makes it seem preachy, simply being a filler that isn't comedic and has a moral that isn't learned by the main characters.
@TheDarkMaj4 жыл бұрын
@@mastahfrederique1147 What I really like about it though, and what I've never seen anyone mention before, is that Aang ends the conflict by telling a lie, or at least making something up. The reason I will always ship Kataang over Zutara is EXACTLY what his explaining around minute ten. Both Aang and Katara go through similar moral dilemmas in their character arcs and they find inspiration and I suppose some relief in each other because of it. They refuse to be tainted by the main characteristic of war, death. They share moral values, they each understand the pain of losing their whole world, the subsequent need to rise up and meet expectations and make it through because someone out there is dependent on them. They are, in my humble opinion, the healthiest romantic relationship of the series and I'm glad for that. Zutara is aesthetically pleasing to me and I believe it could've been made work, but Zuko's arch is much more self-centered than Katara or Aang's. Some people say Katara acts like Aang's mother, and I say Katara is the sister Zuko never had. She's younger and an absolute prodigy in her element, she kicks his ass more than once, and the basic ideas of Sokka and Katara's relationshio parallels Zuko and Azula's really well: Zuko and Sokka are both the average older brother whose abilities pale in comparison to their sisters', so they find other things to excel in and get distinguished in different fields (like swordsman/leadership). But Katara, unlike Azula, was not groomed to hate him - her hatred for Zuko is a direct result of his and his people's actions and he accepts it, tries to make it up to her and is eventually granted forgiveness, which allows them to have a smoother relationship from then on, and, I guess, kind of turns Katara into an "what Azula could've been if her family had loved her too AU". But ultimately, Katara and Zuko don't clearly share the same ideals or uphold the same moral values, and to me, that's what makes Kataang work and not Zutara. Aang knows Katara, and he tries to stop her from doing something she'll regret (taking a life, acting out in revenge), while Zuko, convinced this is what's going to get her to trust him, pushes her to cross that line, of murdering some miserable man for killing her mother when he was "just" following orders if that would get her to look past all the times he'd wronged her and her loved ones through the last year. In conclusion: Kataang works because, unlike a lot of older and more mature people, they clearly share important values, morals and goals for the future.
@MaxzySunny Жыл бұрын
You said it all to add a little to that.. KATAANG is the best romantic relationship shown in TV cause we got to see how real love manifest not Chema love… Their went from strangers to friends to lovers not to mention their complete each other and are often if not always on the same page something we don’t see them do with others.. Those that ship Zutara are just Zuko fans that are mad about Mai been Zuko girlfriend cause their don’t like her and instead want Katara for him knowing that their personality is not complying together… I mean their were never in the same page in the show even when their are in the same chapter like Zuko want Katara to kill the man that killed her mother why she just want confront him..their went to take down Azula together why Zuko just want to prove to himself that he can beat Azula.. But with KATAANG is straight up uni-mind all the way.

The thing i really noticed my most recent run through was definitely sokka. I always related to him, feeling like I was never anything special. But especially in the finale, when he is on the airship with toph and suki, the animators put in a bunch of absolutely amazing small details that really show who he is, especially with toph. At one point, they come out of the airship and toph starts sliding down, he instantly grabs her and pulls her back. Or when they fall to another airship, moments after getting separated from suki, and he has the presence of mind to dive on top of toph to defend her. In that moment, he is no longer the goofy kid from the start, but a warrior who would do anything for his friends, including laying his life on the line without a moments hesitation. And then you remember that hes 15, and its even more amazing.

My favorite character no cap is all of them. There are certain points where I will pick sides with one of them, but they feel like actual friends so I never actually like one more than the others. When people ask me in person tho, I always say Aang because he is kinda under discussed actually

Thanks for your review of the show, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's so exciting to have just finished rewatching Avatar, a show I had somewhat followed when it was first airing but forgot many aspects of. It's almost as if I now have a higher appreciation for the show having watched it and being able to comprehend its depth. I'm so happy that this show has brought so much joy and wonder to so many people, now spanning across generations as I'm sure many will have discovered it for the first time through Netflix. It truly is a timeless show, and I can't wait to see the live action reincarnation (fingers crossed that it's good this time around!!!).

I always thought of this show as kiddy since Nickelodeon made it, so I never gave it a shot. That is, until for some reason clips of Avatar kept showing up in my YT recommendations. I watched a few of them and I though that I would give the show a try. Moral of the story, never judge a book by its cover because this is one of the best shows I've ever watched

I always thought the one major blemish the show had was the lionturtle teaching Aang how to block someones bending. First of all, even though there was some allusion to the lionturtle throughout the show, nothing ever indicated this creature was somehow capable of such a feat. And the other point, I think the bending block was an unearned circumvention of Aangs moral conflict at the end. You know, the conflict where he had to abandon his pacifist morals in order to fully adhere the responsibility of the Avatar. The whole lionturtle thing was just a bit too serendipitous of a concllusion for me, but considering its a nickelodeon show- there's no way they'd greenlight an outright killing in the show. It's forgivable blemish, but a blemish nevertheless.
@barbaraw12454 жыл бұрын
I can definitely see why people say the lion turtle is a Deus Ex Machina but it never bothered me personally. Aang had already "let go" of Katara,his morals were the only thing he hadn't given up to become the perfect avatar. But he couldn't and that's very human and understandable. Even when he finally said "I have to kill the Firelord" he never really meant it. If he had he would have been corrupted and destroyed. Yes,a better Avatar would have just done it, but I think Aang being so convicted in what he believes makes him so much stronger of a character.
@joeldykman75914 жыл бұрын
Im not saying the energy bending concept wouldn't ever be a good solution, but rather that I don't think it was effectively earned in the terms of the story. While it is true that they showed benders derived their knowledge of bending from creatures /spirits found in the physical world, they deliberately made the lionturtle ambiguous in its role with the story. Merely hinting at a lionturtle being a mythical creature doesn't mean i could assume it would know how to control the source of all bending. Does energy bending work to satisfy a resolution for Aang character-wise? Yes. Does energy bending work to satisfy a resolution for Aang story-wise? To me, not entirely.
@joeldykman75914 жыл бұрын
news I don't think that works though. Tai Lee's chi blocking is more akin to pressure point striking and would work on benders and non-benders alike. Aangs energy bending works solely on those who are benders and would have no lasting effects to a non-bender. Second, thematically the avatar state being locked due to aangs inability to detach himself from his personal attachments is a contrary lesson to learning energy bending due to his inability to compromise his morals.
@joeldykman75914 жыл бұрын
@That guy who's Irrelevant and old news I don't necessarily think it's a cop out, and nor do I think it's a deus ex machina, specifically I think it was just not completely fleshed out story-wise. If it's a sufficient resolution to you, great. I can understand the reasons why it would. I have no problems with a Nickelodeon children's cartoon not being able to get that dark. And the solution (despite my thoughts on it being underdeveloped) satisfies the needs of the plot. By no means does this specific nitpick I have kill the greatness of the show.

Avatar the last airbender is my favorite entertainment property in existence and always has been. There’s just something about this show that makes it more than a show. It’s as if the show isn’t a show, and transcends the medium without even trying. This show will be remembered generations from when it aired as the defining entertainment property that shows exactly the power a tv show can have. Absolutely stunning. There can never be anything else like it.

A lot of people give a lot of credit to Zuko's story arc and say its inspiring as hell, which 100% absolutely true, but there is a highly underestimated value of aangs story line, of how inspiring it is. Even the show expresses it, and a clear example are the first and last episodes names. Im sure you've heard of it, but the first episodes name is "The Boy in the Iceberg", and the last is "Avatar Aang. But thats really not the point. The storyline of aang is that he had to step up and take the responsibility as the Avatar. And that's something a lot of people fail to do irl. We dont be who we are, rather we become just the imprints of ourselves. We become the person other people want to see. His story line is such that he has to take on responsibilty or the world is doomed. We dont have the problem of a deadline, but we still need to find ourselves, look at who we are. And thats what ties the relationship between Zuko and Aang so well. Their storylines have always been intertwined, with Zukos main purpose to find his destiny, and Aangs to step up and take charge of his destiny. And thats why these 2 characters are my favorite, and thats the reason for me that this show is the best show to be made, for me.

I used to think Sokka was stupid and was surprised that he was credited with being the tactician, idea man, and strategist of the team. But that's actually how well written he was. Realistically smart people can be flawed too, especially when they're young, to the point that they can be sexist, misogynistic, and mistrustful of outsiders but grow and mature over time. And of course have their moments of creativity and problem solving.

I'm a long time fan of ATLA and I'm often looking for the newest things about this show and its successor, Legend of Korra. Your review was awesome and very nuanced and that's what I loved about it. It tackles the characters and the world-building. I especially love that because I have a side project that handles this world but with my own visions and characters in a non-canon way. What do you think about the upcoming live action show for the Last Airbender?

I'm re-watching after several years because I loved it as a kid and found it on Netflix recently. I'm picking up a lot of stuff I missed the first time, especially with the first season. I still consider it the weakest and enjoy it mostly for nostalgia, but I will give it credit where due. The general worldbuilding and showing the effects of war on different people in different places builds early investment and perspective for the viewer. There is some clever foreshadowing (lotus tile) that you don't think much about in the moment. The characters get some really good backstory and development. I forgot how much Zuko was a walking cringe fest early on, but all of it is so important to his arc. Iroh and Sokka are largely comic relief right now, though I'm starting to see them become more than that. I also appreciate how this season is introducing a lot of key allies that come up again later. Their success came from the support of pretty much random people they connected with and who wanted to do the right thing along the journey, not a faceless mass of indoctrinated soldiers. It's a foil to the Fire Nation. Tales of Ba Sing Se is in my top 5. Iroh's story is my favorite. It reveals so much about his character, personal growth, and mission to be there for his nephew through action and short (extremely powerful) dialogue. I liked him before this episode, but it made me love him. Even in its low points I wouldn't say episodes have nothing to offer. I agree that The Great Divide is meh in the scheme of things, but it shows refugees and shows how silly petty, old feuds are in a world rife with much bigger problems. I like the Northern Air Temple for showing that change isn't always a bad thing. I also loved how the father made a bad choice, but had very sympathetic and realistic motivations for sacrificing his moral beliefs. It isn't about good people vs bad people. Generally decent or even good people do bad things or are complicit when faced with extreme pressure and/or devastating loss.

'This sense of inadequacy is what defines his very personality' I disagree, he's shown to be quite capable, a leader, funny and the planner. Really only in single episode does he feel down on the fact he doesn't have bending. The other times he simply states what he would do or show the group what how they could use their bending. This doesn't really align with what you said, he is not defined by his inadequacies. He is a strong character for that, you'd think the writers would bring up his lack of bending WAY more often, but they don't, it's much more subtle. Anyway, just thought that was off, nice video other wise. Aang's journey and commitment to his teachings as a monk will always resonate with me.
