Reasons why films and tv shows struggled to depict Cyclops are that he unfortunately has the same strengths as Professor X and Magneto; not his powers, but his dialogue and the ability to inspire. He also isn’t the wildcard character who media consumers tend to lean towards that Wolverine is. So trying to squeeze him into 25 minute episodes and 2 hour films with those guys is somewhat tough. X-Men 97’s early episodes present a rare opportunity because Xavier isn’t present, which allows Cyclops to have more screen time and development. Now suddenly everyone realizes there’s more to the guy. Guess we’ll see how the plot goes

I still got some issues with occasional awkward expos dumps and the iffy art direction with the heavy/overly-clean line work (those eyelashes, good lord 😂), BUT overall this is still an unbelievable gift to X-Men fans, comic stans or not. And obviously, as far as Cyclops goes, somebody out there was *listening.* And yeah, Storm too! She blew the roof off the end of ep 1! Absolutely awesome. Disney X-Men. What a brave new world. >_>

Not true. Jean has always understood him better. Jean just wasn't for the f*ckery. Emma has ALWAYS had a dark side and let, hell encouraged, Scott to explore his. Jean was so afraid of her own, she never wanted to even experiment with Scott's. "Why take unnecessary risk?" is what she was thinking, not understanding that in order to be a whole person, you must KNOW your whole self, even the dark side. Jean gets that NOW! After Dark Phoenix, death and Ressurrection several times, and ALL the crazy Krakoa stuff(Genesis, Arrakko, Mars, Moira, etc) she knows her own darkness and can now deal with Scott's. Emma is still on her f*ck sh!t. Both Scott and Jean have had growth. They've matured and healed. Emma still needs way more therapy.

Scott Summers is not afraid of a single thing. Let us recall how he was during the Onslaught series. Post (if I'm not mistaken) took him out of the mansion and he was left hanging upside down in just his boxers and he wasn't afraid. He figured out how to get going and do something. He isn't afraid to go toe to toe with villains like Mr. Sinister. He's not afraid of telling Captain America to get off his island. He's not afraid to tell Wolverine to shove it. He isn't afraid of telepaths or a mob of humans. He doesn't standdown from what he believes. He knows what he believes and he fights for it. He says this is what I believe and he goes out and fights. He doesn't stay in the house to dictate where people go. He is the first to go. He is my favorite superhero. To be so sure of yourself and not be afraid of what is to come is something I wish I could be. And I'm not saying he is without doubt or lacks care, it's just that he sees an endpoint of where he wants to be and he focuses so much on getting there that whatever gets in his way most likely will not stand a chance. Well done on the video.

I feel like not only does Cyclops bare a similar role to Captain America but also to another Marvel leader, Reed Richards a.k.a Mr. Fantastic. Both men know that any wrong choice could have massive unintended consequences. It drives them to search and struggle for the right answer to the point where they come off as distant or cold to their loved ones. The difference is that Reed had gained this outlook thanks to one traumatic event as an adult. Scott had to deal with it his entire life thanks to his mutant genetics.

I give a lot of credit to Evolution. Before I got into comics, all I had was the 90’s show, where Cyclops was made to be the stick in the mud. But in Evolution, while he DID think about Jean A LOOOOOT, he was allowed to be more of a character. Wolverine was a mentor figure in the show, so he didn’t have to compete with Cyclops for Jeans affection. Meaning Cyclops didn’t have any pissing contests with Logan to bog down his character. He lead his team well, showed a lot of compassion and caring for his team and even those outside of his team like Rogue (before she joined). He was best friends with Kurt, had friends in school, he was focused but not a stiff. He had a charm to him that the 90’s show never let show. He talked back at wolverine Rarely but wen he did it MATTERED. Then I read comics, and get even more context for why Scott is cool. But I wouldn’t have given him a chance if it weren’t for Evolution.

One thing that stands out reading the comics, specially Claremont but even when Lee was in charge: The sadness buried deep inside him. Every time you see Scott, there's a layer of sadness in everything he does that you don't feel on any other character. Plus he feels like he's never good enough. He's a leader but often don't think he deserves it, but still never crumbles under pressure. He already defeated all the X-men combined multiple times while pulling out the punches. Once to prove his leadership to them, other times to save them from danger. He's not the guy who gets the job done because 'he is professional', I think he does that because is his call and identity. At times, he wants to be selfish and stay away from all the problems but he keeps being pulled back to the heat of the battle where he's meant to lead. His quietness, ever lasting grief mixed with he being an incorrigible romantic must be pointed out as well. (I think one of the coolest romantic moments is Jean/with Phoenix holding his powers so she can look him in the eyes.) His power is the curse he has to live with. He is not Captain America.
@berkekaradag1410
@berkekaradag1410 6 ай бұрын
I am currently started reading Claremont run and this comment is absolutly true. He is not like Captain America. He pretends to be like that. It is just a role that only he fits because he is the original X-Man and the leader. He is responsible for his own team AND whole mutant race. Being the boyscout is just an act. Thats not who he is. Everything about him is just heavy and sad. His past is sad, his power is a curse, what happenned to his wife, child and fellow mutants over the years is just traumatic. And he doesn't even had a life outside of this. He is Charles's own weapon X. His perfect soldier. He is not Captain America.

The "love triangle" triggers me more than anything. It's fucking stupid and never should've ever been a thing. Jean and Logan is bad and has always been bad. It was never even a legitimate triangle either. It was always Scott and Jean with Logan never even coming close to being an option over Scott. Logan was also better off with every other person he has ever been paired off with, whether it be Mariko, Mystique, Ororo, he and Kurt would be incredible too. I have never bought into him and Jean for a second. I think the "rivalry" also works best when used sparingly. They should get along and be friends the majority of the time and squabble ever so often

parkerboy795 The worst part is that the whole “triangle” originated out of a retcon because Claremont was pissy that Marvel had Scott leave Maddy. Claremont creating Maddy was already weird. He created a character who looks exactly like Jean and Scott thought it was Jean reincarnated and Claremont saw nothing weird with them having a relationship and thought they belonged together forever. Then when Marvel had Scott leave Maddy, Claremont decided to retcon in that Jean has always had feelings for Logan and now we’re forced to deal with it to this day. It’s so god damn stupid and annoying. Jean and Logan just are not compatible at all and it should’ve simply stayed at Logan having a crush on Jean, but her never reciprocating those feelings at all and Logan eventually getting over it and moving on. Instead it resulted in Logan constantly being a massive creep about Jean and his creepiness being somewhat justified because even though Scott was always #1 in her heart, she had feelings for Logan.

One of the first X-Men stories I remember, and it's been a while so it's kinda hazy, centered around Bolivar Trask, and his mutant son. It was one of the Sentinel stories, and as the fight goes on, Cyclops comes up with a plan to win, and it has nothing to do with fighting. He figured, that the Sentinels would always adapt to the mutants, learning from them and countering them, so Scott talks to them about the source of mutation. He manages to logic the Sentinels to suicide themselves. In that comic book, Scott Summers outsmarts a group of Super-Computers. After reading that comic, I was hooked. There's Two scenes that always come to Mind whenever I think of Cyclops in relation to his powers, one from the 90's Cartoon, the other from the Evolution Cartoon(Oddly Both Involve the Juggernaut): 1. some Rando gets his Hands on the power of the Juggernaut and decides to go clubbing with his New Buff Body. Logan and Scott Track him down, see him dancing in the club, Scott asks Logan "Wanna do this the Hard way or the easy way?", Logan Right away says "the Easy Way!" and Jumps at the wannabe Juggernaut claws out, and gets Batted aside by an elbow without the big guy even noticing he'd smacked Wolverine aside like a Rag Doll. Scott then Looks at Logan on the Floor and says "not THAT easy Way" and then Blasts the Big Dude to get his attention and Successfully Draws him out of the crowded Club to deal with elsewhere... 2. The real Juggernaut gets out of his Containment facility and makes a B-Line for a Dam overlooking a town. The X-Men all Pile onto the Unstoppable Giant and more or less all get Tossed aside like they're barely Mosquitoes to him. He then Decides to Scream out "you Can't Stop me! I'm Raw POWER!!!", Which Scott takes as a Cue to Challenge that Statement and positions himself in front of Marco and Responds to the Claim with "you want Raw Power? You GOT IT!" and he Takes off his Visor and opens his Eyes right at him... the Unstoppable Juggernaut then STOPS as basically the entire Dam is covered in Bright Red light. Jug eventually Pushes through it, but the fact that Cyclops's Optic Blast actually stopped the Unstoppable, even for a Moment, is an insane feat in and of itself and shows why Scott is so damn scared of his power going off at the wrong time by accident!

Thank goodness Cyclops is getting some shine. Any true X-fan should know how important Cyclops is. I really appreciate your incorporating art and story elements from the Fear Itself tie-in arc. One of my favorite lines from Cyclops is from that arc, wherein when asked why his plans are numbered and not lettered, he responds "'Plan B' implies that we only have 26 plans." The man is a strategic, tactical genius, but another aspect that I think you touched upon but missed the broader stroke of is Cyclops' own feelings of inadequacy and self-loathing - nobody is harder on Scott Summers more than Scott Summers, but I think that while part of that comes from his leadership role, a larger part comes from the meta-text of people complaining about Cyclops being so boring, bad, etc. I feel like more than a few writers have picked-up on that and sort put those thoughts in Scott's ear and that's informed the character for the last decade or so. Regardless, this is a great video and I'm glad that people outside of comic book fans are finally waking up to realize that Cyclops is good, actually - those movies did him no favors...

While I did love Cyclops on the first X-Men film, Apocalypse and DP, I do agree he paled in comparison to his comic (616 and Ultimate) as well as Evolution and Wolverine and the X-Men counterpart (I hated X-Men TAS Cyclops). Cyclops is the grounded one, formed by loss and hides his emotions with the mission. I wish more people realized that or showed it more

Thanks for this. I never read the comics but from watching the movies, I always thought there was more to the character of Cyclops so stumbled on your vid at a 2am reflection moment. He leads this entire team, he has this superpower that he only managed to control thanks to pieces of technology, i want to know his backstory, but we've been denied this in favour of an 'edgelord' Wolverine story. I think it's time we move away from stories about identity (Wolverine and Mystique) and move towards sociological stories which apparently was more prominently present in the comics. I want to learn how Cyclops deals with his leadership, what moral questions torment him in the choices he has to make. I think the world could use some inspiring but realistic stories on leaders right now.

I'm glad you shared your love for Scott. There are so many things about him that Fox's movies couldn't show. Cyclops's leadership is what made the X-Men what they are now. If it wasn't for him, his team and mutants would not have survived thanks to the events of House of M. Messiah Complex, IMO, shows Scott's military prowess and leadership towards the whole event and how he had gone all out in the face of Mutant Extinction. In addition, Nation X also shows how tactical he is when using team members and their abilities that are effective in the battlefield against incoming Predator Xs that are about to invade Utopia. Cyclops has always been my favorite X-Man when I first got to the series via the Animated Series. Him being a leader works because a lot of the members rely on Scott and that responsibility weighs heavy on him and he is responsible for all the actions and decisions he had done only to save his species. He is more than what he is pictured in the cartoons and movies. And though the comics had some ups and downs when it comes to the plot, throughout the years when he first debut in the 60's, he is still the leader of the X-Men and a suffering character that we can somehow relate even if the movies made him dirty by having Wolverine as the center stage (Wolverine and Friends). Another note. Somehow, with all the hate that Cyclops got, it felt like it's a metaphor to how humans hate mutants. A never ending issue in the Marvel Universe.

And then ANAD Marvel killed him off unceremoniously during the time-skip after Secret Wars (2015) after he already been killed off in that event in a much better fashion (better to die getting a few good hits in on an omnipotent Dr. Doom than to die keeling over from being poisoned by Terrigen Mist) before labeling him as a villain worse than Hitler (I wish I was making that up) and generally demonizing the true face of the X-Men until Jonathan Hickman, the writer who killed him off in Secret Wars (2015), came back to save the X-Men.

Totally agree. My favorite for a while now, but it wasn't always that way. He was always presented as the "Captain America" of the X-Men, a total boy scout and teacher's pet. what doesn't receive enough attention is what it means to identify with a character with powers like those of Cyclops those of us who truly relate to him understand what it is to be scared to look at a person not out of fear for our own safety, but for theirs. to be a person of such intensity that you must learn to control yourself in order to protect others from the damage you could do if you didn't
