A fine example of an E-type! However, the 150 mph top speed happened in an "early production" model that was lent to the press. This car had a 3.8 out of one of the La Monze racers that had more power then the stock engine. In addition, they put larger tires under it effectively changing the over-all gearing. The 3.8 had a 500 rpm higher red line then the 4.2 which had the same gearing which is why the 3.8 had a higher top speed

Very good review of a great car. I enjoy driving my '68 OTS E Type & some of the improvements I've made, EDIS/lack of throttle shafts on the firewall have just improved this work of art. Thanks

Your Series 1 1/2 E Type coupe is many people’s favorite model combining the best looking body style with significant mechanical upgrades verses the earlier 3.8 liter cars. Our family owned several over many decades. Each had it’s strengths and weaknesses. The early cars were lighter, the engines sportier. Jaguar never raced a 4.2 at Le Mans. I regularly saw 6000 rpm with my 1963 XKE OTS and never had an engine failure. The engine was stock. This higher rev capability allowed for a higher top speed. The later 4.2 cars had much better brakes, clutch, steering, cooling, and shifting. While I had no trouble executing clean double clutch downshifts into first gear while moving with the hoary old Moss gearbox fitted behind the 3.8, imprecise actuation could chip teeth on that big straight cut first gear. In everyday driving one would generally roll through a stop in second and the big torquey six would pull away easily. The new Jaguar built 4 speed full syncro box had much better syncros and could be shifted faster without grinding. The later cars were considerably better in traffic as a result. The interior was also quieter, road imperfections less noticeable. The V12 cars were quite different: much larger, heavier, and slower on top, at least here in America. The E Type evolved from a sports car to a Grand Tourer. They all have their charms. I was blessed to have been able to own and drive several different Jaguar models including XK 120’s, Mark 7, XX 150, E Types, XJ 6, XJ 12, and more over a period of 5 decades. Every drive was very special. Few automobiles convey that feeling.

Not sure why you are calling this a series 1.5? My '67 is a still considered a series 1 with a 4.2. The series 1.5 was a designation for the '68 model year. The 4.2 was introduced October of '64. The 1.5 was a transition model that was a combination of the series 1 and 2; open headlights, different indicators, rocker switches, spinners missing from the knockoffs and Stromberg carburetors.

A 4.2 liter series 1 E-Type in either OTS or FHC form is the ultimate sports car. My 370Z sport coupe with manual transmission is the closest I'll ever get to owning a masterpiece like this car.

Purrfect? Oh please, the car is extremely unbalanced, too narrow and the back is poor. It is far from perfect...

Its interesting that the porshe of this period had a better aerodynamic coeficiant than the e type The etype was actually a mid 1950s car and not really a 60s car

Super bummed to learn that Mithril is permanently closed. Guess I won’t get a shot at driving an E type any time soon. =(

A true Jaguar E Type. Right hand drive. Export cars were not shown at the Motor Show launch. Picky ? Yes just a bit :)

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station fuel pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. :-(((////

Beautiful beyond words but having owned two of them...a '62 Coupe and a '66 Roadster, I have to say honestly I'd NEVER want to own another one. They are a nightmare waiting to become a horror movie. If you have to own an XK-E, build a glass case and drive the car into it and seal it up. Look at it but don't, I repeat, don't drive it or your nightmare will begin.

It's everything a schoolboy would want in a car. But... stupid long bonnet, bad aerodynamics (despite what people often think) uncomfortable seating position, almost no practical use, rust traps galore & even that quote from Enzo was as much about his own self promotion than the Etypes looks, by saying it he got his name mentioned in every single road test or article written about the Etype didn't he. I think the etype looks great but I also love the look of some commercial vehicles, the Etype is a pretty toy.

I'd take a 4.2 XKE roadster or coupe in a second over any car which in the long run will be worth a fortune.
