The Series 3 has often been regarded as the least desirable E-Type, but the chaps at E-Type UK have turned this one into a modern masterpiece.

"dreadful" is quite a strong word to describe an E-type. In original condition they are quite a leap forward compared to anything contemporary... I have a series 1 with original brakes and I know their limitations, I would argue that they are not big enough yes, they heat up too fast, but they provide decent stopping power. It an E-type is dreadful, I would like Alex to describe a Morris Marina! 😂

A lot of it would require them to look into superior material choices for things like pillars and support structures to return them to a more reasonable size. Unfortunately, carbotanium composites filled with aluminum honeycomb is expensive, so nobody really wants to bother with it for pillars and such. Cars from the past that don't have to meet modern safety regulations can get away with those impractically beautiful canopies and bodies. Modern cars cannot.

The Series 3 E-Type V12 is truly beautiful, the straight six on the other hand looks unbalanced and anorexic. I did my apprenticeship with Jaguar in the early 80s and was fortunate to drive several E-Types ... they were unstable at 'high' speeds - speeds which even a entry-level VW Polo will comfortably do these days - suffered from overheating inboard brakes (this problem even carried forward on the XJS) etc.

I'm a fan of restomods like this. Why not have the best of both worlds? I believe that every classic or high performance car should have a completely stock version somewhere in the world (perhaps in a museum) for historical value, but every other model should be allowed to be altered in whichever way the owner desires. That is the point of a personally owned car. It is meant to serve you not the other way around.

I don't understand why this has to be expensive to do. Why don't they take old, normal every-day, pretty cars and remake them using new tech? I'm 100% sure there will be enough demand to make it affordable and profitable. For example if Mercedes decided to re-make 100 or 500 or say 50,000 units of the 1965 230SL, many people would buy them, especially if they were electric. Actually I'd buy one even if it was 110% more expensive than a modern Golf GTI.

Is this a paid commercial from E-Type UK? It all sounds perfect but if you talk to the owner of this beauty You will hear a complete different story about what this company delivered. Just one simple item that the testdriver never mentioned, it had a very rough idle ..... we found that those nice 12 stacks (intake) where never synchronized properly (this takes 30 minutes to do). After that being done it idled beautifully. Or ask the owner about an overheating problem. The car was back at E-Type UK several times over a 6 month period without it being fixed ..... all it really was was the Voltage regulator was bad and the whole nightmare took 18£ to fix. Yes it is beautiful but the list of unresolved items was long and required expensive „afterwork“ before the owner can hit the south of france with it.

Bernhard List . Good update. Thanks. Not surprising. I presume that if the owner could afford this update then he could afford a measly extra 18k. This is one of those “if I won the lottery” cars.
@bernhardlist9359
@bernhardlist9359 5 жыл бұрын
Upps, no no no not 18k as in 18000, it was 18 pounds for just a voltage regulator that was dead. This was not a matter of being able to afford it but the hassle of a „newly built“ car supposedly overheating. Trust me, it is an aweful feeling when that tempgauge climbs and you have no place to stop on a highway. It all started because I am probably the only person that does not believe that all E-Types overheat. Jaguar did not build and sell a car to California and Arizona knowing it easily overheats but this believe has manifested itself in this community. Since fixed, this car does run a perfect temperature even in traffic jams. All we did was, check the engine with a thermal (infrared) camera to see that is was at a perfect 86 degrees and at the same time noticed that the fuel tank content (indication) did not decrease during driving. Only these two instruments (water temp and fuel tank) need a stable 10Volts to function. In my humble opinion, a shop prideing themself of being an E-Type specialist should have done this during the first return but was unable to find this simple problem during a 6 month period. The actual list of problems was much longer and E-Type UK did, instead of fixing them, just blamed everybody else for there shortcomings. Build your own opinion. Hope this explains my point. Greetings

I've have owned a 1963 Series One Roadster for just over 22 years and while it has only just over 43,000 miles on it, its time for a little restoration. Would love to have air on it and a better gearbox, but don't know if I could actually upgrade it.

I’d love all these mods on a Series 1. Including that V12, which I hear can be bored & stroked to beyond 7 litres. Now THAT is an E Type I want to see. A beautiful and positively silly creation.

MLP-Hot-Rod Lister used to bore the same V12 out to 7litres on some of their Xjs upgrades, so easily possible on e_type.. I know of one owned by a directors estate that's for sale @£80k.. Puts out approx 565hp with 5spd man box.. I had a 6litre lister manual a few years ago that was dynoed at 427hp at the wheels. Only issue was the gallons per mile consumption!

I have the privilege of knowing the owner of 77RW which was the second E Type ever made. It was used as a car to test various components on during development. It was driven overnight to the Geneva motor show to cope with the demand for test drives to potential customers. It is in prestine and original condition but trust me. Having been out in that car you would not want to use it on today's roads. It spends most of its time in a small workshop not far from me. It's always a pleasure to see it but I do wonder if it were brought up to today's standards just how good it could actually be. The biggest let down is the brakes and suspension. The steering isn't that great either. In its day it must have been superb. But time and tide wait for no man and indeed no car. I would love to see these cars come back into production again as they are a sight to behold and with today's manufacturing techniques and engineering they could even become available to the masses at a reasonable price. Just a thought...

My Grandfather owned the only fuel injected S3 V12 roadster built by the factory..Lucas system..hard-soft top..two sets of wheels..body mounted clips for his fly rods.....he employed a retired engineer to fettle it for him,,,he bought all his Jags straight out of the factory..the car is still in Scotland

Thanks for sharing Dave. My father, then myself owned a 1963 XKE OTS for 44 years. Driving and racing it in the late 1960’s was the high point of my car life. Compared to its contemporaries, it was in a league of its own. No American car would go 150 mph stock until the Corvette got the big block. The jag 4 wheel Dunlop disc brakes were not as strong as one would like, but they handled high speeds and repeated stops better than everybody else’s drum brakes. Only my 356 Porsches had better brakes. The independent suspension was better on less than perfect roads than the solid axle competition. There was less wheelspin, too. I thought that the clutch was fairly weak and prone to judder unless driven carefully. The American clutches were much better. The Moss gearbox was an acquired taste. Dating back to the XK 120, the slow deliberate shift, weak syncros, and non syncro first gear required a perceptive and skilled driver to master. Power steering would have really helped in low speed maneuvers, especially with the then new radial tires that were commonly retrofit. Radial tires increased the already weighty steering effort. At the time of its introduction, there really was nothing like the E type. And even today the design still creates visual excitement even to people who are not concerned with automobiles. Of course a new Honda works better in almost every way. But such is progress.

17" seems to me to be about the largest wheel size for looks durability and practicality. 16" the tyre still rolls around, 18" and above you're forever dodging potholes so you don't ding the rims and they don't seem to look right either. 17s seem to be the sweet spot.

Since a kid (am 50Yrs old now) I've always loved the E-Type.. But then in 2015 when Clarkson showed off the Eagle E-Type on TopGear, I fell in love all over again. It was a similar feeling with the DB5, and years later (I think on TG again), they showed of a car that was a 'Ground up restomod' of the DB5, looking exactly the same, rebuilt and tuned engine, but, with modern brakes, suspension and other bits to bring it more up to date (similar to what Singer do to the Porsche 011's)... Man that thing was also a beaut!!! 🤔😍😍 😎🇬🇧
