This is what car makers should do. Keep the old style but also put modern stuff in it
@marcd73326 жыл бұрын
Have you heard of regulations?
@mndlessdrwer6 жыл бұрын
A lot of it would require them to look into superior material choices for things like pillars and support structures to return them to a more reasonable size. Unfortunately, carbotanium composites filled with aluminum honeycomb is expensive, so nobody really wants to bother with it for pillars and such. Cars from the past that don't have to meet modern safety regulations can get away with those impractically beautiful canopies and bodies. Modern cars cannot.

By far, the best restomod of a Jaguar XKE I’ve seen. My own personal take on what was shown would be dual exhaust pipes at each back corners of car, matching wooden handle of the e-brake to the wooden steering, up and down option of the steering wheel to driver’s preference. Again, my own preference, but man, what a beautifully done car.
@davefrance37216 жыл бұрын
I have the privilege of knowing the owner of 77RW which was the second E Type ever made. It was used as a car to test various components on during development. It was driven overnight to the Geneva motor show to cope with the demand for test drives to potential customers. It is in prestine and original condition but trust me. Having been out in that car you would not want to use it on today's roads. It spends most of its time in a small workshop not far from me. It's always a pleasure to see it but I do wonder if it were brought up to today's standards just how good it could actually be. The biggest let down is the brakes and suspension. The steering isn't that great either. In its day it must have been superb. But time and tide wait for no man and indeed no car. I would love to see these cars come back into production again as they are a sight to behold and with today's manufacturing techniques and engineering they could even become available to the masses at a reasonable price. Just a thought...

@garthlundquist83165 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing Dave. My father, then myself owned a 1963 XKE OTS for 44 years. Driving and racing it in the late 1960’s was the high point of my car life. Compared to its contemporaries, it was in a league of its own. No American car would go 150 mph stock until the Corvette got the big block. The jag 4 wheel Dunlop disc brakes were not as strong as one would like, but they handled high speeds and repeated stops better than everybody else’s drum brakes. Only my 356 Porsches had better brakes. The independent suspension was better on less than perfect roads than the solid axle competition. There was less wheelspin, too. I thought that the clutch was fairly weak and prone to judder unless driven carefully. The American clutches were much better. The Moss gearbox was an acquired taste. Dating back to the XK 120, the slow deliberate shift, weak syncros, and non syncro first gear required a perceptive and skilled driver to master. Power steering would have really helped in low speed maneuvers, especially with the then new radial tires that were commonly retrofit. Radial tires increased the already weighty steering effort. At the time of its introduction, there really was nothing like the E type. And even today the design still creates visual excitement even to people who are not concerned with automobiles. Of course a new Honda works better in almost every way. But such is progress.
